eBay Sellers Weigh in on Whitman-Brown Governor Race

By: Ina Steiner

eBay CEO Meg Whitman retired from the corporate world in 2008 and soon after began the run for Governor of California. The election is only 2 months away (November 2), and the poll numbers are heating up in an attempt to predict who will win, Whitman, or California Attorney General Jerry Brown.

We wondered how eBay sellers would vote if they had the chance, so we took our own poll of readers last week and found 61% of eBay sellers would vote for Jerry Brown; 26% would vote for Meg Whitman; 11% would vote for neither; and 2% would vote for another candidate.

Whitman's eBay experience is featured heavily in her campaign, yet only 26% of the sellers who made a full or part-time living on eBay and took our poll said they would vote for Meg Whitman in her bid to take that experience and apply it to running the state of California.

A 2003 article in Fortune magazine stated Whitman and her management team had a "suspicion that eBay runs itself." Whether it's true or not, with California's economic crisis, that's not a situation she'll find herself in should she get to Sacramento.

The poll was open from September 1 and September 5, 2470 readers responded. See the results and some comments from readers who took the poll in Monday's AuctionBytes Newsflash newsletter.

Why would 26% vote for her? Must be 26% ebay trolls. Calif can do better. BTW, No business "runs itself". What a lazy statement from that woman. I would think ZERO ebay sellers would give whitman the time of day.

Ebay trolls I doubt it.

California voters are known for having their heads in the clouds and voting the same way.

Nutmeg like her or not California will soon learn of her incompentence to lead.

...Whitman and her management team had a "suspicion that eBay runs itself."...

haha. Reading through some of the various older articles, (& hearing podcasts/videos etc) puts a serious doubt on all the pumped up claims that Meg built ebay.

My other favorite from that same article, 'Meg and the Machine':
"Most of us say, 'Man, we've got something special. Don't screw it up.'

Also amusing to see the Bobbleheads again.  I never got to see who won them.

I'm really surprised that many Ebay sellers would vote for nutmeg.  Obviously some of them weren't quite themselves when they voted? ;-)

Meg whitman was at best marginally competent when Pierre hired her.

She had few professional achievements before Pierre hired her. She traded on her MBA, gender, and the good old boy/girl MBa network in order to survive.

The woman simply isn't very smart, and the last thing California needs now is another celebrity governor who doesn't understand how to govern. As another poster pointed out, she would spend her time as governor positioning herself to run for President.

What California does need is a full time governor fully committed to solving California's problem and not some empty headed Wall Street creation.

I dislike both so if I lived in California I wouldn't bother to vote.  Any Ebay seller who thinks Meg Whitman was good is simply clueless.  She took a great business model and detroyed it with the purchase of Skype.  Foolish spending by another so called "conservative".  After burying ebay with this terrible business move; she did large fee hike in 2005 which in turn drove away 100's of thousands of sellers who fled to Amazon. And Ebay has never recovered from the purchase of Skype because they foolishly have continued yearly fee hikes which has continued to drive sellers and items off of the Ebay pages and onto Amazon, Craigslist and other sites.  Donahoe is terrible but the blame of Ebay's decline began with Whitman and he's only made it worse.  Very similiar to Bush and Obama in my opinion. So I guess I'll route for Jerry Brown even though I'm a republican

Meg Whitman is bright, sophisticated, well educated and was successful at every position she held. She knows business; she knows people and she will be a great governor of California.

yeah, OK. someone has to vote for her! She DID manage to make MONEY for EBay. She did manage to make money for the sellers who were here, while SHE was here, on Ebay. When she LEFT, so did MOST OF US! I guess, this is what most of her voters seem to remember. Probably the ones with memory problems..poor things..

Whitman made MANY mistakes as CEO of eBay, not just Skype... remember the eBay purchase of several brick and mortar auction companies?... she ruined them and lost money when she sold them. Also Half.com had a wonderful business model when eBay bought it and then they proceeded to wreck it and almost shut it down out of existence (and it might as well be now as it is no where near what it could have become). And why on earth did they leave the firearms market? They could have stayed in the market by spinning off a dedicated web site for firearms instead of giving up on it. Also, what happened in Japan Meg? And how about the stories that came out after Meg left eBay about how loose they ran the place... making big changes with little or no data to back up what would happen when they would make a change... no wonder they would make a change and then reverse themselves so quickly. The only saving grace for eBay now days from that era was the purchase of PayPal and I think just about ANYONE would have made that purchase. So Meg as a top CEO? I don't think so. If California elects her it should make for good drama watching from afar.

