Will Christmas on a Sunday Impact Online Shopping?

By: Ina Steiner

Because Christmas falls on a Sunday this year, December 26th will be a Federal holiday, and it's likely that many people will have the day off from work. Will that impact online sellers in any way?

Shopping doesn't stop on Christmas Day for several reasons - people look for items they didn't receive as gifts; they look for post-holiday bargains; and they set out to use the gift cards they received. Mondays tend to be strong online-shopping days during the holidays - all good signs that December 26th could be a strong shopping day.

However, it's possible people will bargain-hunt in retail stores on Monday instead of online.

Another issue for online sellers: because Dec. 26th is a federal holiday, there will be no mail pickup or delivery and the post offices will be closed. That means two days in a row of no mail delivery.

Do you think the fact that Christmas falls on a Sunday will have an impact on shopping behavior?

And how does this year's Christmas schedule affect you as an online seller?

Should be a BETTER year, then. Christmas on a MONDAY means no mail delivery on Christmas Eve! People having the 26th off gives them all day to surf the 'net.

I don't know about shopping but Christmas Sundays (and Mondays as well) typically have ramifications for shipping.

Buyer waits until Friday to buy and then expects Saturday delivery whether it's available or not.

I agree that lots of people should be shopping online on the 26th. After a day of eating and opening presents, how many want to battle malls and Big Box stores and people doing returns? Much less stressful to just sit in front of your computer and search for something you really want.

Typically the 26th is the "Opening Day for The Season of Returns" both physically and for online shoppers as well.

In 2005 I had a great Christmas selling season. In 2011 better than the 3 years before that.  So I'm optimistic.

Of course only rarely do the vintage, antique, things I sell get bought for gifts and typically they aren't returned so I can afford to be optimistic.
(i'm on both ebay and amazon and I'm still optimistic)

Um volvo351?  Christmas Day is Sunday this year, not Monday.  So there will be postal delivery on Christmas Eve, which is Saturday.

All it means is there will be a banking, postal, and for some people working holiday on Monday. Provided everything stays normal, without a doubt, people can go out and shop on Monday for the after Christmas bargains to their heart's content. It should be a very profitable day across the board for most merchants both B&M and online.

@27tcle
December 26 Monday is the observed holiday. Banks and the post office will be closed.
