Will eBay Match Amazon's Group-Deal Success?

By: Ina Steiner

Sponsored Link

In January, group-buying service Living Social offered $20 Amazon vouchers for $10. According to PC Magazine, Living Social ended up selling 1.38 million of the vouchers. The reason for the success was clear - the company was, in effect, giving away $10.

eBay is currently running a similar promotion through Groupon - pay $7 for a voucher good for a $15 eBay purchase. (Be sure and read the fine print!) The ad says limited quantity available, it would be interesting to know if eBay could come close to matching Amazon's offer.

Not sure what Groupon is? Greg Holden interviewed Groupon.com CEO Andrew Mason last year. eBay entered into a partnership with Groupon in October.

Groupon's future looks bleak. Once eBay execs get their grubby little paws on it, they'll surely turn it into shite.

The ''limited quantities'' disclaimer has the same ring to is as those obnoxious auto dealer ads with shouting-announcers and digitally compressed ''fast-talk'' (audio fine-print) at the end of the ad.

You know... the ones where they HYPE UP a VERY LOW PRICED and highly desirable auto... and they give the impression that EVERY car on their lot is similarly priced, but in reality, there's only ONE car being offered for that low price. Oh, and by the way, it sold already... but the ads still continue even though the token item isn't available any more.

So, I expect that eBay will have about 100 of these discounted cards (just enough to pass the legal sniff-test) but even after they're gone, their ads and delayed press releases will still be hitting the web, airwaves and print outlets.

The games they play are OBSCENE and totally beneath contempt.

Even I've been burned on eBay to make me fearful of high dollar item purchases. With amazon, I have such a great trust with them I'm not scared to spend on a big screen tv. I would never do that on eBay le alone a $100 item.

That being said, I think eBay will only sell a low number even with the lower price. If eBay advertises this on their home page... That might be a different result.

Too funny! :oD

Perhaps they're afraid someone may file a bogus ''item not received'' or ''it's a counterfeit'' claim.

This reminds me of ebay's new  business model that they're trying get the sellers to adopt. '' I lose on every piece but I make it up in volume.''

They don't take PayPal, another shining example of eBay management's inability to remember the 5 P's.

Proper Planning Prevents Pi$$ Poor Performance.

Ebay can't match or beat anything Amazon does. Buyers and sellers both like Amazon but only some buyers and a small % of sellers still like ebay. Until this changes; Ebay will fall further and further behind regardless of anything Ebay does.   The only edge Ebay still has is in used items and used collectibles, but their idiot CEO has done his best to destroy the only thing Ebay still leads in.  Groupon is not the answer; a revival of the old Ebay with lower fees; in combo with some competing Amazon type products; is the answer

Ah, eBay...well, I don't buy anything on eBay despite being a Power Seller there. Why? For one, there isn't that much that I really desire and, but perhaps most importantly, even though I realize that there must be other sellers like me who are trustworthy, reliable, and honest, I still feel like buying on eBay is a crapshoot that isn't worth my time.

Groupon? I get those damn things every morning but I wouldn't generally buy anything on eBay on a dare. Very sad, I know.

I just can't get over how pathetic eBay continually strives in mimicking ebay.  They just don't get it.

I haven't used ebay since I closed my account back in 2008.  My adult kids only use it to buy $.01 items that have minimal shipping and that's it!

Interesting to note that only my eBay ''posting-id''* has received any email announcements about this. My other two eBay id's (for selling and for buying) have received NO email announcements.

Perhaps it's being targeted ONLY to those IDs that have never bought anything on eBay.

*a ''posting-id'' is an eBay account that people create SOLELY for the purpose of freely participating on eBay forums (to comment or ask questions) without revealing one's true identity and risking retaliation from eBay or oddballs who troll the forums.

According to Google news, there are now three law firms investigating GSI. Law firms let alone three law firms normally don't "investigate" aquisitions unless something smells.

In this case, I think this acquisition positively reaks.

I've seen headlines for more than 5 apparent investigations now. Is that normal?
Maybe someone should investigate how it seems that GSI and it's tentacles, along with the ebay tool-trolls, came to the feedback rescue for ToysRus when they launched on ebay.

If that wasn't some clear cut fraud I don't know what is?

@@Ming

That ebay removes negative feedback and "adjusts" DSRs for their select sellers, how did GSI rescue TRU's feedback?

Just curious as to your take on this.

Ming, If you were following along from the get-go, many of the first TRus feedback leavers were persons reputed to be ebay/lieworld paid posters or pumpers, or with companies which are listed as GSI members etc. (Feedbacks which were left before the buyers could have possibly received the goods BTW )

Once you start following along you'll see it's an ever increasing radius of cheating and fake Id's, shilling etc. There were several threads posted about it on ebay forums which were removed. Feedback/DSR score was manipulated to say the least. You can go back and read the original auctionbytes ToysRus post here,

This
is perhaps a bigger scandal than the padded listings affair. I'm still wondering why none of the ebay watchdogs, critics or shill bidding experts etc exposed that in any meaningful way.

This is not a serious purchase; these white collar criminals have probably organized this deal so that they can all very soon retire, from the mess they have created at eBay, on their share of the fat (secret) commissions / finders fees / success fees that this deal will undoubtedly produce.

Check out slickdeals.net - people literally bought dozens, in some cases hundreds. Totally scammed the system. Most were NOT regular ebay buyers. Of course, Groupon & ebay could have shut it down early, but didn't. Hmmm....
