Survey: Which Shipping Services Do You Use and Why?

By: Julia Wilkinson

We're about knee-deep in holiday sales prep, if not the sales themselves, and sellers will be frenetically packing and shipping more items than any other time of the year. We thought it would be a good time to look at the various shipping services available, and what you like or dislike about them. Also, what are the problems you've had, and what would features or fixes would you like to see?

To that end, we have a short survey we'd love for you to take, linked at this end of this blog. An informal survey I conducted among the sellers I know revealed most use USPS (and they love those free boxes), though those who use Fulfillment by Amazon usually use UPS, with its special FBA-discounted rates to ship their bulk inventory to Amazon's warehouses.

Some said they use FedEx if the price is right; others said it costs too much. And let's not forget Canadians...there's Canada Post too. Although this survey focuses on American shipping solutions.

In terms of problems, one seller said even when she used delivery confirmation w/ USPS, her items weren't showing up as confirmed delivered. She was told possibly the scanners weren't working.

But we'd like to hear about all your experiences, and then we will present the results along with any info from the shipping companies themselves, so this holiday season you can make well-informed shipping decisions.

Actually, we're knee deep in water and still trying to clean up from Hurricane Sandy. Christmas will be coming from the insurance company this year.

@ Spartacus hopefully, drier days are ahead, best of luck with post Sandy recovery.

As to USPS scan on delivery issues... We resolved the problem of un scanned USPS Packages.

We purchased neon green 1 x 2 5/8 address labels. We print "Thank You For Your Purchase We Appreciate Your Business" on them then place them at the bottom of the USPS Shipping label.

Our results have been amazing...

Carriers are accustomed to scanning packages when they see the neon green color USPS uses on the Delivery Confirmation stickers.

Buyers get a polite thank you before they open the package.

Before we started doing this about 10% to 15% of USPS Packages were delivered with no scan. After adding the label, we have had 99% of our packages scanned on delivery.

Ric - I applied a similar idea. I use a neon green highlighter to highlight the words ''USPS TRACKING NUMBER'' above the barcode, and the printed number below the barcode on the printed label, and have had the same results. (Note: I don't highlight the barcode) It seems to be enough to draw attention to scanning.

I never really checked DC, relying on buyers to let me know if something didn't arrive, but now I have checked:  84 packages in a row from the 3rd week of October (skipping intl.) all showed delivered.  The green highliter idea seems like a solution in search of a problem.
