eBay Provides Update on Tech Issues

By: Ina Steiner

We've noticed some serious technical issues on eBay on Ecommerce EKG and on the eBay Technical Issues board recently, and eBay issued an update in an unusual way today.

During today's weekly chat session hosted by Jim "Griff" Griffith, he posted issues that had been reported and indicated which ones had been fixed.

Fixed:
- The Shipping Amount Not Showing In Sent Invoices issue has been fixed (resolved).

- The Missing Item Title in Billing Invoices issue is reported as fixed (resolved).

- The Random Thumbnail Images Not Appearing In Search or Categories has been fixed (resolved).

Reports Received/Tickets Opened:
- The Incorrectly Showing Free Shipping In Accepted Offers in Mobile issue has been reported. No Updates.

- USPS International Tracking numbers (starting with an "L") are not displaying all tracking information. USPS has alerted eBay that they are working on the issue and will provide updates.

The two issues that have been acknowledged but not fixed are serious - let's hope eBay (and the USPS) will get those issues fixed soon - Griffith said he would post any updates he receives in the next week in the same post.

While it would make sense to acknowledge them on the Systems Announcement board and in the Tech Issues forum, what a welcome change to know which issues eBay is aware of and working on!

I have another one for them to work on.

I bid on an auction showing one shipping amount.  When I won the auction and went to pay, the shipping amount was significantly higher.

Re-checked and it appears the seller only had one shipping choice. It would go back to the lower amount but then toggle to the higher amount at payment screen.

Sooo....

It will be nice if eBay one day realizes the importance of having a form where a seller or a buyer can report a technical issue, perhaps from a dropdown list, but of course, their useless, outsourced dev team loves to have issues all the time to have an excuse to exist in bigger number than what is actually needed. They should hire Amazon tech team.

I am still waiting for eBay to fix up the photos in sellers favourite items. I have had no photos show since October 2013. Finally in January 2016 I had some photos show up but I cannot put what I want to show as it keeps telling me I have no items for sale. I am sick of the reply " we have handed this to our technical team who are working on the problem". For gods sake I could be out of business or dead by the speed at they are continually working on fixing this problem.

Basset.  I'm sure it is now TOO LATE to fix that particular purchase, but... did it occur to you to message the SELLER to request a CUSTOM INVOICE that did show the correct shipping cost as indicated in their auction AD / LISTING ?  I promise you that until the past few months when I came to realize that the BUYER can ALWAYS send such a request I would not have THOUGHT to make such a request.  It is actually a VERY GOOD way to get around any ODD $ $$ $$$ mistakes that eBay's GENERALLY ACCURATE freight calculator program might make. NONE of my listings are set to "Immediate Payment Required" so if I can REACH the buyer in time I can FIX FIRST so they pay an appropriate price and ... EVEN BETTER when the buyer buys and PAYS for ONE item AFTER I've already taken all of THAT day's packages to the post office I can Message that buyer encouraging them that THEY can still use BUY NOW on as many MORE items as they wish, but NOT PAY WHEN EBAY SHOWS ANY INVOICE ... and then message me requesting a CUSTOM INVOICE.  What that *rarely* does happen I can then send that SECOND invoicefor any other item(s) nad once they pay for the custom invoice I then PACK all the items in ONE package and LINK the same tracking number for those add-on items to the first one that they "too quickly" paid.  Interesting and useful "Life Hack" to tuck away in the back on one's mind for future use.

The missing gallery pictures issue is NOT fixed no matter what they reported. I have an item that the gallery picture goes missing on. I change the photos so the new one shows. It's fine for a few weeks and it goes missing again. I reported it so many times I must have my own desk at ebay to hold the reports.   It's still missing today 3-31-16

That is a good lifehack to know angryllama. Sad that buyers and sellers have to be so creative to just complete a transaction.

Just recently encountered problems in making a multiple purchase from a seller - Seller would change the invoice and then eBay would un-change it.  Seller finally ended up changing the PRICE instead of the shipping and sending me an offer on the second item.

On my recent purchase mentioned earlier, where the shipping cost when UP - the seller got involved and calculated it to be the original lower amount. We completed the transaction but it involved a partial refund.

Sellers worry they look bad when shipping increases at checkout.  If I had been a novice buyer I may have blamed the seller - and cancelled the deal instead of being reasonably sure the problem lay with eBay.

eBay checkout issues - like playing a game that keeps sending buyer back to ''start''.

I agree with Beth. The missing gallery pictures do NOT appear to be fixed. while surfing this morning, I was still seeing MANY, MANY listings with missing gallery pics.

@thehosst

If it were visible, it would be like the Firefox bug tracker.  Reports would be ignored for years and then marked "wontfix" because it's time to rearrange the UI again.

What Bassett said, same thing happened to me.  One shipping choice showing in listing but a different amount when checking out.

"Shipping Amount Not Showing In Sent Invoices"

"Missing Item Title in Billing Invoices"

eBay has been around more than twenty years now.  The fact that these issues occurred at ALL demonstrates what a disorganized mess their IT department is.

Their "code base" has clearly become unmaintainable, meaning they're unable to implement new features without breaking existing ones.  And their testing regimen is clearly "inadequate", to put it mildly.
