Can You Clean Out and Cash In with ThredUp?

Clean out. Cash in. And also buy good brand-name clothing for your kids, all at a decent discount. That's the promise of ThredUp, the site that strives to make it super easy for folks with children to turn that outgrown or unworn clothing into cash, as well as offers up nice quality duds at low prices.

Now might be the perfect time to do that, as your kids' new threads from the holiday season need room in the closets. I decided to finally get the kids' clothing I had around the house together and pop it into my cheerful green-and-white bag, which is sent to you free by ThredUp when you register and request it. (The postage is paid, too).

I'll share with you in another blog post how it sells, or if all the stuff is accepted to sell. ThredUp has high standards: "Focus on including any item that's excellent quality (no rips, stains, excessive wear, etc.)," said Carly Fauth, "Chief Mom" of ThredUp. I rounded up two girls' Lilly Pulitzer items, a boys' Ralph Lauren polo shirt, a brand new Indian cotton boys' shirt, and a lovely formal dress I think my daughter wore only once.

What kind of items sell best? "We definitely always see girls dresses as a top seller," said Thred Up Affiliate Program Manager Natalie Moreno. Brand-wise, they typically see "all the popular department store brands move the quickest as well: GAP, Gymboree, Janie & Jack, etc.," she said.

And "higher-end brands obviously have a higher pay out rate, but we also take in to account the quality of the items," said Carly.

Are you in the market for kids' clothes? ThredUp is currently promoting free shipping for new customers: use the code: SHIPJAN13, and you will receive free shipping on your first purchase. (Expires 1/31/13 at 11:59PM PST).

Look for my future post when I share how my stuff does. ThredUp cautions that "you may not make quite as much money on thredUP as you would spending the time selling individual pieces at a consignment store or on eBay" and to keep this in mind. On the other hand, neither are you investing your time in photographing, listing, packing and shipping, so bear that in mind too.

Interestingly, you can see what some other folks earned on their bags on the site at You can also check out users' comments on their Facebook page.

Does ThredUp sound good to you? Have you used it, or do you think you will? Post a comment here!

We sent in two bags and brought them to the UPS Store a few days ago and I will comment back how it goes.  It was very simple, fast and professional.  The postage paid label allows you to have the bags also picked up from your home so the process is very easy to follow.
