How Are You Dealing with Canada Postal Strike?

By: Ina Steiner

If you sell internationally, have you made any changes as a result of the Canadian postal strike (lockout)?

We've been reporting on the Canadian postal union strike and last week's Canada Post lockout that basically shut down mail going to and from Canada. On Saturday, the U.S. Postal Service stopped accepting mail bound for Canada except for its premium Global Express Guaranteed service (powered by FedEx Express).

Initially people thought the Canadian government would quickly pass back-to-work legislation, but that hasn't been the case. This article from the Edmonton Journal says the two sides have until Thursday to try and work things out before Parliament may vote on such a bill.

eBay alerted users to the lockout (eBay.com announcement and eBay Canada announcement). While it's adding messaging to the customer flow, this has the potential to harm eBay sellers' feedback ratings.

How are you dealing with the (lockout), and has it had any effect on your online business?

Update: A good resource for checking mail service domestically and internationally is found on the USPS website, it updates the information daily. And the first commentor is correct, the union began rotating strikes, but it was Canada Post that caused the national shutdown through the lockout.

How is Canada Post on strike? It is a LOCK OUT. A strike is the employees refuse to work and holds hostage the company. A LOCK OUT which happened on Tuesday of last week is when the company locks the doors of office to prevent workers from working. Please know the difference fellow business people.

This mess began with a series of rotating strikes, which undoubtedly would have become a full fledged strike.  So, lock them out & get the show on the road!  Now settle it.  This is having a detrimental effect on business in this country.  We need to find alternative mailing methods because this will happen again!

Canada Post and its employees have a disagreement. I am being hurt by this. Does not seem fair. I need the post to export my product to the USA but instead, I lose sales. I must find a permanent replacement for the post.

My Ebay business is pretty well dead in the water. With Canada Post I mail an envelope to the USA for $2.67, Fedex and Purolator want between $18 & $23 for the same. It simply is not in the cards.

Canadian buyers have treated me pretty badly. So I don't sell to them anymore unless they pay in cash on pickup or a postal money order.

I live in Michigan and the last thing I would do is ship to the people in Canada. They have a certain way of being real thorns.

I use USPS Priority Mail International to mail several parcels a month to Canada from my ebay business. As of now I have two purchases waiting to ship to Canada now. I've been in contact with both of these customers and they are both willing to wait it out instead of paying the more expensive Global Express. Good communication with your customers is key. I've never had anything other than many good experiences with our friends to the north.

Canada Post's holding company own big stakes in courier companies (Puralator, Fedex...) so they have no rush to reach an agreement with these idiot canada post's employees. They just needed to don't deliver ads & junk mails.

Canada Post employees and the union that represents them do no care about the businesses that are suffering or the people affected by their greed.  So why should the general public support them?  They are already overpaid and have turned down Canada Post's offer of $21/hr starting wage for new employees.  They insist it remain at $25/hr.  And now they are saying they are locked out and it's not their fault.  THEY went on strike and left CPC no alternative.  I think that the greedy union members need a reality check and should all be canned.  Give them a taste of the private sector and then let's hear them complain.  Belly up to the trough you greedy union pigs!

Really, I haven't seen a change in the number of buyers we get from Canada, 6 already this week. We have sent them all emails giving the option to wait or have a full refund.  So far they have all said they would wait.

" Belly up to the trough you greedy union pigs!"

Spoken like Republican who deliberately fails to understand that successful labor unions raise ALL boats (wages) and that labor unions were a major factor in creating the post WWII middle class that Republicans are desperately trying to eradicate so the rich can have 99% of the wealth instead of the 90% they have now.

Are the NFL players "greedy union pigs?"

Think you might have a problem with Canadian buyers during this work stoppage?

Put Canada temporarily on your no ship list.

Thankfully I've only had one order from Canada since the strike began. I've talked with the buyer and I'm holding shipment until the strike is over since they aren't in a rush to get it. It's a pain in the neck for me but the vast majority of the business is domestic so it's not hurting me at all. However I know sellers in Canada who are really hurting right now because of the cost of shipping to the US using other companies.

There is strike?  Didn't notice. Snail mail is going absolete and I think the government is helping by forcing them back to work before we all make other arrangements.

As a Canadian eBay seller, if I had to rely on Canada Post to ship internationally or to the US, I would be out of business.

Canadian postal rates on items that exceed 2 lbs are 2 to 5 times the cost of USPS rates.  If you are selling heavier items, it's not unusual to have rates in excess of $150 to ship overseas and I'm not talking very heavy here.  For instance, a 6" cube parcel that weighs 3 lbs would cost $72 to send to France.  By USPS, it would cost $33.  That same parcel to California would cost $25 using the slowest service by Canada Post and $12.50 by USPS for Priority service. A 12" cube parcel that weighs 5 lbs would cost $145 to Australia.  By USPS, that same parcel would cost $46 to ship.

Luckily, we live near the border, so can cross the border with our items and ship through a USPS outlet, as long as the item is worth less than $200 or our total shipment is worth under $2000.

Can you imagine the feedback that we would have if we had to charge $25 to ship something to the US that normally would cost an American seller $10?

And don't think that Canada Post is cheap for domestic delivery either.  It is much cheaper for me to ship a parcel to Vancouver from Maine than it is from Quebec.  Unfortunately, I can't circumvent my own country's domestic postal service due to Universal Postal Union agreements.

So ask me if I have much sympathy for Canada Post.  It shouldn't cost them any more to ship an item overseas than if does for the USPS.  It's just a matter of gouging.  Canada Post has had 16 straight years of profitability, recently posting year after year of record profits.

There's nothing wrong with profits.  However, Canada Post is a crown corporation and as such has a duty to enable Canadian business to be competitive rather than exploit what in essence is a monopoly position built by the Canadian taxpayer over decades.

I am a Canadian with a smal-medium business that relys HEAVILY on Canada Post.  Now I have to pay triple to ship parcel or moer gas to deliver myself.  My business is greatly affected, so who's going to compensate me?!  I'm so happy that the government has stepped in to legislate them back!  The Union is greedy and these people should be bloody lucky that they have such good jobs during this economic downfall!  I'm glad Canada Post locked them out!  I don't think you should be getting paid your regular wage AND striker pay if you're working!  Far as I'm concerned, you forfeit your regular wage once you start a strike!  You can't get both!  Go GOVERNMENT GO!!!!

Because of the strike, I now travel to the U.S. twice a week to mail my orders. When the strike ends, I'm going to continue going to the U.S.! Postage is cheaper, the mail is faster, basic services like tracking and insurance are available and cheap, and international parcels are MUCH cheaper to send.

I am shipping from the US to Canada. Thus far my Canadian customers have been very understanding.

I set them up with USPS email tracking. The buyer knows when I ship, when it reaches Canadian customs and when it is released.

For example, here is the info for an order I received 6/7/201:
