eBay Sellers Report Gallery Photos Fail to Display

By: Ina Steiner

Sponsored Link

Online sellers are reporting problems with gallery photos in their eBay listings. A reader said he had been experiencing issues since February 10. "Basically my gallery picture is not getting imported correctly when uploading to eBay," he said, "and it's causing a few hundred of my listings to get launched without a gallery picture when users are searching."

The seller said his account manager said eBay has been trying to fix it for some time and was told it was happening with sellers who use third-party listing software.

Sellers discussing the glitch on eBay's discussion boards, including this one, report it is happening to their listings intermittently.

I have a few listings that continuously drop the uploaded images once their 30-day cycle has ended.

When re-lisiting, I reload the images and they are dropped again after the 30-day cycle.

It is not all the images in the listing, just the latter ones that are dropped (example: the first 7 remain, but the latter 5 are dropped).

The pattern remains the same.

If your listing picked up a system glitch bug attribute, it will remain there until eBay corrects the sight problem (which they will not post on the system announcement board).

I am lucky that it is always the same handful. That is, those that have yet to sell.

Another day, another glitch, and another case of eBay failing to notify it's sellers there is a problem.

What amazes me is how eBay wants to manage and reduce payroll costs yet they consistently fail to post known system glitches on the announcement board which exists for that very purpose.

If they posted all their glitches, it would reduce the number of calls for assistance and enable eBay to better manage call volume and payroll costs.

While they may not want to publicly air their dirty laundry with announcements about how many system glitches they are experiencing, their failure to post announcements on the board designated for the purpose indicates that eBay has little or no regard for their sellers.

It also increases call volume as sellers confounded by the many system glitches contact eBay for assistance.

If management was clearly motivated to act in the best interests of their buyers and sellers, they would consistently post any and all system glitches on that board.

Once buyers and sellers overcome the shock of eBay's new found transparency, and find they are able to go to the announcement board before contacting eBay. eBay would find their call volume significantly reduced, and they could realize significant savings.

Then again, the simple and efficient solution always manages to escape the brilliant MBA's running eBay, so the present system with zero transparency will no doubt remain in place.

And does anyone really think ebay gives a damn?

It's a prelude to set the table for yet another photo $ervice we're get gouged for.

From one of my favorites websites, www.glassdoor.com, and these comments are illustrative of ebay's commitment to mediocrity or worse and the quality of some of the people they hire:

"The ebay veterans occupy some key positions and dont necessarily have vision, nor technical capabilties."

"Mysterious technology choices and lack of direction; everything is built and run on decades-old technology, then management comments openly about competitors having much larger technology budgets."

An ebay emplpyee's assessment of the Pros of working for ebay:
good salary. could be better.. soda is free.. food is not free. coffee is free but not as high quality as what's provided at google."

"PayPal system is fragile and architectually flawed."

"Senior mgmt not tech savvy."

"--Knowledgeable and tenured people to learn from.
--Nice working facilities.
--Free soda, tea, coffee, hot cocoa and bagels once a week
--Occasional off-sites
--Holiday parties that are catered
--The company is strongly tied into the to the community with events and charities"

Also buried among comments is an opinion that members of certain religion may be receiving preferential treatment when it comes to hiring. Hmmmm. Utah.

One predominant theme throughout employee ebay evaluations is that ebay management lacks focus and and is far too political.

So it's no mystery why ebay is in the sorry, chaotic mess that it's in.

Ming Beat me! Yes with Ebay's new seller services coming online & their new plan to rank listings by pictures, is anyone surprised here? They will certainly rank people with photos hosted on Ebay higher, since 3P hosted images are not showing up! Just another way to grab a few more of your sheckels! I think Fong Donafu must be a direct descendant of the money lenders Jesus ran off from the temples!

Oh, those eBay policy-makers and programmers are a clever bunch, aren't they?!

What better way to discourage people from using 3rd-party programs than to make CERTAIN that 3rd-party programs don't work??!

It is relatively simple to make ''unannounced'' changes... or to implement changes WITHOUT testing them (as eBay often does) thereby making 3rd-party software incompatible and inoperable.

Eventually people will ''realize'' that those clumsy 3rd-party programmers are just ''too dumb'' to make their software work right. And as a result, eBay sellers will come-home-to-mama and use ONLY ''genuine'' eBay authorized apps.

