What Do You Think of eBay's New Holiday TV Ad?

By: Ina Steiner

eBay unveiled its new holiday campaign this morning and linked to one of the TV spots it will run, which you can view on YouTube.

"The Gift They're Waiting For Is Waiting on eBay" is the theme of the campaign, and the television spots will debut on November 9. eBay said it marks its first holiday national television ads in nearly two years.

eBay's Chief Marketing Officer (North America) Suzy Deering said:

"Our new campaign illustrates why eBay is a top destination for holiday shopping - delivering incredible inventory and inspiration, along with a seamless shopping experience. As a global marketplace, eBay is the only place to find this year's most in-demand items, from small and mid-size sellers to top brands like Mattel, to one-of-a-kind personal or bespoke items. We empower shoppers to be the ultimate gift-givers with our unparalleled selection."

On the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, eBay will host a collection of deals exclusively created for mobile shoppers using the eBay app.

eBay will also introduce a countdown clock on the Holiday homepage to enable shoppers to track when new deals will be released.

Let us know what you think of the new ad and the campaign theme.

Really impressed with the ad, so much better than the last couple they've released. I guess they took some of Wenig's bonus money and hired a decent advertising agency.

Still looks like a second grade class put it together. It would kill ebay to actually hire someone that knows what they are doing.

Nice but not memorable. I already don't remember it and I just watched it. No Weird Al catchy upbeat tunes :( Still love that one. Don't we all?!

"The Gift for the One"

Should be renamed the "the defect for the seller"

What kind of GIFT did the Wenig clan give YOU this xmas dealer sellers?

On the first day of eBayxmas my Wenig gave to me:

1) defect for late shipping
2) fake VERO charges
3) total lack of seller protection
4) protection of bad buyers
5) refusal to remove fakes and knockoffs
6) constant unneeded changes to community boards
7) another year of worthless Griff
8) another round of undeserved negatives
9) None English speaking Filipino Cs agents (no job seekers left in the USA?)
10) shady Chinese shipping deals
11) undeserved SNADs
12) crooked Paypal dealings

and 1 golden parachute!

didnt see it on TV, saw it on Youtube - kinda lame but better then nothing. Oh 'cept when your listings are hidden (like som eof mine are) well they arent hidden they are just shoved to page 2 even though I have best price and have %100 feedback ....

Wenig's getting coal from Santa - eBay hasnt improved at all this year.

I LIKE it!!!  I do however agree with bitbybit, a more memorable tune should have been used.  The type that when you hear it start to play, you immediately think of Ebay.

@pace

I respect you so much, but the commercial was not meant to fix all the ills that Ebay has done or is doing to its members.  They could never meet your expectations so you will always be disappointed.

Now here eBay had a chance ... a chance in a lifetime  to really boost Chrsitmas interest to their site and ...they blew it.

''The'' hottest toy under the Christmas tree to be opened in the Hatchimal, interactive pet hatching egg from Spinmaster. It is sold out everywhere - except from 3rd party sellers on Amazon who have listed this $59.99 toy at $185+ and on eBay with small sellers selling at more reasonable/fair prices of $100 to 135.  EBay is showing over 1,000 active listings.

eBay has this toy trending as one of their most popular toys this season yet has this little girl gasping in awe over a ...Barbie doll.

When Walmart, Target and Toys R Us (the company has their Chinese factory working around the clock) restock later this month - Target shoppers will be limited to 1 toy a customer...and trust me that toy will be on eBay in a New York minute as  Amazon has restricted this item.

Again, a chance in a lifetime to really drive buyers to eBay with a great ad and they come up with ... Barbie.

Let's see what Amazon's Christmas TV ads are this year ...

@ marie :)

"It’s one small step for sellers, one giant leap for buyer (kind).

One marginally positive advert will not solve any of eBays issues and yes due to the theftacular way they do business - I will always be disappointing.

(Im NOT however disappointed in your posts :) )

My point was however ... that for the $5 million or so it may have cost them, they could do better and spend %50 LESS then that and just stop the bad behavior - and get farther along then with that ad.

But as always, eBay chooses to do the WRONG thing. "eBay never misses an opportunity to miss an opportunity".

Imagine take just $1 million of that and use it as a fund to make sellers who are defrauded by their policies "whole" again - imagine what that good will would generate!

Take another $2 million and hire a bunch of US based INFORMED CS agents - ones who have REAL power to fix issues!

Take another $1 million and use it to buy extended warranties for items that may require it and use it as a tool to solve buyer problems. Fully 1/2 to 2/3 of buyers SNAD issues occur when a buyer with in the 30 day return period, ends up with a defective item. Not a DOA but one that just konks out. The buyer then goes to the maker and asks about a warranty. Want to know what %95 of the manufacturers say? They say "you bought it on eBay - no warranty!". The buyer then goes back to the seller and opens a SNAD case. BUT, if he/she had a 3rd party warranty and could just mail it in for exchange or replacement ..... eBay would be paradise!

Ive been in the trenches for MANY years (since 84) - i KNOW this business "cold". I have common sense solutions - eBay brass just prefers to waste time and money on stupid things ... like tv commercials, when theres better things they could do with that cash.

Yes its better then nothing - but thats NOT saying much ....

Volvo351 says "OK, Where TF have the ads been all freakin' YEAR?"

This one is easy Volvo351. They've been plastered all over eBay, taking potential buyers off site to buy elsewhere.  LOL

Boy, with the election results will anyone be buying for Christmas?

I viewed the ad commercial and was pleased with what I saw.

However, one great ad will not do it, there needs to be many many many ads on TV and in print.

Let's hope that eBay will spend the money not spent on advertising for first 10 months of the year and start spending it on the two most important final months.

Two days after the election, is it safe to come out from under the bed?
