Are Your Listings Being Seen in eBay Search Results?

A reader sent me a link to an eBay discussion thread with a note that said an eBay seller's listings for new records were not showing up in search results.

The original poster (OP) on the discussion board thread wrote, "If you are a seller of new vinyl LPs on ebay, did you know that your LPs are not searchable when searched under the New condition." He explained how searching for "AC/DC vinyl", then select "Records", then select "New" only brought back results from international sellers.

He then wrote, "I checked completed listings and found that International sellers completion rates war far better than any U.S. sellers for the identical item although the U.S. sellers price was much better. Since my calls and emails about this have gone unanswered, I am pulling the remainder of my LPs as they close out their month."

Another seller asked the OP if he was using the "item condition" attribute, since he was filtering his search results by the "New" attribute. (eBay calls product attributes item specifics.) Sure enough, he was not - because, he said, eBay's Sell Your Item listing form does not support item condition.

I'm not sure why eBay's own listing form would not support important product attributes. I did a Google search for "does turbo lister support item condition," and a lot of people have problems with this issue when using eBay's Turbo Lister tool as well- and there are also suggestions on how to get it to work.

It's worth conducting searches on the marketplaces on which you sell to make sure your items are being displayed in search results. The original poster in this discussion board thread found a problem by doing just that.

And if marketplaces are unresponsive to your questions, it's worth asking your colleagues for help!

For any category, it is possible to add an "item specific" so there is no reason to say eBay does not support "Condition."

However, since vinyl records are generally an obsolete format, perhaps eBay does not feel it's necessary to differentiate between "used" and "new."  If vinyl records are now being made again, all it takes is a request to add "Condition" to the category.

New vinyl records have become a bright little niche collecting category that deserves a lot of attention.

I got the same search results the OP in the thread got-there's a "new" box to check if you're a browser, but no corresponding Specific to check if you're a (US) seller.

It would appear to me that there IS a box to check if you're a seller from another location.

That'd be consistent with eBay's long time confusion over what a "new" record even is.....

Had you considered moving to China and selling cheap Chinese made trinkets?

That's how to make your listings show up. Maybe someday ebay will give you the vaunted "no touchy" sign in their T & S Dept

File complaints with the FTC at ftc complaintassist.gov site.
If your losses are great, consult an atty, file a lawsuit. Make blogs and videos urging people not to patronize ebay/pp in any way.

Another blatant error by management that could not run a successful yard sale let alone this marketplace.

eBay is the only company that will allow buyers to search by an attribute that is not available for sellers to utilize in their listings.

Which overpaid MBA allowed this one to fall through the cracks, and why are they still collecting a salary?

It would be wise for sellers with unsuccessful listings caused by yet another eBay "glitch" to demand refunds for listing fees for any and all listings that were unsearchable because of eBay's incompetence.

It's long been my advice that eBay should quit trying to define records and just adopt the standards used by real collectors.

"New" is not a grade you'll ever see in record collecting lingo.

Trust me there is something not showing up, this has been amazing this spring, so dead with sales.

My friend has many seller accounts, and she has noticed that no sales on any accounts for days, then all the sudden sales on 4 or so selling accounts on the sames day, then they basically all die again at the same time then pick up the same time, I have experienced this also.

Now I assume logically that it is unlikely all accounts don't sell the same days, them they all get sales the same day when not the same accounts.

That tells me they look like their running, but there is a glitch, or intentional block it seems that ebay puts on to restrict sales, or give error to potential buyers

I am sick of the sh*t !
eBay is broken from DONAHOE !

I have had a problem for several years with the condition attribute in the Records category... I use a third party auction management program and the last time that item specifics were updated in Records a Condition section was added. But whenever I have tried to use it (by adding New or Used or Still Sealed as a attribution), eBay rejects that aspect of the listing and the Condition section never shows up in the listing. I have tried numerous times to add a Condition attribute to a Record listing on eBay and have never been able to do it... you would think a simple Used, New or Still Sealed attribute in a Record listing would be a easy thing to do (and quite helpful) but eBay does not allow it in the Record category for some reason from what I can tell. Strange.

@Kevin

I agree with the point you made about foreign sellers getting preferential treatment; however, your post was actually offensive.  GROW UP!

Since more than 99% of all the vinyl records are not new; it's best for ebay to not have the new and used condition; which for American sellers they don't have.  They have it for non-Americans but what if on the American sell item page; a vinyl dealer clicked on the add your own item specific and wrote the word New?  If I was the OP I would try that for a liting and then see if it showed up in the search using New for item specifics.  I agree with YDDD in that it seems lately I'll go 2 or 3 days without a sale and then get 4 or 5 sales in 1 day from 4 or 5 different people.  It's as if my store items are only seen maybe 3 days a week.  I think server issues might be the reason for a lot of Ebay's policy moves lately

To Ummmm: an EBay CSR actually said "No Touchy Jacky Sheng" was a sign posted by EBAY for their Csrs to stay away from a certain seller. IF anyone is offensive, it's Ebay with their UNAMERICAN anti USA seller stance, while allowing Communist Chinese to overrun & ruin the site.

It's more likely a bandwidth issue. I can well image that when they set up their new data center these headless turkeys forgot to ask the telco to lay a bit of fibre optic in the street outside; subsequently, they are probably still trying to output all their data via a "twisted copper pair".

The statement that you can add a condition item specific is incorrect in some categories. I always try to add an "Item Condition" item specific when listing in the vintage clothing categories and every time I get an error message from eBay that it is not supported in that category and therefore dropped.

It doesnt really matter if things are visible or not, because buyers are not visiting the site. eBay has jumped the shark. If you want to sell you have to give the item away, and then add free overnight shipping and be prepared to kiss buyers behinds. eBay is a has-been auction site.
