On this Antiques Friday (hashtag #ABAntiquesFri on Twitter) we're going to look at what sold best during the run-up to the holiday season last year, hoping it gives us some clues for what to start stocking this year. We've got info from TIAS.com and eBay, and are waiting on some stats from RubyLane. I'd like to also hear from you personally: what sold best for you during the whole holiday period, roughly end of October through the end of December?

On TIAS last year, it's interesting to note in the top-selling categories of antiques & collectibles from Oct. 1, 2011 thru Jan 1, 2012, the "Holiday & Seasonal" collectibles are at #3. No. 1 and 2 on the list are China and Dinnerware and Glass. Note that the list is based on the volume of items sold in each category listed, not the dollar value of the items in each category, said Phil Davies of TIAS. Here's the list from the top down:

China and Dinnerware
Glass
Holiday and Seasonal
Vintage Sewing
Kitchen Collectibles
Jewelry
Paper and Ephemera
Porcelain and Pottery
Clothing
Toys
Advertising
Memorabilia
Figurines
Books
Coins and Currency
Dolls
Lamps and Lighting
Art
Photographica
Music Related

What about on eBay? If we look at top decorative collectibles, we see Christopher Radko Glass Ornaments, Department 56 items including 2011 introductions or retirements; Hallmark Keepsake ornaments 2011 including Star Wars, Star Trek and Harry Potter; and Hummel Goebel 2011 Annual Angel and Holiday figurines.

"Hot!" holiday items include bigger decorations and electrical stuff such as  Artificial Frasier Fir Christmas Trees, GE Color Effects outdoor light sculpture, and not to be outdone by the Joneses, Inflatable Christmas Yard art - "Polar Bears, Penguins, Santa, Reindeers."

Toys and games that sold well on eBay include brands recognizable from years past: Littlest Pet Shop Collector's starter pack; Calico Critters Cozy Cottage starter set; Dora's Explorer Girls; and Fisher-Price Fisher-Price Disney's Dance Star Mickey.

What was "Hot!"? There's that red rogue again: Sesame Street "Let's Rock! Elmo With Bonus Guitar."

Where are all the China and dishes on this list? You've got me. You can see the whole eBay 2011 Holiday Hotlist here.

What sold well for you? Did you run out of anything? What was, as Dr. Phil would say a "dog that just wouldn't hunt"?

As for me, last year most of my sales came from Amazon. I sold a good number of cookbooks...gotta love Betty Crocker "red pie"; history books such as my old standby Winston Churchills, catalogs. and almost any toy or video game I had up. I did sell some China and dishes on eBay; I think this is a great time of year to sell those.

Tell us what sold for you...and what stank up the joint...leave a comment here!

Decorative Collectibles. My best sellers were (handmade) hanging  ornaments in star or cross design.  They sold out by the middle of November.

I sell vintage costume jewelry.  It has always been easy to sell, easy to ship.  I had rather not ship china or glassware, so I stick smaller items.

We are in Inuit Art business. Some older Inuit carvings by early artists from 1950s, 1960s are highly collectable and there is a huge demand for them year round.
