Can Your October Sales Indicate Holiday Sales Trends?

By: Ina Steiner

For most retailers, the holiday shopping season is the most important time of the year. The Christmas cards and red bows are already appearing in stores as retailers look to start capturing holiday sales before Halloween.

No one knows what the 2011 holiday shopping season will be like this year, but October could give some indication of consumer confidence.

We decided to conduct a survey of online sellers to gauge October sales and want to know if your October sales are higher, lower, or about the same as October 2010. Please take a moment to take the survey (hosted on SurveyMonkey.com).

As always, we will share the aggregated results in a future issue of EcommerceBytes and will let you know if consumers are getting their shopping done early this year, or if procrastinators are winning the day.

Here's a link to the survey, and please feel free to leave your comments below.

My september sales were good - my october sales were almost non-existent.  No traffic.  Hope others did better.

To help sellers target holiday buyers why not ask this question:

Q. Buyers. What internet site will you use to purchase most of your gifts for the holidays.

By far, October was the best of of this year for me.  But it was still 20% lower than last year. Momentum has been building, hopefully for a strong close to this dreary year.

I had 240 sales in October 2010, and 400 sales this October 2011.

In the course of messages several over the month said they were starting their Christmas shopping early.

Curious how this will pan out this year.  I keep hearing it will be a good shopping year but time will tell.  I do think shoppers will be more selective and want to make sure their shopping dollars are used carefully and with more thought and planning behind them.

I wanted to do a quick follow up.

It is usual for me to have traffic that is anywhere from 20 to 30 by this time in the morning, which is almost 7 a.m., 30 being brisk.

I consider my traffic to currently be off the charts at 120.

Have to see if the day holds to such a pace.

400 sales? Traffic off the charts? ''Momentum has been building'' all just words. Without something to back it up such statements carry very little weight since there is no way to separate fact from ebay propaganda.

My October 2011 sales beat out October 2010 by $25.00. We shipped 84 orders this past month. We DO NOT sell on ebay!

September was good year over year but in October we sold less then what we did this time last year, with 50% more listings. eBay had the worst percentage decline over all other sales channels but sales were down across all of our channels last month.

@notbuyingit

Making assumptions is never wise.  Who said anything about ebay?  Haven't been a bayer since 2008.

And I have no need to "prove" anything.  Unless I choose to do so.  You can think what you like.
