Yahoo's Bartz vs eBay's Donahoe: Tale of the Ticker Tape

By: David Steiner

The Yahoo board of directors fired its CEO on Wednesday. Carol Bartz was an outsider brought in to turn things around in 2009. That may sound familiar to readers - eBay CEO John Donahoe was an outsider hired in 2005 and was groomed to take over from Meg Whitman, who left in early 2008.

Both CEOs were charged with turning things around for their respective companies, and both have had a difficult time of it. So how have shareholders fared under Bartz and Donahoe? The tale of the ticker tape is below.

Update 9/7/11: A comment got me thinking about eBay's stock price during John Donahoe's tenure compared to their closest competitor, Amazon.com, across the same time span. So here is the Tale of the Ticker Tape - Round II:

Totally Agree, the shareholders must be total Donkeys to keep going down this road to ruin...there is no value in holding eBay stock and thats with the money magnet Paypal, something is very wrong with all the billions that they make and no dividends or stock still in the 30 bucks range..take a look at Facebook, Google or Amazon its all +++

As much as I dislike that eBay molester, the stock comparison is unfair. Of course most all stocks tumbled in 2008 due to the financial crisis.

eBays stock was $14.13 at close on Jan 13/09 (per Google Finance), so it has done much better than that of Yahoo since that time.

Another comparison: Amazon was $51.45 on that same date, it is $216.18 now, near its all time high. eBays high way back in 2004 was $58.20

Ebay's January 2009 low had little or nothing to do with anything other the Street telling ebay to sell Skype.

Of course, it was also a great time for ebay to buy its own stock back to reward all of ebay's whiz bang MBAs.

The market has rejected The Ho's Nixon strategy.

Many Americans are looking for ways now more than ever NOT to buy Chinese made products as The ho builds warehouses to disguise the fact they'll soon be selling CCC (cheap Chinese crap) and disguising the location of Chinese sellers to make their products palatable to Americans.

Pierre still calls the shots. He needs to take his head out of his Hawaiian coconuts.

Carol Bartz: +6.7%? Not on the 87c increase in share price indicated in the graphic.

Anyway, she probably was not kicking back a share of whatever spoils there were with the people who count: the company’s directors. How else can the chief headless turkey at eBay still be in charge of the eBay Farmyard with his cretinous decisions continuing to literally pour the eBay Marketplaces down the toilet.

And, what would the eBay share price be without PreyPal’s contribution? Bear in mind that, other than for PreyPal’s mandated use on whatever there will eventually be left of the Donahoe-destructed eBay Marketplace, the banks will elsewhere see PreyPal off once they get their online act together. Maybe then will see the back of this fool Donahoe.

@Philip Cohen

Yes, 6.7%

@Joe Average

The numbers reflect the closing stock price of each CEO on the day they assumed their offices. On March 31, 2008 the closing stock price for eBay was 29.84. If the stock price for eBay was 14.13 on January 29, 2009, then it lost more than 50% of its value in less than one year.

It would be interesting if it were averaged out over their tenor with the company. There was a time when eBay's stock was down to 9%, More lows then highs.

I think that.... - % would be even higher.

As for the other company Yahoo. I never checked them but figure if they fired her with an increase at her closing bell as ceo and not jd, it has me wondering, they are both very lg companies. JMO

He should have been fired years ago. He's done NOTHING good for the company. He's destroyed the lives of small sellers. Destroyed a vibrant marketplace. Treats his customers like crap. Made the once hallowed ''level playing field'' decidedly NOT level. Bleed those remaining with onerous fees. ''Disrupted'' the market with idiotic ideas. The stock price says it all. What the hell is wrong with this board? Are they on drugs? This company needs to get back to it's roots. This company had it all, and threw it away, and now does nothing to fix it.

I know nothing about finance etc but just my 3 rd grade math skills would tell me something is wrong here.

Is there no way to discover the address' of the Fleecebay Board members and have people write to them?  Might not make much impact for one person but the -ahem- power of numbers---

And what was the snippet I saw sometime this week about some judge deciding that there was NO CONFLICT OF INTEREST between the New York Times and some Board (I think) member of EBAY?  Well now this goes a LOOOOONG way to explaining why NYT NEVER comments on ebay in the finance or other sections (except to mention fab finds some person featured in the Design Section found on there---which I find hysterical since the people who SELL those fab one of a kind and antiqui-ee and unique items are the very SAME sellers Jo the Ho wants KIA.  Just sayin)  But the "treatment" of ebay at NYT is if anything at all fawning and their failure to publish the numbers etc is---disturbing.  And followed by WSJ etc.

