eBay Responds to Leaked News about Selling Tools

By: Julia Wilkinson

Three days ago, I quoted eBay education specialist Sally Milo, who had written in her email newsletter (dated May 31st) that eBay was working on a replacement for its seller tools Turbo Lister, Blackthorne and Selling Manager. Milo cited an "eBay Staffer" she has known for years as the source of the information, and said the changes were a "couple of years away" from becoming reality: http://www.ecommercebytes.com/C/abblog/blog.pl?/pl/2012/6/1339607457.html

Last night, we received the following email from eBay spokesperson Johnna Hoff in response to that blog post:

"Julia,

"Saw your blog post today with the information from Sally Milo about eBay selling tools. Wanted to clarify two points re: selling tools and X.commerce.

"eBay continually looks for ways to improve the selling and buying experience, but at this time, we do not intend to migrate any customers away from existing selling tools. We apologize for the confusion caused at eBay: On Location. As always, we will communicate changes that significantly impact sellers' operations on eBay with lead time to adapt."

"It's important to note that X.commerce and Magento currently are separate solutions for multi-channel businesses and at this time, are separate from eBay's suite of selling tools.

"Would appreciate an update to the post. I have also contacted Sally to explain the position.

"Thanks, Johnna."

Johnna Hoff states: " As always, we will communicate changes that significantly impact sellers' operations on eBay with lead time to adapt."

Bull Ship!!!

Back in November, eBay attempted to shuttle all shipping away from PayPal and into eBay. The change was reversed 3 weeks later, then rolled out for some sellers again 2 weeks ago. No advance announcement was made.

A week and a half ago, eBay began displaying accepted Best Offer Prices in Feedback. No advance announcement was made.

Last Week, eBay suddenly prevented sellers of Adult category Merchandise from listing Internationally. No announcement was made.

The list of unannounced policy and system changes is endless. The statement given to Johnna Hoff to release merely regurgitates the empty and often broken promises made by CEO John Donahoe while disregarding reality.

Johnna Hoff's statement should have read: "We will communicate changes that significantly impact sellers' operations in some cases. We will also continue to roll out unannounced changes whenever we see fit regardless of the negative impact those changes may have on sellers'."

First, please, a correction: I am a former eBay Education Specialist. And - I only speak for myself. (I did not expect the newsletter I send to a couple hundred of my subscribers would become public - now I know it did and may be again!)

Second - only time will really tell if eBay does away with Turbo Lister, Blackthorne (BT) and Selling Manager; I remember using Mister Lister and Seller Assistant (SA) Pro which were eBay tools once upon a time. If I recall correctly, we had about a year's notice that Mister Lister would be discontinued and about a year and a half between the announcement of Seller Assistant's death and the release of Blackthorne. As Blackthorne was and is a better tool than Seller Assistant was, should eBay replace it, I hope the replacement is a better tool than BT but one which will retain the features BT has!

If eBay does have something in the works to replace the current tools but wants to keep things quiet for the time-being, WHY? The year and a half notice of the end of SA raised hackles as does any eBay change, but communication was quite open and several of us SA users were involved in advising on and testing BT, thus we sellers were able to assist eBay in transitioning our fellow SA users to the new Blackthorne. Communication and community involvement is valuable to all. I hope that if changes are in the works, even for a couple years from now, eBay takes advantage of such involvement!

As has already been well said, John Donahoe has broken all of his promises to give advance notice of changes that will impact sellers, and to only do changes 2X per year.
At this point we know that ebay will do tthe EXACT OPPOSITE of what they promise so we plan accordingly.
As Ming says, EBAY LIES, ALWAYS HAVE AND THEY ALWAYS WILL.
JD is a thief and Joanna Hoff is a LIAR.

@ Sally Milo

It does actually make sense to not publicise any seller tools that eBay may be making.  The reason is there is no real guarantee that they would follow through and actually deliver them.  Yet if they announce some great tool that's free or cheap and never deliver then it is possible that a third party developer like myself would end up never creating an app that would have been otherwise made.  This would cause great harm to both developers and sellers.  For example if 3 years ago eBay announced they were developing a repricer that would be released Spring 2009 there would be no Price Spectre app today regardless if it was ever actually made available or not.  It is best to announce such things once you've hit the point of no return and know 100%.

