eBay Launches New TV Ad Campaign

By: Ina Steiner

eBay launched a new ad campaign, and "They are really good," according to an EcommerceBytes reader. They're the first series of television ads to get a positive response from sellers in a long time.

AdWeek also gave them a thumb's up, writing, "The "Shop a Song" spots, directed by Robert Bisi of Brand New School, are built around the soundtracks. As each song plays, products pop up that match the lyrics in some way - either literally or figuratively (which is sometimes more fun). This results in mini music videos that are impeccably designed, and great fun to watch."

Sellers reacting on the eBay boards also liked the ads. "Wow.....," wrote one user - "they actually featured real stuff and not cheap electronics and cell phones!" And they hoped that eBay would run the ad on TV, not just online.

Take a look at the ads embedded in the AdWeek article and let us know what you think!

If those ''1-800-Meet-Girls'' services and those ''magic-weight-loss'' companies can afford to buy late-night ads on lower-tier cable networks, then surely eBay can afford to have *some* sort of television presence as well.

I think these are pretty positive and fun commercials. Would be nice to have some eBay advertising again. I really think eBay needs it. They have suffered from lack of advertising.

Good Job.

Said this under another topic but I think those videos were well done - especially Riptide with the howling wolves part - it calls for a responding aaarrrooo!

Remember the 3-wolf-moon Amazon review way back when it was all fun & profit? Even eBay got sales off that.

Advertising (and marketing of any type) is, of course, always helpful. It is especially effective after longstanding and systemic problems with a business have been addressed and remedied. In this case, some important steps & prerequisites seem to have been overlooked.

The many crushing & chronic problems that are torpedoing eBay & many of its remaining good small sellers (the genuine heart & soul of the entire operation) need to be comprehensively addressed (& not by an insane survey from La La Land).

Why have a marketing campaign without first providing emergency care (followed by intensive rehab. for a fast recovery) to the failing patient (the venue that is not just a venue)?  Why skip triage and bring newbies (buyers/sellers/customers) in to discover a lumbering and non-functioning site fraught with glitches, manipulations & mind numbing hourly & daily challenges & disasters?

Perhaps a ''team'' at eBay can finally get around to reading, considering & incorporating all the excellent free advice offered on this site (& others) by VERY experienced and seasoned ecommerce experts.  Of course, we all know that the actual track record of words & deeds shows that will (tragically) never happen.

Unfortunately the army of ''veterans'' with the actual & pertinent experience, expertise, & education (both ''on the job'' & in the halls of academia) will continue to be ignored. They are, sadly, just the ''noise'' standing in the way of monetization.  When the primary goal, sadly, continues to be unjust enrichment, those who seek to loot an enterprise are not truly concerned about reinventing & reinvigorating it.  It will never be what it once was, but it certainly had the potential to be reinvented, transformed and set on a new course -- after getting massive help in an ''ecommerce intensive care unit''.

Getting new shoppers to a site is great.  But what happens when (1) there is no functioning & legitimate search process, (2) there are glitches in the bidding/BIN buying/paying process, (3) there is no consistently functioning message/communication system, (4) there is no true customer service department, (5) etc., etc., etc. ........  ?

As many have noticed (by doing test searches of both their own items & stores as well as those of other sellers) there is now virtually no ''search'' function on eBay. More items and more stores are becoming almost 100% invisible almost 100% of the time.  You can look at the feedback charts for many sellers & use that as evidence of the almost complete cessation of business (over the past year) for many small sellers.

Sadly, legions of sellers around the world are still paying store rents and listing fees for the right to be hidden in the eBay black hole. No one ever agreed to pays fees in order to ''make believe'' that they were running a business on the supposed global venue.

Some (altho' those numbers are plummeting) keep desperately hoping that a rescue & recovery team with brains, experience, business acumen, ethics, vision & common sense will magically appear.

Perhaps the peppy ads can just distract us from the demoralizing fact that the sad reality of terminal dysfunction & convolution ..... is probably a permanent condition.

I'd like to know what the "eBay 4.0" at the end of the videos is referring to. Perhaps Wenig, who is the fourth person to be CEO of the company?

And I agree with Annie. Certainly eBay can afford some TV spots on the lesser cable channels. Heck, if Progressive and GEICO can run almost non-stop ads, eBay should be able to pay for one or two a day.

But "serioussellers" also brings up excellent points. There's not much use running the ads to attract new buyers if said buyers are going to be disappointed and frustrated with the glitches and other issues that we've all discussed.

Always being Mr Negative .... Id have been more impressed with Wenig & JD having a money fight - throwing packs of hundreds at each other ... then burning them in a bon fire.

Why? cause thats how I feel eBay treats its sellers and how much it values hard work.

Nice commercials I guess, wouldnt make me want to buy anything cause of them, but maybe the 20 something generation finds this kind of presentation(s) interesting and "purchase worthy".

eBay 4.0 .... ? Fourth reinvention of the same wheel? 4th CEO who has no ecommerce background? 4 years in JAIL for fraud .... who knows.

What I do know is that ad agency wont be getting/have to deal with a 180 day INR issue - and thats just not fair.

I like the ads, I think they are well done.  Now, let's hope ebay figures out how to run with them!

Amen, Annie!  I have often wondered why, if their advertising budget is so tight (oh, please!) they don't, at least, run those late night infomercials.  Just SOMETHING to get their name and our merchandise out there.

I think that the "4.0" that some of you have mentioned might be referring to the new eBay app, that supposedly is a complete and utter flop, according to reviews all over the internet.  What thinks anyone else?

@serioussellers

Agreed.  Advertising a broken platform is a waste of money.

eBay is NOT broken!

It's been working for me for over 15 years.

Better now then last year or the year before.

Not broken?  Yeah, no.

I was looking to list my Botcon 2010 box set not five minutes ago.  One of the figures in that set is named Streetstar or Street Star (depends on the source).  Putting in Street Star returned fewer listings than Streetstar.  No quotes either so don't pull that excuse out your your toolbag.  On what planet is that not broken?

You might want to temper that enthusiasm until someone other than eBay sellers are seeing the ads. These ads need to translate into an actual uptick in buying on the site. You, who sells obscure tools, don't need to worry about advertising, but for other sellers, who have a substantial number of competitors, attracting new customers is a serious issue.

Haven't seen the ads but ANY kind of promotion beats what they've been doing for the past several years which is jobbing eBay sellers on fees and puttin' all the dough in the pockets of [mis-]management.

Two thumbs up! And, I'm no 20 something. There's something there for every age group. I'm hoping eBay makes a BIG splash with these ads over the holiday season. It would be a shame to see all those hard-earned sellers' fees they used to create them go completely to waste.

Since one of the things most wrong with the current eBay is 'not enough buyers,' running a decent ad campaign seems like elementary good sense.

Who knows, perhaps the permanent pall of Donahoe-induced idiocy is beginning to lift off of eBay?

Gosh, maybe eBay will even manage to tell the public who they are now, instead of alternating between trading off 15 year-old brand impressions and imitating Amazon. That would be an improvement.

I liked a couple of the ads, My House and Shine on.  But I honestly couldn't identify a lot of the goods.  And llike someone stated, why is the Ebay logo down at the bottom of the screen?
Overall, good they're back advertising.  Ebay a long time ago was the "go to" for most online shoppers, now it's Target or Amazon.

HA HA It doesn't take much from Fleecebay to make the noise happy.

Fleecebay hands the noise a piece of cheese and the noise thinks they just got the whole farm.