Not one media outlet sees that the Emperor indeed HAS NO CLOTHES

What is there to add?

The numbers tell it ALL.
If you were to remove the Pay Pal money from the equation I'm pretty sure you'd find eBay is close to financial collapse...

And it's due to nothing more than the Board swallowing the kool aid that idiot Donadumbass has been feeding them for the past several years.

They have sat back on their lazy butts and watched idly while they let that clown utterly DESTROY what was once a great venue...

So be it...

FOLKS, IF YOU WANT TO SEND EBAY MESSAGE THIS IS A GREAT SITE INA HAS FOR VOICE YOUR CONCERNS & COMPLAINTS ABOUT EBAY...

BUT FOR CRYING OUT LOUD - PUT YOUR MONEY WHERE YOUR OUTRAGE IS AT BEING TREATED LIKE DIRT BY EBAY AND BUY FROM OTHER VENUES!!!

Not to mention - Sellers... YOU'RE the ones enabling that bunch of CROOKS, THIEVES and LIARS at eBay to treat you the way they do... START LISTING ON OTHER VENUES FOR GOD'S SAKE... It' won't take but a short 6 months to bring down the entire house of cards at eBay thieving Inc. if everyone would just band together and REFUSE TO USE THE SITE for any reason - buying, selling or otherwise.

Once they are on their knees JUST MAYBE the Board will find the guts to actually do something productive and get that headless turkey and his gang of thieves and liars out of there...

And replaced with people who KNOW how to run a site such as eBay, UNDERSTAND that the SELLERS are the lifeblood of the site, NOT the buyers, and JUST MAYBE they will come to the realization that when you treat the people WHO PAY YOUR FREAKING SALARY LIKE CRAP THEY WON'T PUT UP WITH IT AND WILL LEAVE!!!!

Until you're ready to replace actual ACTIONS with what is now only a willingness to verbally complain you don't really have much of a right to complain at all people... JUST SAYING.

Bartz could turn Yahoo Auctions back on, now that Ebay doesn't use Yahoo ads. She just won't do it. We've certainly implored her to with our letters and emails. She's just another Donahoe.

Theres no one with the balls to take our money for Time Ending Soonest.

Cowards.

The graphs show it all.  Ebay's growth is stagnant as Amazon blows Ebay away.  Growth companies need to add members but also maintain members.  Both Ebay and Amazon have added new members the past 3 years, but Ebay has chased away millions of their members through bad policy, while Amazon maintains most of their members.  Ebay has to lower store fees since 70% or more of their sales are from stores.  The high store fees make sellers raise their fixed prices which leads many buyers to no longer shop on Ebay or to compare Ebay with other sites; instead of shopping exclusively on Ebay

In a way, you almost have to give JD credit.

Donahoe bamboozled the Board of Directors with an alleged 3 year turn around plan and played them for suckers.

Here we are in year four of that three year plan. There have been tons of changes but nothing that could be labeled an improvement.

When you look closely, JD's plan  was little more than a series of substantial fee increases phased in over three years. When that failed to generate growth, he imposed a new fee on shipping costs with the goal being to compel sellers to roll shipping costs into the selling price. The end result is with so many more sellers including shipping in the selling price of items, JD is claiming there is growth.

The fact is transactional counts are flat. The only reason it appears that there has been recent growth in eBay sales is that larger numbers of sellers have added the cost of shipping to the selling price which gives the appearance that sales have grown.

At the rate JD is selling off shares, it appears as though he realizes his plan has been a failure. Perhaps the eBay Board of Directors is waking up to the fact that John Donahoe's tenure has been dismal failure..

Amazing! I'm not an economic guy, but I know mathematics. It looks very bad go negative and comparison to a no more interesting company like Yahoo make it worst. After all the ''policies'' it is clear that a lot of people don't care about them or see them as a company that will not grow anymore.

eBay forget that many times the people interesting in the stocks are the fans or followers. I know 2 different people that are WWE Fans, one get offered stocks when their value was in the lowest point and other was owner of stocks for some years.

What a crook and failure to the people!

It's amazing how few comments there are here on this topic, most likely because everyone already knew ebay was making millions off us stupid small sellers, we keep trying to make things work, supplying product to buyers and we just get less and less. Donahoe, you royally suck for what you have done to our beloved ebay.

Perhaps some day you will get yours the way you have shafted so many of the hard working independent sales people.
Disruptive innovation =  Decimation of livelihood.
