eBay Mimics Amazon Buy Box with Test of Top Pick Page

eBay's process of Amazonification may be nearly complete as it tests its own version of the Buy Box. 

UK merchant Bamford Trading blogged about the new page they spotted and noted how eBay picked a single seller's listing to display to shoppers on a product page complete with product reviews.

"If this isn't a direct imitation of the Amazon Buy Box then it's a good copy," they blogged.

eBay CEO Devin Wenig had warned Wall Street analysts last week that it had begun testing search results pages. But the page came as a shock to sellers who had no warning from eBay. In fact, few sellers seem aware of the page - during testing, it's a bit behind the scenes.

On its eBayExpert.co.uk blog, Bamford Trading discussed the new page and its implications for sellers like themselves.

"What does this mean for you as a seller? Well of course the aim is to win the Buy Box. How? We don't know given some sellers are featured/rotated with poor feedback and higher prices."

Here's a link to one such page, though it may disappear in time. Note that on eBay.com, the Top Pick pages do have a Buy It Now button, unlike the pages displaying on eBay UK.

All of these changes are aimed at new merchandise. And they hurt a buyer of antiques and vintage collectibles, making it much more difficult to find items using search. Years ago I argued that eBay should be split into two platforms, new merchandise, and used & vintage/antique. I hope someone buys eBay and splits off the used & vintage/antique side of eBay. They are really not compatible.

Yup they beta tested a few of my listings with this. Since i sell very rare highly specialized items, the title and the picture isn't enough for buyers to make an educated buying decision. I called them up and told them about it and they reverted it back to normal in a few hours. Also let them know the details button was not prominent enough.

The last time a truly original thought crossed an eBay executive's mind, they were lost in a library.... a book fell off a shelf, and struck them in the head.

So much for CEO Wenig's statement- " ....we do not want to be Amazon...."

Clearly, eBay is incapable of genuine innovation that does not harm their sellers or alienate buyers from their marketplace.

1999 was a terrible year on eBay!

Anyone could leave anyone else a NEGATIVE and you didn't even have to buy anything from them. . .

Your buying and selling feedback were open books for everyone to see.

If you didn't like someone you could follow them around and bid items up that they were bidding on.

You could contact everyone who was bidding on item.

eBay was a complete mess back in 1999!

The GOLDEN years were from 2001-2008

We don't need another Amazon.  Can you image the eBay drones? Made poorly overseas and hacked/re-routed by scammer country of the month.    

Ebay had a good product.  They lost sight of it.

Not an original idea in years.

I remember when pinterest came on the scene. eBay wasted no time stealing some of their ideas.

innovation is as foreign to eBay as two buck chuck is to Chateau Margaux.

Ebays been devoid of original ideas for the last decade.

I said it before and it ears repeating - theft from your sellers ISNT a business plan, but it seems it's all they have.

Who are the morons they continue to hire?? They aren't contributing ANYTHING...... Shame on eBay ... But if they will steal from sellers then they will steal from Amazon too.

I believe that if only one item is shown then folks will just leave and go elsewhere to shop. That is what I would do. How can I compare prices and various other details that I might want to know. I don't believe in product reviews. Have you ever read some of them. You can get an ear full about bad shipping time and not a word about the item, etc. As manufacturers anything they have to state is advertising pure and simple.

Missing the point.  They're aimed at BULK merchandise; new is just a side effect of that.  I sell mostly new stuff and none of this helps me because I don't order hundreds of cases.

Second that- Yeah ebay was best from 2001 to 2008. There were all sorts of interesting things on there during that time, especially around 2005 or so. Now it's like a mall with most of the specialty stores totally gone. Sad.

For me the good times went til abut 2011ish.

This is horrible for collectibles, pages like this make it all about price and when people are buying a collectible lowest price is not the only thing that they are looking at.

So eBay mimics Amazon but then Wenig states he wants to make eBay unique and special. At the eBay OPEN this week in LV:

In talking about what made eBay special, he said, "Uniqueness does not necessarily mean a rare teapot of which there is one in the world. Uniqueness might mean last year's iPhone, new."

Ebay has their own Webster's dictionary.
