eBay published the following press release this afternoon, recapping the events of 2010, including acquisitions, mobile and payments developments, tailored shopping experiences in fashion, and initiatives in China and in sustainability.

Feel free to comment on what you thought were the big developments of 2010.

How eBay Inc. Connected Buyers and Sellers in 2010
The company drove customer-focused innovations in mobile commerce, user experience and sustainability.

In 2010, eBay Inc. marked its 15th anniversary, and the year included substantial progress and new milestones focused on innovation, connecting buyers and sellers, and sustainability. The company made key acquisitions that extended its leadership in mobile shopping and more, achieved award-winning results with its global citizenship efforts, and both eBay and PayPal delivered enhanced Buyer Protection and Seller Protection initiatives.

Innovation

All divisions of eBay Inc. marked innovation milestones in 2010, both organically and through technology integration from acquisitions. eBay.com's homepage got a complete makeover, including many search and personalization enhancements, and social media experts drove important and convenient integration between eBay and social tools such as Facebook. The company also increased its focus on China, striking new shipping agreements and partnerships that boost cross-border trade, and elevating PayPal's profile in the region.

In June, eBay Inc. bought popular barcode-scanning mobile application RedLaser, which eBay Mobile has since integrated into several of its mobile apps. More recently, the company acquired local search and shopping engine Milo.com, whose cutting-edge technology enabled eBay to launch GiftsNearby - an instant way to check real-time inventory and reserve products at local retailers. The company also bought Critical Path Software, which specializes in mobile application development, and brands4friends, a leading European online shopping club.

On the mobile front, eBay continued to pursue more emerging platforms and innovative applications , including a robust fashion app, and a popular app for the iPad. All told, the company saw more than $2 billion in mobile transactions by year's end.

At PayPal's annual Innovate conference in October, the company unveiled many cutting-edge mobile payment applications, including making important inroads in micropayments, and payments for digital goods such as songs and articles. PayPal also marked the end of the year with a Cashless Utopia event in New York, highlighting many of its innovations this year.

Meanwhile, eBay Inc. continued to innovate and excel with its sustainability efforts. A new data center in Salt Lake City was awarded prestigious LEED Gold certification for environmental friendliness, the eBay Green Team introduced The eBay Box - an innovative and eco-friendly box designed for reuse across thousands of shipments, and Instant Sale debuted, facilitating the exchange of used electronic devices.

Customer Focus

eBay Inc. found new ways to connect buyers and sellers, and support them, in 2010. The company identified important new channels for catering to their needs, including introducing new Buyer Protection initiatives, and ongoing eBay on Location events packed with many eBay buyers and sellers. After acquiring Bill Me Later in 2009, PayPal integrated its services into its checkout offerings, providing customers even more choices online.

eBay also made a customer-focused splash in the fashion world with the launch of a new tailored shopping experience, eBay Fashion, and partnerships with top designers. Additionally, the company appointed Miriam Lahage, a noted fashion executive, as head of its fashion division.

Meanwhile, PayPal increased its focus on new types of goods that customers increasingly want, and new payment vehicles for them. In particular, the company introduced new vehicles for paying for digital goods and content, which often sell through unique distribution models, and call for micropayments. PayPal also concentrated on customer-centric ways to make digital payments through mobile devices and at point-of-sale locations.

As 2011 gets underway, the company will find more ways to connect buyers and sellers, stay focused on technology innovation, and sustainability efforts will grow as the company does.

There is no shortage of self aggrandizing statements created by eBay's public relations department.

Make note of all the boats eBay has made here, and then look for the growth in Q4 sales when eBay announces on 1/19.

All the PR spin in the world means little when sales growth for the marketplace is stuck in single digits.

Amazon will likely report sales growth at close to triple the rate eBay will report.

eBay desperately needs a new management team that has experience selling in it's own marketplace. The existing bunch of Bain - type number crunchers have proven time and again they have no clue how to grow the business that pays their salaries.

You know the numbers are BAD when they don't even mention anything about the Christmas season. Amazon has already let it be known they are up in the neighborhood of 44%. And as Ina noted, the Ebook kindle is a huge thing for AZN, which ebad completely fluffed. Sad this is the best they can come up with.

There are so many very general statements in this, it reminds me of a college student fluffing out his/her paper with a bunch of bu11carp.

Here are some of the keywords and phrases used: innovation, sustainability, integrated. They also had to mention mobile devices a few times.

But, actually they did not mention the big change of increasing their fees in late March that drove/forced many small sellers to either leave eBay or scale down their selling efforts. They did not mention that sales dropped off the cliff for many of the small sellers. They also did not mention what a lack-luster year this was for eBay (single-digit growth). They forgot to mention that there are fewer buyers and sellers on eBay in 2010 compared to other years. They forgot to mention that they pissed off many many small sellers in 2010 who would love to see them sink like the Titanic. I could go on. The point is: eBay did not mention what really happened in 2010.

Warning: You may need a barf bag to get through that press release.

eBay management has really lost focus on who their primary customer is, the sellers. The so called buyer protection is nothing more than a chance to abuse their primary customers even further than they already have. Because of so many bad decisions by management, they now have to put all the risk on the sellers in order to be able to attract buyers again. This will not work over the long run as they will continue to chase more and more good primary customers, the sellers, away to other venues. Their marketplace will continue to struggle over year's of bad management decisions.

There has to be a little bit of acceptable risk, for both the buyers and sellers, to buy and sell online. Just like it was in the early days when eBay was fun and ''just a venue''.

Lots of Smoke & Mirrors there. Look here at our mobile apps, not over there at our failing Marketplace.

It's the old dazzle them with BS.

