Will the Year of the Snake Bring Slithery Sales?

By: Julia Wilkinson

Did you know the Chinese Year of the Snake started officially Sunday, bringing the year of the Dragon to a close? But while the slithery creature may not be everyone's favorite, it may be a good time for sellers to unload those vintage snakeskin bags, shoes, snake toys, and python-shaped jewelry.

But fear not, says a spokeswoman for Alibaba.com: "While snakes are often considered to be sneaky, threatening reptiles, they are also interpreted to be good omens in various Asian cultures. It was once said that the dragon fell from the sky only then to become a snake. As such, the snake is also called "little dragon."" The "lucky charm" of the year, however, is the fish: items such as a "fish-shaped fish tank" may do well on the international marketplace.

What about here in the U.S.? Some companies and designers are embracing the reptile: take a look at these Nike "Air Jordan" Year of the Snake Shoes which fetched a cool-blooded US $574 on eBay.

In Asia, the snake is getting a mixed reaction, according to this piece in The Wall Street Journal. While some markets in Hong Kong are embracing the reptile with several live snakes on display, others are bypassing it for flowers, lights, and other Valentine's Day-inspired romantic items.

Still, I wouldn't mind unloading some vintage snakeskin bags. What about you...do you plan to capitalize on this annual phenomenon, and do you think snakey stuff could help your sales? Post a comment here!

Good omen, huh? That'll be news for the native species in the Everglades.

Florida just finished the first Everglades Python Hunt with 50 killed. Pythons, that is.

Florida Fish & Wildlife is giving the snake skins back to the hunters after logging the dead snakes in for study. Who knows, maybe some will show up for sale on eBay.

Pythons are a NON-native species to the Everglades, let loose by irresponsible snake owners. They are said to be wreaking havoc on birds and other native species. Thus, the hunt.

I think I'll passsssss on the snake merchandise.

Do not care if they are a good omen or not.  Do Not like snakes period. Why did God represent the devil as a snake??

Snakes are good omens to some.  I happen to like them very much and may incorporate them into my jewelry.

That said, the "Year of the ____" does not directly influence what I make and sell any more than any other trend does. *shrug*

Snakes rid the world of vermin--rats mice roaches and other annoying and dangerous creatures.  So in that way they are VERY GOOD creatures to have around.

Maybe some snake will come and eat the rat that is The Ho?

As to those Florida pythons--not ALL of these snakes are from "irresponsible pet owners" altho quite a few sadly are.  Many of these were either escapees or got out of zoos etc during hurricanes.  Not making excuses just clarifying.  And sadly the Everglades are an "ideal" place for them to live and breed.  And eat the native wildlife.  IT is too bad that the snakes have to die but they really do NOT belong.  I did read a few times that the colder winters Fla has had are a GOOD thing in python control tho--they can't tolerate the cold and die.

We could talk about how many native species the DOMESTIC HOUSE CAT has been found to eat but I would like to live after all.  Those Crazy Cat Ladies might track me down.

Many BoDs are as corrupt as the corporations they're supposed to be overseeing on behalf of shareholders.

Instead, they are illegal interlocking directorships that typically rubber stamp whatever management wants to do.

The only shareholders ebafia's BoD represents are day traders.

Ebafia: Billions made, not one cent in dividends paid.

The Ho is actually a defective snake.

Instead of eating vermin, he eats sellers and leaves theor carcasses for the true vermin to feed on.

He and a handful of Wall Street banksters are the most disgusting, despicable entities on the planet.