Ebay lies everyday about everything and we know it and always have- since JD came around.
Exposure is increasingly TERRIBLE because slowly and methodically, ebay is steering more and more of the business to GSI- THAT IS WHAT'S GOING ON, plain and simple.
When ebay has a bad month they just increase GSI's exposure 2 points instead of 1 point and that is what is going on here, ebay has had a bad month so they click up their GSI exposure 2 points instead of 1 and we small sellers can FEEL the difference in exposure IMMEDIATLY.
This combined with the loss of the google feeds is having an increasingly serious imopact on our businesses.
After 10 years on ebay I think Ebay SHOULD HAVE TO BUY US OUT. Give me 1.5- 2 years of my total sales and I will go freely and HAPPILY.
BUY ME OUT AND I WILL GO JD, and I will be GLAD to do it.
Then GSI can have ALL OF THE BUSINESS- AND GOOD RIDDANCE EBAY!
Ebay is a lying pack of THIEVES and THIS IS NOT WHAT WE SIGNED UP FOR.
(Nice to see Phil and Ming back)

While JD is fueling the jet and picking out a new Bentley we cannot even feed our children- Thanks JD!

Sally, I bet they scared the stuffing out of you. I think--given eBay's notorious lack of interest in seller needs--that they protest too much taking you to task like this. A nickel to Blackthorne is a nickel lost by eBay. Sorry you had to take such flak for honest candor--the ways corporate employees talk on site, who could POSSIBLY know when something is ''secret''? Joanna Huff hasn't a shred of credibility with the public. Why do they keep her, I wonder?

Does anyone else have a problem with Julia Wilkerson and Auctionbytes "quoting" Sally without letting her know that?  I do.

And Dear Joanna Hoff - YOU guys don't communicate much at all. Look at the changes made in the last few months without even a posting on the Announcement board.  What a load of horse hockey.  (oh and anyone EVER seen a system problem announced on the Systems board?)... yeah me either..

When ebay dosen't POST A PROBLEM THEY are having (such as their DAILY glitches) sellers spend HOURS trying to figure out what WE are doing wrong and this is BEYOND FRUSTRATING- IT IS NOT CONSIDERATE TO YOUR CUSTOMERS JD.
We spend HOURS or run to the Geeks at Best buy only to discover from OTHER MEMBERS POSTS or AUCTIONBYTES that it is another ebay glitch- not anything WE are doing!
This is not supporting your sellers JD!!!!

Sooo--wait---is this "source" working for ebay---or NOT?  Is she a FORMER employee---or a current employee in a different position now?

Who is vouching for her cred?

And that Joanna!  Do NOT leave her alone in a dark alley with any ebay seller!  Does she kiss her mother with that mouth?

''eBay continually looks for ways to improve the selling and buying experience''????????????????
REALLY???????????
Stop the Continual looking!!!!
IT NO LONG WORKS WITH NEW MANAGEMENT AND IMPOSSIBLE DEVELOPERS WHO DON'T TEST THEIR INSANE IDEAS!!!!!!!!!
If they ever had to sell every day on ebay, they would certainly understand the frustration!!!!

I don't have a problem with the ''news'' being posted.  It's OK for Ebay to allow buyers to lie constantly in my feedback & it's OK for Paypal to hold my funds due ONLY to these same lies.

But then an article written in a newsletter gets posted and there's an issue?

So, if it's news Ebay doesn't want to get out, then we should all be respectful and not interfere.

But when you look at how Ebay treats sellers, how can you care one iota if something gets leaked?  There is no one at Ebay that I respect because of the way I see them treating so many sellers.  I hope ALL of their little secrets get out - especially the ones their stockholders NEED TO HEAR!

Then again, if their stockholders don't know what's going on at Ebay, shame on them.  If it's making them money, why worry?  HA - would like to see their faces when the whole thing goes down the tube.  That would be when they finally figure out that those small sellers used to be buyers.
