eBay Removes Selling Activity from My eBay Summary Page

By: Ina Steiner

Initial reaction from sellers to changes eBay made to the My eBay account pages today has not been positive. Sellers posting on the eBay boards about the changes do not seem pleased with eBay's decision to move the "selling activity" modules from the summary page - especially those who had customized their My eBay pages.

One AuctionBytes reader wrote, "eBay totally changed the My eBay summary page today. And it sucks! Please write on this so eBay knows we don't want this change! A "summary page" should be a summary. We want a page to look at a snapshot of our selling, sold, bidding, and won all in one place. Why would eBay change it when it was perfect the way it was?!!? Come on eBay!"

Sellers on eBay's discussion board also complained that they would have to click more times to see information that had all been previously available on the summary page.

According to eBay, "You can now access all of your selling activity in the "Sell" menu on the left side of My eBay pages. If you subscribe to Selling Manager, your selling activity is in the Selling Manager menu."

Many were caught off guard by the changes, which eBay announced today along with other changes to My eBay, including the ability to see a 3-year history of purchases on the marketplace.

Update: eBay spokesperson Johnna Hoff responded to our inquiries (apologies for a delay in updating this post). She said the changes were designed to help buyers quickly determine items on which they should take action, which has the potential to increase sales activity. And, she said, sellers could still see all selling activity on a single page on the Selling Manager Summary page (Selling Manager subscribers) or on the All Selling page (non-subscribers).

"Sellers can make either of these pages the first page they come to after clicking the My eBay link at the top of eBay pages by changing the default My eBay page. (Go to any page in My eBay, click the General Settings link at the top right corner, then choose "All Selling" from the default menu.)

"When updates include business-impacting changes and sellers need to take action to implement them, we let them know well in advance."

I agree. I just noticed this change and its very inconvenient. I still have not been able to find the awaiting payment items that used to show up on the my ebay page. This was a dumb move and I don't understand why they would even do it?

I was just hit in the face with change. I had the page customized and changed to make it easy for me. And what does Ebay do?  Why is it every change they make makes my life more difficult?  Why are they so out of touch?  I don't see anything beneficial in the change. Just adds keystrokes to my routine.

I just got off the telephone with an Ebay CSR and even he said they had no idea about the changes until sellers started to call.  What is with Ebay??!!  The announcement says it's supposed to make things easier but I cannot see how.  Now you have to go to separate pages just to look at your sale items and another for your sold items-make no sense at all.  It's bad enough they basically are forcing sellers to enroll in a store (I have the 2nd level store) and want sellers to offer free shipping but now this-come on!!  This is my sole income and I cannot just walk away.  I will adapt as many will but it is just not right.

The title of their announcement says, "New My eBay Features Make Shopping and Selling on eBay Even Easier!"

....make selling on ebay even easier. How? They totally removed the active selling, sold and unsold - but that's supposed to be 'easier' for sellers? Even buyers can't find the stuff they won. Who dreams this stuff up? He's gotta stop eating tacos that late at night.

eBay's Philosophy: ''If it ain't broke, break it!''

Perhaps this is a tactic to confuse sellers so that it's too difficult to get a good overall picture of our sales. They don't want sellers to actually SEE in black-and-white how bad things really are. Instead of spending time and effort to IMPROVE the situation, they'd rather contort themselves to simply try and HIDE and DISGUISE the situation.

Ahhh, but the cynical side of me believes that this is just one more thing in a series of ongoing events that are designed to make it more and more difficult for the small sellers to function on eBay.

Clearly they don't have the bulls (where u=a) to simply ''fire'' all the small sellers and purge them all at once, but their actions leave little doubt in anyone's mind that that is their ultimate goal.

I swear, it's like they pay people over at ebay to sit around and try and figure out how they can piss off sellers.

Can't these people just leave things the hell alone? When the hell is the Donahoe error(era) going to end? Enough already!

I don't know if this will help anyone, but I use ordinary web-browser ''bookmarks'' so that I can easily access my most often used eBay pages.

Many of the changes that eBay makes seem to be counter intuitive, especially if it takes *more* clicks to get to a specific page. But when I have a set of organized bookmarks, I can get where I need to be with just one click.

The same holds true for some of the *rarely* accessed pages, such as the ''blocked bidder list'' etc. It was so rare that ever needed to go there, but when I did, it was a nightmare trying to figure out how I found it in the first place.

