eBay Adds Facebook Like Buttons to Listings
By: Ina Steiner
eBay is adding Facebook Like buttons to the top of listings so users can share specific eBay items on the social networking site, and the buttons are already beginning to appear in some categories.
eBay told attendees of its eBay OnLocation event in Las Vegas this week, "We're actively working on putting more "Like" button on the site" and wrote, "Social media was initially a communication channel, but it's moving towards a focus on commerce."
eBay had first added Facebook and Twitter share buttons to listing pages in October 2009, but as I wrote last August, they are practically hidden behind a pull-down menu labeled "Share" located right next to the "Print" and "Report item" links.
Now, Facebook Like buttons appear at the top of the page, directly under the listing title. As of this writing, the buttons do not appear in all categories, but are found in the Postcards category (thanks to a longtime AuctionBytes reader for the tip!).
This graphic shows what appears on my Facebook wall after "liking" an eBay listing - so my Facebook friends can see that I've liked the item and can click through to look at the item for themselves if they choose.
But beware of how you use social networking on eBay!
eBay tweeted from the event, "Smart social media strategy: put a link to your facebook page in your listings." However, this violates eBay's own linking policy. On the policy page under "Other Links," it specifically states under the links not allowed: "Links to social networking websites, such as Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter."