Donahoe loves his toys, doesn't he?  He just can't be bothered with the core of Ebay, which are the Sellers.  Since Sellers are Buyers, he is losing a lot of both

Well, what are they going to say?

"In 2019 we rolled out several changes throughout the year despite promising sellers they would be limited to twice yearly

and

we continued our apathy towards sellers by moving inquiries to a call center in India and increasing their hold times to over an hour"

But sellers, remember to keep providing that 5 star customer service or or we might suspend you!

Just a fluffy press release using big words and esoteric phrases to baffle everyone with bull----, LOL

Bottom line is that they interfered between buyer and seller much more than they helped, by hiding listings, causing ill will between buyers and sellers, meddling into every aspect of the sale when there is nothing wrong, generally interfering with simple commerce.

Nice written paper, though. I give whoever wrote it an A+ for the use of great big words, and phrases they just learned n business school. Great exercise in how to fluff out your luke-warm, mediocre business to the general public to make it look good. Setting the world on fire, you are not.

What a bunch of corporate speak that ultimately says very little! At least very little to help small sellers on the site.

All I know is that I won't take another year of eBay "connecting" me with buyers like the last couple of years.

More motivation to work harder on my off-eBay business in the new year. Thanks, JD!

With any luck, eBay will make non-store auction listings totally free to list (as they did frequently in the last quarter of 2010) so I can completely close my shrinking eBay store and just use the smaller quantity of auctions to fish for customers to convert to my other venues. Yes, I do follow the eBay rules in my listings and I am happy to pay a small FVF to eBay in exchange for the exposure, but I stopped paying the inflated fees just to list 1000 items in a store there. I have used those funds to pay for more profitable marketing on other venues where the internal exposure is better (yes the total traffic is much lower, but I am increasingly more successful in bringing my customers to the other venue), the fees are much lower, there are no competing ads on my listings, and the headaches are far less. In 2010, my non-eBay sales exceeded my eBay sales while my non-eBay costs were less than what I paid eBay (even in my greatly reduced presence there). It's no longer much of a question for me as to where to place my efforts. Again, thanks, JD!

What a piece of work!

This reminds me of the type of descriptions that Realtors write whenever they're trying to sell dilapidated shacks.

Even when showing the property, they're just GUSHING with praise about the new shower-head (but ignore the fact that the bathroom has no toilet.)

They BEAM WITH PRIDE about the new curtains (and hope we won't notice that the windows have no glass.)

The try to convince us that the SQUEAKY FLOOR is actually a ''First Alert Intruder Detector''.

The DRAFTY ATTIC is billed as a ''natural home cooling'' system.

Their glowing report-card and self-analysis is complete FICTION and absolutely LAUGHABLE in its absurdity!

And as others have noted in this thread, we also need to be aware of all the things that they DID NOT mention.

Simply because eBay fails to acknowledge their own FLOODED BASEMENT and TERMITE INFESTED FOUNDATION does not mean that it doesn't exist!

The article should be called "How eBay Connived Buyers and Sellers in 2010".
I am a long term eBay seller, registered in 1999, over 5,500+ feedbacks. I'm kind of through with eBay because of all their BS. I will only list my items if they offer free listings, or other substantial deals, as it is just not cost effective to list items anymore.
There is no money to be made on this venue anymore after listing fees, final value fees, and Pay Pal fees. For every 20 items listed, I may sell one or two, that's just ridiculous! The only way I could return to listing items like the old days, would be if they got rid of all listing fees completely.

What a joke! All pure disingenuous, obfuscating, unadulterated nonsense direct from the eBay Dept of Spin. Funny, but none of this nonsense bears any relationship to their 10-K filings. Still, I suspect that all the supposed “journalists” and “market analysts” will lap it up and regurgitate it (even sans a fee).

“Online Holiday Spending Up 12% to a Record $32.6 Billion”—WSJ

But how much up is eBay’s Marketplace sales? Five percent? There will be no records broken here at eBay. In other words, relatively speaking, eBay is still going backwards under the policies of the current chief headless turkey, John “Noise” Queeg-Donahoe. Well done John, keep up the good work for Mr Bezos.

One has to wonder whose interests the eBay board of directors have in mind while they tolerate the destructive machinations of this cretinous sociopath, that they have put up for so long with this Bain & Co shill stagnating if not totally destroying eBay’s shareholders’ equity.

Of course, Donahoe has such confidence in his ability to “turnaround” eBay that he has every month since June 2010 been “dribble” selling his eBay stock holdings. I suspect he is surreptitiously provisioning his personal life boat (hoping no one will notice) so that he can live comfortably ever after when he is finally given his marching orders. This “Captain Queeg” certainly has no intention of going down with his ship: the passengers, including the women and children, will have to look after themselves!

eBay/PayPal/Donahoe: Dead Men Walking.

It doesn't matter what you or I think.

It really doesn't matter what Pierre Omidyar thinks because he's far too busy playing Messiah to the Poor and Downtrodden in some foreign country to care about the increasingly poor and downtrodden class of North American bay sellers he recruited and has now nearly exterminated.

Pierre has made himself irrelevant to ebafia.

If ebafia stock became worthless overnight, Omidyar has enough money to last him and 10,000 other people for the rest of their lives and comfortably so.

This jargon laced garbage is precisely what Wall Street wants, and ebafia delivered ten tons of it.

Wall Street and the cloying business media referenced in Google and Yahoo finance boards don't care about reality; fluff is what they demand so they keep unsuspecting potential ebafia investors from knowing the truth.

Wall Street has become little more today than criminally dishonest, corrupt, buttoned down pimps selling high dollar blond corporate prostitutes like The Ho.

And these are the people and the system some politicians want to run the nation's retirement system that would make them even more obscenely rich than they are now.
