What Would You Tell New President of eBay Marketplaces?

By: Ina Steiner

eBay named Devin Wenig President of Global Marketplaces Business on Tuesday. Wenig comes from the publishing field rather than ecommerce or retail and was a top executive at Thomson Reuters in New York.

eBay said Wenig has "extensive global operating and leadership experience in rapidly changing, disruptive competitive environments, giving him a deep understanding of how to develop and grow innovative global technology platforms to serve changing customer needs."

Wenig said he received many good offers after he left TR. So why did he choose eBay?

Fluent in social media, he told friends he was lured by Silicon Valley. And, according to eBay's offer letter of August 30th, he was also lured by $13.5 million in salary and compensation. It's also possible he seems himself as a likely successor to CEO John Donahoe - he references following in Donahoe's footsteps in a letter to friends (see EcommerceBytes Newsflash story).

But will eBay users give Wenig slack as he takes control of their turf?

Wenig is new to the industry, and he'll be looking to get the lay of the land. What would you tell him about the challenges you face that eBay could help with, and what should he turn his attention to first?

Hey Devin. Three things.

1. Please look after your customers and be sensitive to their needs. Your evil CEO thinks that buyers are the customers. Wrong. It is the sellers who pay the bills.

2. Remember - eBay is only a venue.

3. KISS

No slack from me.

If he needed slack, he should have taken another offer.

At $13.5 million, he should already have all the answers.

Absolutely nauseating.

1. International sellers have NO control over delivery times or customs Controls ...so dont allow DSR on International sales

2.International sellers (not located in the Country of registration) ...cant be subjected to domestic postage caps as in UK clothing cap of 3.99GBP...idiotic

3.Put all DSR in the garbage bin as International sellers have NO control over 2 of them

4. remember sellers are YOUR customers so treat with respect

5.Start looking for a new job..you will not last in this pit of vipers

I would not tell him anything except that he must be a fool to take such a position beneath the current cretinous chief headless turkey. I hope that he was simply unemployed and desperately looking for anything, if so, he has nothing to lose. Conversely, I hope he did not leave a secure job because surely he is not going to be in a position to change any of the chief headless turkeys “eBay turnaround plans” and, as the eBay Marketplace continues its slide down the toilet, as it most surely will, it will undoubtedly next be him that gets the Bartz treatment.

First off we have been inundated with Chinese crap on eBay, and made in China crap now for years throughout the market place. Only to find out after the fact of jd's hoping to increase 30/40% in their market with China.....Again only to find out that China has supplied weapons to Libya, and Muammar  Qaddafi, in the wake of conducting business here.

The economy is terrible and people are cutting back. Well here is one way. If you really need a widget shop around but by all means DON''T buy Chinese crap either on eBay or in the market place....

Buy USA.... it will send a message to eBay, our Government, and it will boost our soldiers morale in the wake of 9-11.

Don't deal with countries who deal with terrorists.

Learn self control. After finding out what China did I intend to learn self control myself, and in my own small way teach them a lesson and not buy from them.

As I see it, purchasing from a country that sells arms to a known terrorist country is a country I DO NOT want to do business with.

Your last thread said it all FIRE the BUM, , give this new guy a chance and if he does not see past the  disruptive innovation and all the problems it created, FIRE him as well.  JMO

Ina I love your newsletter and site. I read it religiously! However, you should really consider turning off blog comments, since the people who post here rarely (if ever) have anything constructive to say.

I don't know if they think their posts are funny, but basically they are like broken records, with the same message over and over. We all know that eBay isn't the same place it was 5 years ago - get OVER it! Come here with something constructive to say or it's not really worth saying.

As for Mr. Wenig, consider that eBay was built on the backs of small sellers. We've been squeezed by rules (and fees) that are designed to help large Diamond retailers that are sucking the life out of the sellers who are the heartbeat of eBay.

Who besides Bill Gates, Steve Jobs or the head of Google has enough bandwidth to explain to the new guy how to fix ebay? LMAO!

He wont read any of this - but just for giggles - here ya go:

1) As mentioned before - start valuing your customers and stop treating them as if they are the enemy. WE the sellers pay all the bills - treat us as if we matter.

2) Get rid of the outsourced seller help and get real people who have the power to effect solutions not just follow a guide book. A) power to act B) English Speaking

3) Return the ability to leave buyer feedbacks as to level the playing field

4) Curb VERO and the illegal crap they do to sellers who are just following US trade rules. Stop using VERO to punnish sellers at the request(s) of manufactorers who sell thier items on EBAY. Educate them - they only words they know are MC019 XXXXXXX violation DMCA law ... when most of the violations they incorrectly state are NOT in the DMCA law.

6) Stop cluttering up the homepages with companies that kick you back money so that they get Deal of the Day  ...

