eBay Sellers Can't Print Shipping Labels on Busy Shopping Day

All those packages, and no way to ship!

Sellers are reporting problems printing shipping labels through eBay and PayPal today, one of the busiest online shopping days of the year. Several sellers reported seeing the following message: "We are currently performing maintenance, Please try again after Dec. 5, 2011 02:00:00 PM MST."

An EcommerceBytes reader wrote that they first tried printing shipping labels this morning at 11:50 AM EST, when she got a message stating, "We're having a problem printing your label." She tried again at 3:02 PM EST and received the above message about site maintenance.

On the eBay boards, one seller said they were unable to print on the USPS website, but another said they could print on Stamps.com. "I have never seen this many problems printing labels in my 8 years and 10,000 sales on here," one seller wrote today.

Indeed, sellers have been using the Ecommerce EKG board lately to report problems trying to print shipping labels through eBay/PayPal. On November 28, sellers reported intermittent problems getting PayPal to connect to the postal service, and on December 3, a trio of sellers said they could not print international shipping labels through eBay.

Let us know if you're having any problems printing shipping labels today and if any service is working for you now.

Update: Someone provided a screenshot of the eBay message they received when trying to print a shipping label on eBay.

Is eBay going to tell buyers that purchased items are going to take an extra day to get to them on behalf of the sellers who work very hard all day to package items & get to the post office before it closes, then can not print labels??

This has been a rough year for eBay labels.  Just build the label system big & powerful enough to NOT fail!  thank you for letting me vent....

Oh good grief! Again? Yet another reason not to trust eBay... and yet another example of how the SELLER pays the consequences when EBAY flicks up.

I'll stick with Stamps.com to print my shipping labels. Sure, I have to manually cut-and-paste the DC number into eBay... but it's pretty routine, and it only takes an extra 10 seconds.

The extra effort required to do this is effort well-spent considering the alternative!! In this case, the alternative means having to depend on eBay's clunky and unreliable system... which causes shipping delays... which creates UNHAPPY BUYERS... who won't hesitate to show their dissatisfaction in DSR scores.

Nice work, eBay! Way to go, jerks!

Every ''improvement'' they implement causes a domino-effect of other problems. It appears that these changes in code have not been tested, and because the REST of the eBay code is so fragile (held together with chicken-wire and duct-tape) it certainly makes sense that whenever new code is buggy, it ends up bringing down an entire system for HOURS!!

Other companies FIRE their programmers who are incompetent... eBay hires them and puts them on the front line of ''mission critical'' modules (such as being able to print labels/postage).

What idiots!

Please note that the Ebay system announcement board only showed on November 30, 2011 for Dec 1-2.. Nothing about the so called maintenance.. Its fustrating when you use the Postal Regional boxes which isn't available on Paypal and I don't get my commercial discount for powersellers with PayPal.. Oh well

What else is new.

As a former IT professional with over (now) 45 years experience (Jehosaphat!), I have railed against the poor programming performance of Turbo-Lister and eBay in general.

This company has a VERY POOR management structure for instituting changes and updates.

The upshot is - it is the only game in town.

Is eBay pulling programmers out of the shallow gene pool of San Jose given the allure of Google and others in the area?

My take is that it is a middle management problem. Middle managers should have the cajones to go both ways; convince upper management that this is in the company's best interest, and to put the foot down on the neck of the programmers that this is a better way of doing things.

Been there - done that. Too tired now except to complain. $150/hr consulting fee doesn't buy much nowdays.

I don't use ebay labels.  I ship mostly media mail so the savings is only about 10 or 20 cents and the delivery confirmation is discounted a lot for priority but hardly at all for media mail.  The labels are large and use a ton of ink; not to sound cheap, but I think whatever I'd save on the labels would be lost on print cartridges.  As for the outtage; these things happen. Seems silly to blame Ebay for every single thing that goes wrong. I sell less because store fees are a rip off, not because of the occasional tech glitch

Aren't most ebafia programmers located in India?

Ebafia is well known for knowingly providing defective services because they're too damn cheap to code correctly the first or even the second time around.

Meg Whitman was infamous for taking things live that were overflowing with coding errors, only fixing those errors that cost ebay money, and then moving on the next incompetently programmed new things.

Few other ecommerce sites have the depth and breadth of "glitches" that ebay does, and that alone tells the tale.

There is NO excuse.

Label printing is fairly simple stuff but:
Problems = complaints = excuse needed to hold your money = Money in eBays pocket

Generate problems to profit off them, it's the eBay way.

I feel like I was forced to change from using Paypal USPS labels to Ebay, after not being able to print labels on PP for some reason one day. Money was deducted from acct, though. A tech at PP told me that Ebay was eventually going to make it so PP was out of the shipping label end of it and everyone would have to print them using the Ebay site. Since I started using Ebay for labels, I have had sporadic problems. Yesterday was the worse and I kept trying and kept getting the ''sorry we were unable to process your label at this time'' message. Then they finally posted their ''maintenance'' message. Word of advice...check your messages and your Paypal account. I was billed four times for the same package, all with different DC #'s.I hope BozoBay has it fixed by now.

I just called CS over another issue and it said (before I got a CS agent): ''we are aware that some of you cannot print shipping labels. Please print the label at a LATER TIME''.
Now I ask, is this going to work?
Will buyers be UNDERSTANDING?
Will ebay adjust the ''estimated arrival time'' on items that the seller cannot print a label for?
This is NOT GOOD JD, folks need these items FAST this month as many of them are GIFTS!
Geniuses over there at ebay.

Hey guys! eBay is not the only option left on this earth to print shipping labels and it’s a waste of time and effort trying to get your labels printed through eBay only when the site is busy or shows a recurring error. I personally like the quality and services of shippinglabels.com. They have excellent customization wizard where you can add your own text and design shipping labels the way you want. You can check out their site. They have a wide variety of shipping and packaging labels; the delivery is quick and there are no extra charges for customization.
