Be On Your Guard against Shipping Delays

Holiday shipping volumes have "blown past" expectations, according to the Wall Street Journal, which said UPS and FedEx are "straining" to keep up. For online merchants, it means watching carefully for any backlogs reported by carriers and considering using expedited shipping should things start to look uncertain.

The Journal cited data from ShipMatrix that said on-time deliver rates for UPS ground, adjusted for weather and other unavoidable delays, fell to 96.3% last week, while FedEx Ground's hit 96.9%.

There was no mention of USPS, which has said its peak delivery week is next week. (Its peak mailing/shipping da is expected to be December 19th, its peak delivery day, December 22nd.)

The Journal also quoted logistics consultancy Transportation Impact LLC, which warned UPS could be bracing for a bumpy holiday season.

Here are links to carriers' posted holiday shipping deadlines:

Bad weather and natural disasters are also worth watching when mulling which service to use and how late to accept holiday orders.

Don't know where all the sales are coming from that are driving these high shipping numbers, but it sure isn't ebafia.

Low sales + a couple of low DSRs = metrics disaster.

Surprisingly, other than the week after Thanksgiving, delays aren't that bad. The rest of the year, most packages via USPS took 2-3 days, this December are taking mostly 3-4 days. Nothing really got lost for a week or so either. I even shipped a UPS package on Friday in Wisconsin and was delivered in Georgia on Monday... and that was ground shipment.

I don't mind USPS or UPS taking a day longer. What I mind is when the shipper takes 4-5 days to ship out then blames the carrier.

People need to "get over it"... ifr your kid's gift "gets there" AFTER Chanukah or Christmas, he/she doesn't need therapy... he/she needs a grownup to show them images of war torn countries where there are no "gifts"... only bombs & death.

I got a question from a potential buyer this morning asking if a particular item would arrive by Christmas. Unfortunately, the person didn't provide me with a state name or a ZIP Code, so I had to explain as best I could about USPS' cut-offs for mailing and the potential for on-time delivery.

Don't blame this small seller for over loading USPS.

Eight straight days in December without a single eBay sale.

Guess this last weekend before Christmas will be BIG!  Really eBay BIG!
