New eBay CEO Eyes Digital Content But Not Streaming

By: Ina Steiner

eBay's new CEO may regret the fact it never acquired Etsy, especially now that Amazon is entering into the handmade space. eBay CEO Devin Wenig took over after the company split from PayPal at midnight on Friday, and he did a live interview with CNBC on Monday morning to share his vision.

"How do we get small artisans and creators of niche content to better monetize in an advertising dominated world? That might be an opportunity for us," Wenig said.

The question came up when he was asked about digital content. When he told CNBC's Jon Fortt he didn't think the world need another streaming music service or another movie service, Fortt shot back with, "You're the only one in Silicon Valley who seems to think that."

And so, Fortt asked, does that mean eBay will buy Etsy?

"No, we're talking digital content," Wenig said. "And I think there are many opportunities perhaps to allow digital creators to monetize better. But not compete with Netflix and Apple. We don't want to do that."

What Fortt may not have realized is that not only does eBay not do streaming content, but it prohibits the sale of digital content on its site except in the "Classified Ad" format, unlike Etsy, which encourages the sale of digital content.

Why did eBay ban digital content? We explored the issue in this blog post.

Let us know what you think of the interview and whether eBay could succeed in opening up to digital content.

Ebay HAD a unique thing going. They have all but killed that. They want to be Amazon, Etsy, or anyone but themselves. Bunch of nuts!

Ebay had it all and was recognized worldwide as being something great and unique. They WERE number one but made it subpar and despised. Not realizing or even caring for what they had was their gravest mistake. Instead of maturing and focusing on their strengths, eBay is now trying to find itself. The CEO(s) has eyes but yet cannot see.

"1) eBay is looking at ways to adjust seller performance standards and will attempt to rely less on "subjective buyer inputs" and more on objective metrics."

In other words there has been too many complaints that buyers who have very few feedbacks "up n destroy" good long time sellers who refuse to come back. Its not the sellers eBay wants, its their MONEY. While buyers rule supreme on eBay, Wenig does know he cant hide behind Paypal to cover the quarter after quarter losses. Therefore he MUST do something to reverse the landslide of sellers leaving or just not caring about the negatives they get OR their defects. They sell until they cant take the eBAy BS anymore and then leave (like 3kinds audio).

"2) eBay will bring together seller tools and reports together in one centralized spot sometime this year."  Yeh hi this is eBay, we saved you from 9000 negatives and 65 defects yesterday alone! Dont believe us? here are the supposed reports that PROVE we are your BESTEST friends in the whole world. We DO protect you, and there IS such a thing as seller protection! (as well as Santa, the Loch Ness monster, Bigfoot, the Yeti, DB Coopers millions and of course the Easter Bunny)

"3) eBay will "streamline" the returns process. The first set of changes to the returns process will launch in the fall, and it will continue to make changes into next year."  ... too many people including that idiot Pace306 keep writting the Attornies General and anyone ELSE that will listen about how we condone theft from our buyers. We cant shut all these people up and the heat from the complaints are starting to mount. Therefore under the guise of "lowest fees ever", or some other  BS that people will believe we will "adjust" the forced returns process so that the theft isnt so obvious.

Of course we also dont want to wake up Vitton, because we told the judge in that case "eBay simply provides the venue for the sale [of goods] and support for the transaction[s].”13 (Tiffany, 576 F.Supp. 2d at 475.)" and being the greatest ecommerce site "ever" - we wouldnt want to lie - or at least get caught.

But DONT WORRY INVESTORS - the gravy train will still come a rolling in the station. There are still many parts of eBay to monetize, and plenty more sellers to steal from (new ones come daily), as well as ways to steal from the sellers we already have.

All of these changes are being led by Jordan Sweetnam VP, Seller Experience at eBay Marketplaces.

ANYONE HERE want to guess what Mr Sweetnam's background is?

If you said: Big Box Store - wrong!

If you said: major ecommerce platform - WRONG!

If you said: Many many years of retail experience - WRONG AGAIN!

shall I continue? Why does eBay keep hiring people who have ZERO clue about how these things work?