7) Segment out Auctions and give them the proper respect

8) Exlain to overseas buyer the realities of life. A) Sellers dont control the post office and how long it takes to receive items B) Yes Virginia you DO have to pay customs and duties

9) Correct the non paying bidder system - it plays havoc with inventory and makes sellers wait too long for payment/resolution

10) Remove Donohoe - he doesnt know how to run any kind of business!

Pick out a nice lifeboat. The ship is sinking, the sellers are leaving, the buyers are wondering where the unique items went.
Abusing all the smaller sellers will only send ebay into the garbage can.

I wouldn't tell him anything. I'd ask him to please show up on the ebay discussion boards. Cobb used to do it, meg never did IIRC, JD won't even post a public  announcement to the 'ebay community', nevermind communicate with ebay buyers/sellers directly, at least not with those that weren't very carefully hand picked and screened beforehand and limited in what they could say.

It'd be nice for a change.

If he's any kind of good ceo-he'll READ the comments, and should reply here. If there is no reply-then he is just another lip service. Sellers are the real customers on Ebay, NOT THE BUYERS. Chinese merchandise should be LABELED that way. Guaranteed fast delivery OUT OF THE USA with a delivery confirmation costs $30 to $40 via the cheapest way (USPS express)-even on small $2 items. That is hurting the small stores that have one-of-a -kind items, and can't afford to lose the sale & postage via pay pal dispute. The independant insurance companies (Endicia) have already stopped offering insurance to Greece...AND Italy, Canada, and Australia, Korea should be next. The reason? Yes, a high percentage of thiefs. Thiefs that know if a package arrives without a delivery confirmation -that they can file and get ALL their money back in 10 days. We never had a problem until a delivery confirmation was "required" to beat a Pay Pal/Ebay dispute on overseas transactions. Simple solution : make overseas transactions from the USA NOT COVERED, unless the buyer pays for that service. Simple. Most countries have reasonable prices for a delivery confirmation out of their country-the US does NOT. Or work a deal like the one you did with delivery confirmations with China & USPS... I tire of charging $40 to ship an LP or $30 for a 45 record that could actually cost $10 plus shipping! I am tired of explaining YOUR rules to the buyers-isn't that YOUR JOB? And stop allowing the board/ceo/anyone in Ebay from selling their yearly stock bonus-when Dono sells his, it really shows the rest of us what to think about his poor assessment of Ebay's future. Lower or ellimate listing fees for stores and auctions. Put your future on SALES not fees. The latest "lowering of the fees" DOUBLED my fees. Thanks. Bad sellers & buyers are still on Ebay-Amazon gets rid of them-what's your problem? Try advertising again-online ads are good to poor, but TV reigns supreme and you know this. If something better comes along, we will all jump ship. You've simply been lucky that the billionaire Seattle airheads have not done this for the world's markets. Hire someone that KNOWS THE MAIL ORDER BUSINESS. Just because they had a real "brick & mortar" store in the 70s/80s does NOT mean they know anything about MAIL ORDER. They are 2 different animals. Many successful sellers in the brick world can not handle mail order. DSRs don't bother me at all-I always am in the top 1%. But remember that 1 out of every 200 people is a jerk. And UK buyers are the worst when it comes to leaving fair DSR ratings (I would suggest that they NOT be allowed to ever leave feedback-someone should explain to me how this happened to such a fine country-is it the schools? Or the low amount of TV channels?) ...Bon Appetite.

What would I tell him? Hmmm...All the best suggestions have already been used, but the best one would be to convince the current CEO to step down. On the other hand, Who is worth $13.5 million a year?  Oh, and pay your taxes for gosh sakes!! What's up with all the Chinese crap on your site? Stay out of sellers business :-) We are just a venue? I do not sell or buy on ''Greedbay'' at all, nor would I ever recommend to anyone to buy from there or sell on there :-)

I would like to think that someone getting paid 13.5 million doallars a year should have an extremely good understanding of what he is walking into in the first place. But as many have said remember that your customers are the sellers not the buyers. I loved selling on ebay years ago. I made money, I had thousands of positive feedbacks, then Meg and her gang followed by Donohoe came in, I got out of there. Ebay was working great and then they came in a broke it. Not sure if anyone can ever glue it back together again. But if he wants a great company, he needs to remember how ebay started and what made it a great company to buy and sell on. Then he needs to see if he can bring that additude back. However, for many of the great sellers that have been chased off the site, I think it is too late to get us to come back and so ebay has lost, to its detriment, thousands of good honest sellers that won't touch ebay again with a 20 foot pole at this point in time. He has to come in a prove himself and the first way to do it is cut his own pay in half because as president he will NEVER work as hard as his little sellers struggling to sell to earn the grocery, utility and rent money out of necessity. Let the other half of this salary go towards cutting fees. How in this economy someone can think they are worth over a million a month when they are taking that salary off the backs of the little guys is hard to take and understand.
