eBay Glitch - Sellers Unable to Print Postage Labels

By: Ina Steiner

eBay sellers are yet again having problems printing postage labels for their orders. On Monday, sellers received a message that eBay was conducting maintenance when trying to print labels. On Friday, things got worse, according to sellers posting on this discussion board thread.

One EcommerceBytes reader wrote that as of 10AM EST, eBay shipping confirmed the following shipping issues:

1) Random Duplicate label printing/charging (check your paypal account)
2) No Printing of shipping labels at all in some cases
3) Tracking # emails not being sent
4) When labels are printed they don't change from unshipped to shipped (manual status change required)

"Any or all of these issues are occurring and have been so for the last week," he wrote. "eBay claims they are aware and that sellers should call in and relay individual item numbers so that tech support can look into it."

Sellers on the discussion board also reported problems with being charged for labels that did not print: "I just checked my PayPal transactions and noticed that I was charged three times for the same $17.00 international shipping label which has still failed to print for me once."

eBay sellers are pressured by the company to turn around orders quickly for fast delivery, but lately its postage-printing system has been experiencing glitches. It couldn't happen at a worse time as sellers try to push out their holiday orders in time for Christmas delivery.

There's nothing on eBay's Systems Announcement board, but you can also indicate if you're having problems by posting on the Ecommerce EKG board.

Let's face it, eBay and it's most ugly daughter, PreyPal, are the two most unprofessional, unscrupulous, incompetent and "clunky" commercial entities on the planet. Then, what else could we expect from the Pain from Bain, the "eBafia Don", and his various criminal organisations?

I used Stamps.com instead. It's good to have an alternate service available.

Stamps.com for me, sweetie! The eBay postage/label system is clunky, unreliable, and RISKY!!

Lost funds (and having to jump through multiple hoops to get a refund, and then wait for DAYS) and delayed shipments (with frustrated customers who'd take it out on ME) are just too much to bear.

We have never printed postage from ebay. During a recent call from ebay ''seller development'', the rep was trying to convince us to use the ebay shipping process claiming we would get tracking automatically updated.

I told her we already have a postage solution with stamps.com and that we've had it since 2000. She pressed on trying to convince us to switch over to ebay. At this point, I told her we didn't believe in using unneeded ebay services because it would be subject to all the typical ebay glitches and over charges and we just weren't up for any more ebay abuse, so no thank you!

We also have an Endicia account. Why have two? Because when one account is overloaded, bogged down or crashes, we switch to the other to complete our shipping.

Since we do all the packing and shipping at the end of the day, we don't have time to deal with a delay so we have the back up.

As far as giving ebay more money, we just avoid that as much as possible and only use the services we absolutely need which is listing on the site, a basic ebay store and taking paypal.

Our website sales are ever increasing and catching up to ebay sales. It used to be 100% ebay, then 10% website, 90% ebay but now its closer to 60% ebay and 40% website and closing. The longer we have the site, the higher the percentage.

I strongly recommend: Anyone still using ebay postage to consider spending 15.99/mo to get an ''off ebay'' postage printing option as it's best not be dependent on ebay.

Use ebay for the absolute minimum and build your online presence elsewhere as much as possible.

The old adage still holds true; don't place all your eggs in one basket.

It is puzzling why anyone would want to use Ebay for printing labels.

Gotta be that these people like being hit in the head with a baseball bat everyday.

Cause its cheaper than anywhere else with their commercial discount and it takes a whole 5 seconds to do each label.....nice if you are a volume seller

''Cause its cheaper than anywhere else with their commercial discount''

That's not entirely true. Not everyone qualifies for the ''discount''. And even with the discount, one must also consider its overall VALUE.

Frankly, I see no VALUE in using eBay's postage labels when compared to other options that are infinitely more reliable.

Even if eBay was offering half-priced postage, it wouldn't be a good value when one consider the fact that they never know for sure if they'll actually be able to print the postage labels.

Delays, overcharges, trying to get refunded, MULTIPLE overcharges that drain someone's checking or paypal account... leaving sellers with the risk of being overdrawn or facing NSF charges?! Unhappy customers who receive their items later than they were told! Unhappy customers who retaliate by dinging DSR scores!

It's difficult for me to imagine that anyone would look at the WHOLE picture and think of it as being something of actual VALUE.

This is just another shining example (and a repetitive ongoing on at that!) which clearly illustrates eBay's UTTER and COMPLETE INCOMPETENCE when it comes to programming and TESTING their programming. It also shines a bright and glaring light on their inability to promptly FIX errors and their unwillingness to FESS UP to their errors.

