eBay to Highlight TRS Listings with Free and Fast Shipping

By: Ina Steiner

Many online retailers create special shipping incentives during the holidays, but on eBay, third-party sellers set their own shipping conditions. As a result, eBay uses various techniques to encourage sellers to offer free shipping - this year, for example, it instituted a new seller fee on shipping and handling charges.

Today eBay announced a new badge that shoppers will see on listings from sellers who offer "Fast 'n Free" shipping. eBay said "Fast 'N Free" is a new way to signal to buyers that a specific item ships free and will likely arrive within 4 business days. For now, eBay will only display the badge on listings from Top Rated Sellers.

eBay will begin testing the eBay Fast 'N Free badge on 30% of traffic starting in late October and plans to ramp up to all traffic for eBay Top-rated Seller listings in mid-November. eBay will consider ramping for all sellers in December 2011.

eBay is not basing the "fast" part of the Fast N Free eligibility on a particular shipping method - instead, it will base it on each seller's past delivery performance in relation to the buyer's location - that means the same listing might display the badge to some buyers but not others, depending on the buyer's zip code.

"The estimated delivery date is calculated using a number of factors including historical seller performance, the proximity of the buyer to the item, the historical performance of the shipping carrier, seasonality, and other factors."

The Badge will appear in the View Item page and throughout the checkout flow. The announcement did not say anything about the badge appearing in search results - at least for now.

The Post Office is disgruntled and the mail is slower than ever.

If that little icon reminds Buyers their item is late, will the DSRs suffer?

Is it me or does it send a scammer message  ''Fast AND FREE!''

Interesting idea. I wonder what effect, if any, this will have. Does it have the risk of setting the buyer's expectations too high? There's always the possibility of running into a customer who doesn't read carefully, and who sees only ''4-days'' and not ''4-business-days.''

In most cases, when an order arrives before 12-noon, I'm able to ship items the same day, and my customer receives their item well inside the 4-business-day timeframe. However, in many of my listings, I offer free shipping with 3-day processing time (just as a buffer, and so that the customer is delighted when their item arrives ''earlier'' than expected.)

I wonder if my listings will qualify for the new badge even though my processing time is stated at 3-days, but my actual delivery time is 2-3 days.

Will eBay's estimates be accurate? I hope eBay has tested it thoroughly enough to be able to eBay to ''evaluate [a seller's] historical performance with a high degree of confidence'' as explained in the FAQ page.

Just spotted something else in the FAQ's

Q: What happens if there's a seasonal storm or natural disaster that affects the item delivery date?

A: eBay customarily asks buyers to be more patient and understanding of the extenuating circumstances for sellers in the affected areas. As always, buyers are encouraged to communicate directly with sellers to work things out.

A very diplomatic response from eBay, but ultimately the seller is at the mercy of the disappointed buyer. It would be nice if there was some automatic protection available to sellers in the event of a crippling storm, a natural disaster, or some other catastrophic event.

Just another piece of trim on the auction page.

With all the banners, badges and crap Fleecebay is putting on pages now its a wonder that any clear thinking buyer could find the buy button.

All that clutter makes for a poor buying experience.

Ebay needs to give out badges to the sellers who continues to sell on the cluttered site.

Sellers are becoming girl and boy scouts. Next thing you know their will be a contest to see who can get the most banners and badges on their pages.

Just another reason to shop at wal mart.

It's just one more hoop for Sellers to jump through, in an area where we don't have full control over the results. No thanks.

I just lost my TRS ''badge'' because of a buyer who demanded a refund, wouldn't send pictures of the ''damage'', filed a claim, received a full refund, kept the item AND then left terrible negative feedback to blow my 100% positive.  All DSR's are 4.9 or 5.0 so it has to be the negative,  Very coincidental that we are at the holiday season...  The new ''badge'' stinks just like all the others.  Very discouraged.

Too much clutter, and I have no reason to believe it will work properly. Leave well enough alone, especially before Christmas.

The fact that Ebay is making this risky and untested change BEFORE Xmas indicates to me the level of desperation they have trying to rescue what portends to be an ''okay'' season.

Every CEO exaggerates, often to the level of being absurd. Knowing that, I fear that JD's prediction of ''okay'' is an exaggeration and this Xmas season will be horrid.

What is "okay" even suppose to mean? So-so holiday season? Just getting by? If that is an exaggeration, than sellers on eBay will be in big trouble.

eBay is definitely attracting holiday shoppers with this new badge, more buyers are expecting free shipping on top of bargain deals - obviously because of the poor economic climate. Yet with that said, smaller sellers are struggling to offer such free postage when they are also dealing with returns and fees.

sigh and double sigh

I'm just glad that I'm not personally selling on eBay anymore. A badge for quick shipping? They took away our Power Seller chops, they add DSRs, they take our dignity, take more money and reduce our margins, add even more rules and more hokey shit...

If I were gonna start an online selling business, eBaywould be the very last place I'd consider...jeezis hach keerist...

FAST = Priority & increased ''protection'' cases.
FREE = Seller Profit Plummet.

Decorating the ebay christmas tree so early?   Buyers already expect delivery the day before they place and pay for an item. All this with Europe on the brink of economic collape, US unemployment rising. Stupid idea.

Since shipping isn't free (last time I checked in the post office) and ebay doesn't ship my items (I do) I find this whole ''free shipping'', fees on shiping, and all ''shipping incentives'' to be examples of immorality.

Ebay is giving something to buyers, yet that ''something'' is not theirs to give.
In normal cirmcumstances this is the right of God and Governments.

I wonder which of the two ebay CEO thinks he is....

As a Seller, I am TRS

As a Buyer - I am fairly oblivious to the bling, flair, and tchotchkis that clutter up the space on the page. I seldom look at the ads on a page, unless it is moving in an annoying way - if I can't ignore it, I LEAVE the page. (PS: I do the same if you load music with your listings.) Folks - You could offer me a million dollars to tell you what ad or what "flair" appeared on a particular screen of a seller I bought from - I would very likely go home penniless!

When buying, my focus is on the item & price. I don't place any extra "value" on free shipping. My momma did not raise a stupid child - I am quite able to add price + shipping together on one item and compare that to a free shipping item to see which is the best deal.
