eBay CEO Raises Mobile Projections, Reaches Out to Developers

By: Ina Steiner

eBay CEO John Donahoe said $5 billion worth of goods would be purchased this year through eBay's mobile apps, which have had 50 million downloads since the first app launched 3 years ago. eBay had said in July it was on track to double its mobile GMV to over $4 billion in 2011.

Donahoe was speaking to Robert Scoble of Building 43 as part of a plug for eBay's upcoming developers conference, and he hammered home the message that eBay could help developers make money. eBay will reveal more about the merging of its eBay, PayPal, Magento developers programs during the X.commerce conference October 12-13, 2011 in San Francisco.

Donahoe told Scoble that developers could make money "building applications and enabling merchants to sell stuff" - for example, he said, eBay has 200 million listings, half of which come through third party listing tools built by outside developers.

Donahoe said there was enormous potential in social and said friends are participating in the shopping experience on eBay, but there was no money changing hands in social. "In commerce, there's money changing hands."

Scoble put Donahoe on the spot by asking him what eBay changes meant for sellers. Scoble's ex-wife was a PowerSeller on eBay and he wanted to know what X.commerce would mean for sellers like her - would this open up a new avenue for PowerSellers to expand, he asked.

Donahoe said eBay was building assets so sellers could expand. He mentioned again eBay mobile apps, and said eBay offers sellers distribution. He said Where.com helps merchants with a physical store geo-target shoppers, and he said his wife could use eBay to sell globally and export her products - eBay sellers in the U.S. exported $5 billion in volume last year, he said.

Scoble also asked Donahoe about China, Google, Facebook - listen to the full interview and let us know what you think!

I thought this was a very interesting article on hacking wireless networks, in which eBay and pay-pal were mentioned as well as more then 50+ Washington business's in the Puget sound area that appear from the article to have been hit.

I wonder how many of those 2600 cars sold daily with an iPhone app were actually paid for??

What I get from all of this is thousands upon thousands of small sellers will be losing more of their eBay income (jobs) since the focus will be on big and small retailers. Retailers being new and those who have brick & mortar stores. I don't see buyers but I do see retailers paying for eBay's ''services'' and for all these developers ''innovations'' on how to grab more money from these same retailers. Obviously eBay is running out of ways to squeeze those last few cents from their current sellers. It is now time to turn to the next plan where eBay can start bleeding these retailers dry under the cloak of innovation.

JD talks about selling internationally but is yanking visibility to their current sellers. (see eCommercebytes Letters post). Also no links to Facebook allowed since eBay is stopping all links. So much for social media. Oh, that is right, none of this is meant for us low life sellers who by the way WERE the biggest buyers.

Really a stretch here with a woman walking past a shop and seeing on her iphone that the item she is looking for just happens to be there. Get real. I can't believe I watched all of this.

Maybe I'm just getting old but I have no urge to use a mobile to buy anything, particularly not anything on eBay.

And, I wonder if Scoble's ex-wife gets the same treatment as most eBay sellers or has JD just put her on the "no touchy" list?

And just how many of those "mobile" shoppers will read the entire description and terms on their tiny screens, disaster waiting to happen!!!

Smart developers who can read the history of past developer interaction with eBay will not put all their eggs in one basket.

eCommerce of the future requires integration between several platforms and Google, ideally with inventory control and book keeping functions.

Sure eBay would like buyers to actually buy something but imagine all the money eBay will make on fees, clicks etc. when they milk these retailers with the glories of being found through their mobile app. You know, the same fees we low life sellers are paying now and of course not being seen due to rolling blackouts, mysterious  algorithms, DSRs and downright theft of services paid and not rendered.

You know eBay's motto - take everything and promise them nothing.

''eBay sellers in the U.S. exported $5 billion in volume last year'' Are you sure about that? This sounds deliberate and misleading to me.

Mr. Donahoe can you clarify  what you actually mean?

Sometime you can deliberately outright lie without making a false statement. For example.
You could say anyone who sold $1 million dollars in merchandise through their website that was exported outside the U.S. who also made two U.S. only sales on ebay totaling $20 was an ebay seller who exported $1 million in merchandise.

If $5 billion in merchandise sold on ebay by ebay sellers in the U.S. was exported why not just say that?

Your global traffic rank is not even in the top 20 so WHO IS BUYING ALL THESE EXPORTS? Before a U.S. seller can export someone in another country has to click and buy. Right? Who is clicking and buying these 5 billion dollars worth of exports?

United Kingdom? ebay.uk not even in the top 90
Australia? ebay.au is not even in the top 350
India? ebay.in not even in the top 675.
Canada? ebay.ca is not even in the top 1,000
China? Oh my gosh ebay.cn is not even in the top 8,000
Japan? Holly Molly, ebay.co.jp is not even in the top 121,500

Why is it one needs to hire a @*!#amn psychic to figure out what you ebay people mean when you make a statement?

Did you notice the size of his hands?

His body has evolved so he can grab more of your money with his bigger hands.

That's easier than growing a conscious.

''And just how many of those ''mobile'' shoppers will read the entire description and terms on their tiny screens, disaster waiting to happen!!! ''

I stopped worrying about that a couple of years ago. Cut my T&Cs to about three short sentences. The only rules that now apply is what eBay and PayPal decide --- and we should all know by now how that is going...

What good is ebay mobile if you cant pay for a purchase by inputting a credit card number????

Credit card payments on mobil through paypal keep getting instantly reversed.

Paypals answer to this problem is to log on to a regular computer to make a purchase using credit card.
Ina, this is an ongoing problem with many, many transactions. Could you please look into this as many sales are being lost to this problem. And I cant believe ebay would be advertising their mobile platform when the most basic way to purchase an online item (credit card) does NOT work.

Why not?

Here is a good example of how purchases made on a mobile phone can finish up—even on Amazon!

All I can think of is how embarrassed Donahoe ought to be at what he's saying (maybe he is, if he's more self-aware than he's letting on; there's something strange and frozen about his general emotional affect).

"We're the technology partner for developers". "We've opened our technology stack, Magento, et. al. in response to developers' demands.

Think about it. eBay was supposed to be the technology-oriented marketplace. Yet how little, how late, are their offerings to developers, because historically, they are a bunch of control freaks who never wanted anything big built on their platform!

Compare them to Amazon, who was supposed to be the retail-oriented Marketplace. Not only is Amazon miles ahead of eBay in terms of managing retail, both 2P and 3P, but they are light-years ahead in offering Web services with cloud computing and the whole Kindle line.

Where eBay has to be dragged into responding to existing developer demands, Amazon is pushing the envelope with new products and services.