Even Joanna Hoff has nothing to say. I guess this one is too difficult for a skilled spokeswoman like she to be able to put a positive spin on it.

"

I saved a few hundred dollars using ebay shipping just since I started using it a few months ago...its free and the discount right now to powersellers and top rated sellers is better than stamps.com, paypal shipping or any other shipping service.

I can blow through 20-30 things to pack quickly and easily

I have never been overcharged, delays? dont understand that.

I have had lots so ebay issues over the years but ebay shipping is not one of them

So if you use another shipping service that is not ebay shipping then this wont happen?

Ebay will give dates no matter what shipping service you use.

Hey Annie, when you use the term "skilled spokeswoman" to describe Joanna Hoff you jest, of course. I've never believed, nor felt consoled by, anything that has ever emanated from Hoff's pathetic spinning wheel.

Scott asks: ''So if you use another shipping service that is not ebay shipping then this wont happen?''

Frankly, YES! ~ The shipping/postage label that I'm able to print IMMEDIATELY with Stamps.com allows me to mail the customer's item on the SAME DAY. In contrast, the shipping/postage label that I'm UNABLE to print with eBay means that I'll have to wait until the next day to mail their item.

I think you're actually smarter than your question would have us believe. The issue is NOT about different shipping services... it's about a seller's ability to promptly get an item in the post.

Philip observes: ''...you jest, of course''

Indeed I do! When this thing first started, Ina asked her a very straightforward question and she REFUSED to give a plain answer. The question was simple... her answer was convoluted, and STILL never addressed the concerns that Ina mentioned.

Ms. Hoff has no shame (obviously a job requirement) but even with her verbal gymnastic skills, it's clear that THIS issue is something that even SHE can't dance around and put a good spin on it.

Scott writes: ''its free and the discount right now to powersellers and top rated sellers''

I see that you NOW make the distinction, but earlier your remarks would lead people to believe that *everyone* saves.

Not everyone is a Powerseller, and the ones who aren't Powersellers are probably the ones who could benefit the most from discounted postage. Even non-Powersellers benefit from discounts when using an alternate service such as stamps.com or endicia.

I think you knew that already.

I also think you know that the discounts being offered now are ''limited time'' and promotional only. Those who happen to qualify now, won't qualify later when the promotion ends.

Wow. That's unbelievable. Literally.

Another moment of brilliance from the geniuses at eBay corporation.

3 weeks ago, eBay attempted to discontinue PayPal shipping and forcing everyone to print through eBay. eBay sellers were screaming, and sellers who accepted PayPal on sites other than eBay were screaming even louder.

To their credit, eBay listened to the noise and restored PayPal's shipping extension, at least for now. There was no announcement before PayPal shipping was shut down just as there was no announcement after they restored it.

What many predicted has came true, eBay's clunky, error prone, glitch filled code could not handle the traffic and took everything down... again.

If eBay management had gotten their way, and PayPal shipping remained closed, all sellers who accept PayPal on or off eBay would be negatively impacted by eBay's incompetence, and would have been left with no alternative just as many predicted.

The level of stupidity and self defeatism at eBay is exceeded only by the arrogance displayed with their ill conceived disruptions.

Nice way to run a business during the holidays.

The MBA's are so far removed from reality that they can not see how badly they are screwing their own business with their condescending tone, and unrealistic business views.

One minute they force all shipping through ebay without as much as an announcement, the next, they rollback because they suddenly realize sellers have alternatives and could just as easily take their shipping business elsewhere and there would be nothing eBay could do to stop them from doing so.

Somebody finally realized it made more sense to disrupt the disruptive innovation and leave well enough alone, and I bet it did not take an MBA to figure that one out.

How do you print a labels in 5 seconds when you get the ''conducting maintenance'' page? Have you found a workaround?

@pace306 good post
''We are currently performing maintenance, Please try again after Dec. 9, 2011 11:30:00 AM''

Telling customers to try back after 11:30 AM is not maintenance, who the hell goes offline to do maintenance until 11:30 in the morning on a Friday? More like a serious unexpeted problem taking the site down. The page should say

Sorry to go off topic, but can anyone confirm this type of thing happening?

"I was bidding on vouchers for tickets in the ticket catagory. after hitting the final bid button an extra alert button about fakes came up. im not entirely sure exactly what it said as i was into the last seconds of the auction after id hit the extra button the auction had closed."
