Ways to Promote Black Friday: What Will You Do?

It isn't even Thursday and you may be tired of hearing about "Black Friday." But if you sell online, you likely have your own plan as to how to get in on the promotional craze. Here are some ways we found online; this year, for one thing, sales seems to be starting early. Then I'd love to hear what you are doing for "Black Friday" (and through "Cyber Monday," and what is most effective for you from past years.

According to a recent Shop.org post, sellers are:

- Starting on Thanksgiving Day. 46% of those they surveyed this fall planned specific Thanksgiving Day promotions.

- Promoting sales early: "Almost half of retailers surveyed will be getting the word out early...29.7% a week or more before Thanksgiving Day, and another 16.2% a good 5 to six days before Turkey Day.

- Offering a mix of discounts and free shipping. "...almost half of retailers surveyed will offer special deals on specific products or categories. Approximately two out of five retailers will offer a one-day sale (41.7%)...over one-third (36.1%) plans to offer free standard shipping on all purchases."

- Using social media to promote: "Facebook is the hands-down medium of choice for retailers looking to promote in-store offers (80.6%), although just half of retailers plan to tap Twitter for similar purposes – and nearly one quarter will use blogs."

- Also using email (74.2%) and search marketing (54.8%).

- Home page promotions on websites: a missed opportunity? "Less than half will use home page messaging to get the word out about in-store offers," though shoppers are known to scour these for deals and price comparisons.

Online sellers who are smaller may be using slightly different techniques. On an Etsy forum, one seller suggests these strategies:

- A discount on an item's price
- A discount on shipping costs
- Adding extra bonuses to an order (such as "two-for-one", or "free gift with purchase")
- Adding coupon codes to their listings.

Etsy will be promoting listings with these offers. "In order to participate, *clearly state the promotion in the item description*, and tag the item with "Black Friday Etsy" AND* "Cyber Monday Etsy". Adding those tags will make that item eligible for promotion for the whole weekend (11/23-11/26)."

What promotions are you doing for Black Friday, and through Cyber Monday in some cases? What strategies have worked well for you in recent years? Or do you just hope for increased traffic to bring in more sales? Post a comment here!

Happy Thanksgiving, all! As for me, I will be marking down everything in my eBay Store...10 to 20%; I haven't decided yet. And in an ideal universe, I will check over my amazon prices to see if I've been undercut by anyone..hopefully no one's gone down to a penny..LOL. Hope you all get lots of sales but have time to relax too! ;) - Julia

I'm not running any sales this holiday season. My prices are fair enough already... and shipping is included! :-)

In order to have any 25%-off sales, I'd have to raise my prices by 25% before the sale. ~ It might fool someone, but I don't do business that way. I just offer the best price I can all year long, and so far it seems to be working okay.

As far as eBay is concerned. I'll be listing again as soon as they run another fixed-price free-listing special. (I did chuckle when I received an email from eBay letting me know that I could list ONE item for free by using their smartphone app. No thanks. It's painful enough to list already... why would I want to exert EXTRA effort to try and list something (and peck-away at a tiny keyboard) to list something using a smartphone app?!

Good luck everyone! Happy sales! Happy Thanksgiving! (And thank you to everyone at EcommerceBytes for everything they do!) <3

I'd rather discount OOAK "stuff" when my Spidey sense says it is time.

OAAK items don't do Cyber/Black/Blue Moon too well methinks.

Remember - drink lots of fluids - it helps the digestion.

(Let's see, 900 calories/day x 28 days = 1 Christmas/Kwanzaa/Dewali/Chanukkah/Saturnalia dinner) & I'll still put on 5 lbs.....

Happy Thanksgiving to all!

In my Ruby Lane shop I am doing everything 20% off for the week.  My betsy's Bijoux I am doing a happyholidays coupon code for the same amount off.  Then no discounts until well into next year.

As for shopping - I do not shop on thanksgiving and I do not shop on Black Friday.  Just personal philosophy - call me ms grinchypants scrooge...

I started my ''sale on everything'' last Saturday, and will run it thru Cyber Monday.

I think the early bird catches the worm.  A lot of people I know started hunting for bargains last weekend.  Since my sale started, sales have more than doubled.

I want the early buyers, the turkey day buyers, the black friday buyers, AND the cyber Monday buyers.

I am greedy old bastard and damn proud of it.

I'm keeping my junkables stores fresh with merch and trying to add newly listed items at least 3 times a week. Picking is getting harder lately but i'm trying :)
