eBay Adds Facebook Like Buttons to Listings

By: Ina Steiner

eBay is adding Facebook Like buttons to the top of listings so users can share specific eBay items on the social networking site, and the buttons are already beginning to appear in some categories.

eBay told attendees of its eBay OnLocation event in Las Vegas this week, "We're actively working on putting more "Like" button on the site" and wrote, "Social media was initially a communication channel, but it's moving towards a focus on commerce."

eBay had first added Facebook and Twitter share buttons to listing pages in October 2009, but as I wrote last August, they are practically hidden behind a pull-down menu labeled "Share" located right next to the "Print" and "Report item" links.

Now, Facebook Like buttons appear at the top of the page, directly under the listing title. As of this writing, the buttons do not appear in all categories, but are found in the Postcards category (thanks to a longtime AuctionBytes reader for the tip!).

This graphic shows what appears on my Facebook wall after "liking" an eBay listing - so my Facebook friends can see that I've liked the item and can click through to look at the item for themselves if they choose.

But beware of how you use social networking on eBay!

eBay tweeted from the event, "Smart social media strategy: put a link to your facebook page in your listings." However, this violates eBay's own linking policy. On the policy page under "Other Links," it specifically states under the links not allowed: "Links to social networking websites, such as Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter."

Just checked my listings.  Nothing in eBay Motors or Jewelry yet.  I hope they get them all working by September, this would be helpful for people buying Christmas gifts for their friends and family.

Better late than never. I'm happy to see this, and surprised that they're not charging extra for it.

Sellers keep assimilating to an ever changing policy.

Parable:.. Culpability is slowly being transferred. The net is slowly changing. They are addressing culpability on every front of the internet, Business's included.

Think of it as a game of Chess between you and eBay.

A game of chess is won by planning several moves ahead.

Remember that.

eBay tweeted from the event, "Smart social media strategy: put a link to your facebook page in your listings." However, this violates eBay's own linking policy. On the policy page under "Other Links," it specifically states under the links not allowed: "Links to social networking websites, such as Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter."

Another contradictory policy?? No surprise.

Can't wait for eBay to begin suspending small sellers for 1) taking the advice they tweeted, and 2) violating eBay policy for having linked listings to unapproved web sites.

LET THE SUSPENSIONS BEGIN!!!

Why did the seller need to say Stanley twice? Flower would have been a good word to add.

I'm not happy about seeing more eBay junk on Facebook.

It harshes my Farmville mellow.

Most sellers who have Facebook pages know that you can just put the URL on FB and the same thing appears.  I do it with anything I list on Ebay.

Not a bad idea at all . . . but this is another example of why I laugh when some eBay know-it-all cheerleader asks (smugly) "have you actually read the policy?"

Hah!  Why bother when the people who write the rules don't even read the rules?

Etsy has done the same thing.

In a flash I have no doubt all the selling sites will have this function.

You should add - this week's policy or last week's policy? ;-)

Between this and mobile, the site has no choice but to return to its former glory.

What will they do when trendy facebook falls flat?

Perhaps they'll sponsor a section in the newest version of the AOL dial-up software. Or, maybe, they'll buy an ad or two on Prodigy.

OH.
MY.
GOD.

eBay has become an absolute three ring circus of incompetence!!

At first glance, I thought that this was a positive improvement (and it is, really) but it illustrates with a very clear example of how INCOMPETENT and INCONSISTENT the clowns at eBay really are!!

Whether it's Griff suggesting to sellers that they do things that violate eBay policies... or eBay violating their OWN policies... it's very obvious that this is a dysfunctional organisation that doesn't have a CLUE what's going on.

Rules and policies change so often that even the people ''in charge'' don't know what's allowed and what's permitted (let alone the tele-workers who offer phone support from the comfort of their living room!!)

It's just astounding to me that this company hasn't collapsed under the weight of it's own incompetence. It's a house of cards that's just waiting for someone to sneeze... then it all comes tumbling down.

I'm sick of it! Absolutely fed up with the whole lot of them! They're a vile and disgusting group of evil trolls that feed their greed at the expense of the small honest independent sellers... these are the folks who MADE EBAY! And sadly, these are also the people who can least afford the abuse that's being heaped upon them by the monsters at the top.

Why must we wallow in their cesspool? It's time to move on!

Yes I remember Myspace, I never used it.

But then Facebook came along and was much bigger and more popular.

Do you think Facebook will disappear or will another site take over ?

I think it is hear to stay.

I think what was meant by "remember MYSPACE" is the fact that MYSPACE was the end-all-be-all-monopoly of social networking....then along game FACEBOOK, and took MYSPACE right off the map.

I think we are all waiting for a MYSPACE/FACEBOOK moment to happen to Ebay.  The day when folks will go "remember Ebay"?...then Ebay will be beg'n for sellers/buyers to return!

My money is on some sort of auction/ecommerce venue via Facebook.  Who know...