Oh crap eBay is doomed. Those comments are the "most meaningless drivel I have heard in a long time" and it will almost certainly not benefit sellers.

If Ebay does start letting sellers post digital content, the seller or author better read the user agreement carefully. Read below and think of how this agreement will affect someone's copyright and marketing rights.

''Content
When providing us with content or causing content to be posted using our Services, you grant us a non-exclusive, worldwide, perpetual, irrevocable, royalty-free, sublicensable (through multiple tiers) right to exercise any and all copyright, publicity, trademark and database rights and other intellectual property rights you have in the content, in any media known now or developed in the future. Further, to the fullest extent permitted under applicable law, you waive your moral rights and promise not to assert such rights or any other intellectual property or publicity rights against us, our sublicensees, or our assignees.''

After reading the article it is nothing but more hype for wall street.
ebay is on it's last leg.  The NEW ceo is nothing but donahoe all over again.
They (ceo, BOD etc) have learned nothing in the last eight years. They have no clue as to how to run a company. How can I get a job paying the big bucks and just say lets copy what someone else is doing.  DUH.????  STUPID and whats worse is that investors are buying the load of crap. Sad world we live in.

Dear Devin Wenig,

Sellers on eBay are very gun shy about new changes as JD changed just about everything just about every quarter. From fees, feedback, defects and the search engine protocol.

If you are going to make massive changes make them good and to last. We the sellers are running low on patients so make this count. You will be judged by your first changes since we are very Raw because of past mistreatment.

Make permanent change and keep it that way. If the changes are good for us you will have our support and then we will tolerate slight refinements. Screw up and we will dog you like you are JD reincarnated.

I have already taken two thirds of my business elsewhere but if you make good I might refocus and move more business back to eBay. I for one are rooting for you but not counting on you. Good Luck you will need it.

Best Wishes
1 old beat up eBay seller

That's deep. Should have added "we might throw some spaghetti against the wall and see if that sticks".

Allow me to save the new Resident Genius, err, CEO, a lot of time and money:

1) eBay is looking at ways to adjust seller performance standards and will attempt to rely less on "subjective buyer inputs" and more on objective metrics.

a) Handling time
b) Number of actual returns for refund

The first shows how serious a seller is. The second shows whether buyers like what they're selling.

2) eBay will bring together seller tools and reports together in one centralized spot sometime this year.

What can be said?  Simply a stroke of genius!

3) eBay will "streamline" the returns process. The first set of changes to the returns process will launch in the fall, and it will continue to make changes into next year.

Stop "streamlining" the returns process every time a new Resident Genius, err CEO, takes over! Explain HFR in English that a native English speaker can understand.

Does anyone think that someone who speaks like this with a straight face actually understands how to turn ebay around?

Be on the lookout for Wenig talking about displaying ebay stuff on giant touch screens installed on mall windows.

"2 eBay will bring together seller tools and reports together in one centralized spot sometime this year."
OMG ..... THIS WILL SAVE EBAY..... how did he know that THIS  is what sellers have been hoping for and dreaming of for years ??????

The only way that returns could be MORE streamlined is if all you have to do is 1. buy 2. wait a day or so 3. hit the refund button 4. money is magically returned to your PP account.

Was item delivered.....doesn't matter.  Was it "as described"....doesn't matter. Did you break it, remove parts, use it incorrectly, wear it, read it, watch it.......doesn't matter.  Shade does not exactly match your eyes or your dog's nail polish......doesn't matter.

New corporate promo should be EBAY....ONE STOP SHOPLIFTING.

The past three "leaders" at eBay have all proven that they do not listen to the voice of their customer.

Sellers on this blog have stated over and over what the fixes are, and #1 on that list is time-ending-soonest search, and completely getting rid of Cassini.

Instead, they continually spout out poor ideas that are untested in an attempt to WOW Wall Street.

LISTEN TO YOUR CUSTOMERS EBAY.  ANY COMPANY WHO DOESN'T IS VERY FOOLISH AND IT WON'T END WELL FOR YOU.