I have two groups of eBay bookmarks in folders called ''Often Used'' and ''Seldom Used''. I can't remember the last time I actually needed to navigate somewhere using eBay's confusing menu system.

It may not be an idea that works for everyone, but it works for me just fine---so give it a try and see what happens.

I don't wish to appear paranoid, but I tend to agree with Anonymous Annie about ebays ulterior motive.
Even if there is no truth in the rumour about the elimination of the small sellers, the summary page changes makes daily operations more difficult than they need to be. This change is as unfair as the removing the ability of sellers to leave negative feedback for bad buyers. It's only fair for sellers to warn others about unscrupulous buyers. This was Ebays original concept! Fairness to ALL!!

Another change directed by managers who neither buy or sell on the site they mandate changes for.

eBay does not inform buyers of changes.

eBay does not inform sellers of changes in the timing promised by their CEO.

And now, it appears that they do not even bother to notify Customer Service of changes.

The the level of incompetence keeps dropping lower and lower, and nobody in San Jose seems to notice, care or even want to take action to rectify the issues this management team creates.

No wonder so many sellers would rather close their store, cancel their listings and give up on eBay as a marketplace. After all, they are only following the example set by those that run the company.

We do a significant amount of selling on eBay, and these new changes make using the site less convenient for us-- and most other buyers and sellers, it seems.

It looks like the old format has been returned with the summary page showing inventory and sold items but who knows how long it will last.

Let me preface the following by saying that I do Tech Support, Quality Assurance and testing for a living (for another company), and have been a responder in the Answer Center for years.

That said, I cannot fathom what eBay was thinking in the latest coding revisions to the My eBay page. While their record for soliciting and acting on recommendations in the past has ranged from spotty to nonexistent, this latest overhaul arrived with absolutely no notice whatsoever as far as I know, and appears to have been planned and coded by people who do not actually use the site for buying and selling.

To cite just one glaring example, I can no longer monitor both watched items (to buy) and selling on the same page. This is so screamingly fundamental a requirement that it should go without saying, but in order to get a quick update on both items I am selling and those I am considering to buy, I must now slog through two completely-different screens, for no apparent reason other than that someone could not figure out how to code the two options on the same page.

Needless to say, there is also no productive means of dialogue between users and eBay systems people that would allow any improvements to occur. There is no indication about what problem(s) are supposed to be solved by this redesign. To add insult to injury, their announcement claims that this revision makes ''SELLING ON EBAY EVEN EASIER'' but not explain how, except to note that the modules for Active selling items (among others) have been removed from the Summary page. This does not make selling easier, but they have not noticed that, nor is there any way to inform them of that.

To see this level of incompetence and lack of accountability from a multimillion (multibillion?) dollar company whose sole existence depends on its Internet functionality simply boggles the mind.

Every time eBay makes a change for the "benefit of the seller" or to make it "easier" you can be sure it is either going to cost sellers more or make it harder for us to use eBay. This new format and the seller rate increase coming next month will have me using eBay less, craigslist more and looking for other eBay alternatives. eBay your destroying yourself. Keep up the great work!!

TOTALLY STUPID.  I had an extra half-hour to call the Powerseller support line this morning and royally tear the rep a new one over this IDIOTIC idea.  Of course, she was in the Philippines (at least she didn't lie and say she was in San Jose).  At first she had no idea what I was talking about.  She thought that I was trying to say that someone had accessed my page and changed my settings.  I told her, indeed, someone HAD done that . . . to everyone.  I had to explain to her that the SUMMARY was no longer a summary of ANYTHING.  There was NOTHING there . . . other than a blurb that basically said "for your Summary, go somewhere else".  I asked her what a "Summary" meant.  She didn't seem to know.  I walked her through it on her own page, explaining that I had taken time to set my "Summary" page up exactly the way I/ME wanted it . . . not the way some wonk in wherever wanted it.  She said she'd pass my complaint on to management.  Maybe she did, because, now it seems to be back to the way I had it yesterday.  Really, it is unfreekingbelievable.  I guess somebody just felt like they weren't earning their paycheck so they gave themselves some busywork . . . and pi$$ed off about a million people in the process.  Great.  Keep it up, idiots.

I guess I'm starting to expect nothing but weirdness from Ebay.  When I went to my summary page I couldn't find the darn thing...finally found it hidden in the left column.  Ebay...again breaking something that didn't need fixing....