It's just one f-up after another with eBay, isn't it? I seems clear to me that they'll never change. This is how it's going to be. Forever. They just don't care. Completely unprofessional 1-star service, 1-star competence, 1-star programming skills, 1-star satisfaction rating.

(-) NEGATIVE! DO NOT SELL ON THIS VENUE. LIES AND CHEATS. DOES NOT DELIVER. SCAM ARTIST!

be happy that you dont have to pay the 59c gallery fee as we still do in Australia...a massive rip off (about 2 years after the fee was ditched in the US and UK?????)

eBay is a sad joke

Annie, I remember when they bought out Blackthorne, and the owner was all over the forums promising the program would still work, you didn't have to pay a monthly fee to stay current, no changes planned, BLAH BLAH, of course within a month Ebay had changed all the categories, and a couple functions & Blackthorne no longer worked right anymore. What a nest of vipers ebay has become.

This has been happening quite a while and it has nothing to do with listing software. I list everything manually and it happens to me on a regular basis

This happened to us and we use Turbolister to list.

If you go into your listings and bulk edit them, saving them without any changes, the picture reappear.

Why are ebay sellers held to higher performance standards than EBAY ITSELF?

Where is the accountability?

Poster Curious Curios asks ''Where is the accountability?''

For companies like eBay,inc., the court system.

That is, if one feels that it is in their best interest to protect their business.

If not, then not.

This is an ongoing problem, and ebay blames the hosts, the hosts blame ebay.  Every time you relist an item, the gallery disappears...  I have spent hours trying to fix it, only to have another whole set go down.  Fustration is reaching top level.  For what we pay, ebay should be able to figure out the glich and resolve it!

Debby, if it affected the Doggy Diamond sellers, Ebay would fix it. Everyone else can pound sand.

This is a new problem from those of you who have been experiencing this on and off for many months. Something has happened in the last 10 days where at least for us.....80% of our galleries aren't working all of a sudden. The only way to fix this is to manually go into each one and copy the picture from the host server to Ebay's server. We've never had 1 issue with this until 10 days ago.....so it's different and a bigger issue.

I've run into this this problem about 3 months ago. 1st I bought the eBay line that my image hosting service (smugmug.com) was having problems.

Naturally, after 35 years as a systems programmer (initially in a white lab coat) I've developed a certain troubleshooting methodology & discovered that eBay's excuse is full of road apples!

It doesn't matter if the image is large or small, uploading it with 100 or 10 other listings - it is somewhat random for the lister.

For eBay, I suspect the problem is with their network and timing issues when they get busy. Their loading algorithm probably has a timer which rejects the image after so long. The easy way is to increase the time before rejection or just requeue the listing request.

Then again, I've offered my services to eBay over the last 15 years but have not been contacted.

Peh.  Listing software problem myass.

I list from the SYI form and host my own photos.  I randomly lose  gallery pictures and have to go in to revise and re-load it (the 'Fix' button has NEVER worked).
Off the top of my head, probably one out of eight gallery images fail.

It's just stupid.

I more or less solved the problem of disappearing gallery photos which has been going on for years to one degree or another by uploading the first photo only to ebay and then inserting all the photos in the item description.

I seldom lose photos using this strategy although it's a big PITA.

A poorly trained hacker could destroy ebay's entire marketplace platform in five minutes. It's that bad.

Maybe if ebay would bring all the tech jobs they outsourced to Asia back to this country things might work better.

I also suspect the new layer of photo management they just hired from Microsoft is probably trying out a version of disruptive innovation  with our photos.

a bit off subject but i cannot seem to find info anywhere.

been on ebay for 8 years now.  i use blackthorne.  i didnt notice in novembers invoice but when decembers invoice came in a three times what it should be (our fees went from around $1500-$2000/month to over $5000) i began calling ebay to find out what was going on.

i first called on january 10 and they have passed me from person to person and will not address the issue.

i asked if i should take listings down but the first person said ''no'' he would take care of it.  of course he did not and the fees kept rising.  the nov & dec invoices were paid but i turned off my card when i saw januarys fees top $4000.  i started taking down items and now we are no longer selling.

they wont call me back, wont email.  (oh actually they are consistent with their ''you are now past due on fees'' emails - so there's that)  i call every week wondering whats going on and i get ''its always so and so's department.  they will look into it.''  they even told me the first guy i spoke to was fired?

so has anyone heard of blackthorne having issues with fees?  i think it gave me an upgrade i dont use.  but cannot be sure.

anyone with any insight would be very helpful.

thanks.
