Be On Your Guard against Shipping Delays
By: Ina Steiner
Holiday shipping volumes have "blown past" expectations, according to the Wall Street Journal
, which said UPS and FedEx are "straining" to keep up. For online merchants, it means watching carefully for any backlogs reported by carriers and considering using expedited shipping should things start to look uncertain.
The Journal cited data from ShipMatrix that said on-time deliver rates for UPS ground, adjusted for weather and other unavoidable delays, fell to 96.3% last week, while FedEx Ground's hit 96.9%.
There was no mention of USPS, which has said its peak delivery week is next week. (Its peak mailing/shipping da is expected to be December 19th, its peak delivery day, December 22nd.)
The Journal also quoted logistics consultancy Transportation Impact LLC, which warned UPS could be bracing for a bumpy holiday season.

Bad weather and natural disasters are also worth watching when mulling which service to use and how late to accept holiday orders.
