Four months after eBay revealed news of a major security breach, its Chief Technology Officer is stepping down. There's no indication the two events are related, however. Rather, the CTO is leaving to focus on a family matter, according to a post on the eBay blog.
eBay hailed Carges' contributions Mark Carges made over his 5-year tenure. "From overhauling search, and steering upgrades to the eBay Enterprise technology portfolio, to accelerating innovation through a number of strategic acquisitions, Mark has been instrumental to eBay's success," and it said he is leaving eBay "with a strong leadership team in place and a strong legacy that positions eBay Inc. as an innovative and strong company for future global growth."
Carges did well financially during his years at eBay.
Mark Carges compensation: 2009: $3.4 million 2010: $2.9 million 2011: $9.7 million 2012: $3.68 million 2013: $4.35 million
eBay also announced it has hired Steve Fisher of salesforce.com to "Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer (CTO) for the Marketplaces business." It doesn't appear to be an exact replacement for Carges, who was CTO of all of eBay Inc., not just Marketplaces.
And while Carges reported to eBay CEO John Donahoe, Fisher reports to eBay Marketplaces head Devin Wenig.
PayPal President David Marcus stepped down in June for a Vice President position at Facebook.
Update: Although Carges is resigning, eBay is extending him some perks, including 18 months of health insurance through COBRA. Read about the separation package eBay is providing him and information about his new role as board member at software firm Splunk in Newsflash. |