Meg Whitman is brilliant. A graduate of Harvard Business School, and a top CEO, she will be excellent for California. Of course, you are all so closed minded that anyone who disagrees with you must be a paid staffer, despite the fact that Meg currently holds a sizeable lead in all California field polls.

The other wildly inaccurate misconception is that Meg took eBay brilliant business model and ruined it. My question is: if eBay was such a great business model before Skype, then why has no company come along to fill the void? All the auction websites online are money losers, bleeding millions in venture capital money, and unable to attract any consistent numbers, users, products, or stats.

Is it any wonder why eBay does effectively nothing about shill bidding but, indeed, effectively condones it?

Here is a classic example that demonstrates that even with, I suspect, not a genuine buyer in sight, eBay can still collect a very healthy FVF; in this case the seller himself is undoubtedly most likely going to pay the FVF (always assuming the auction is not cancelled early); already fifteen bids from three apparent shills within the first seven hours of listing: who are they kidding?

This auction is worth watching to see if there are indeed still any (naïve) buyers left out there prepared to overbid these three very probable shills. It will be interesting to see if either, or both, of this seller’s other two very regular bidding IDs, s***t(4) and m***e(69), eventually makes an appearance later in the auction.

And,
what chance eBay’s claimed “proactive, sophisticated” system for the detection of such shill bidding will detect this pretty obvious example?

She was in the right place at the right time.Ebay did run itself and grew despite of her management because the model was quite simple.A marketplace where you could reach millions at a very modest cost. Then when we had all become surfs because we quit our day jobs to do ebay full time they started bleeding us like vampires with the ever increasing fees(started under her watch by the way).CA if you elect her all I can say is God help you she is clearly just using you as a stepping stone to the white house.

Meg left in shame, in the wake of the entire Vladuz affair, the China failure, the Skype blunder etc. If you go back and look into articles and blogs of the day, they did everything short of poking her with pointy sticks before she finally took the money and ran.

"Disruptive Innovation" was Meg's baby.  She talks about it on youtube video titled something like tiecon 2007.
Is anyone saying "Disruptive Innovation", with regards to ebay, is a success?

Just for fun, run over to youtube and type in Meg Whitman porn and trust fail to the search box. Anyone who was there and saw all that KNOWS what an epic FAILURE Meg was.
Instead of cleaning up the site they resorted to censorship and gestapo tactics to try and make the noise about the hacking stop.

Didn't they?

If elected, it will be interesting to see if Ms. Whitman will quickly avoid any reference to her time spent at the helm of eBay,inc. once said company finds itself in mounting legal problems. Some that are just starting and those that will come.

The company is currently running some of its sights (eBay.com, eBay.ca, Paypal, etc.) without valid USER AGREEMENTS.

eBay,inc. has nullified them by bringing in changes that completely go against the liability section of the UA or are proven bad faith policy changes.

With no valid UA in place, eBay.inc is not in a position to apply sanctions to a seller's account.

To refund buyer a payment and extract it from seller's funds is a big no-no for eBay.

I would strongly suggest that affected users have eBay re-imburse the buyer from their pocket, not sellers, until they fix the UA's and policies to reflect what they always say they are (in the Liability section): just a venue that does not take part in the transaction.

I currently have a small claims court case against eBay,inc./eBay International AG/eBay Canada that they are trying to run and hide from, and just opened one against eBay,inc./PayPal CA Ltd.

Looking into reporting PayPal's recent bad faith policy change (section 11.5) about seller losing protection if buyer redirects a shipment, to proper regulatory bodies.

I wonder how many sellers, using PayPal, do not realize that a buyer DOES NOT not need to have a correct mailing address when making payment.

Nowhere in PayPal's UA does it say that it is required from buyer. Even for off-eBay purchases.

PayPal (actually eBay,inc.) is deliberately having sellers be the fall guy for buyers' errors, whether intentional or not.

Nite all.

If California voters elect Meg Whitman they deserve everything that happens to the state while she's in office. Meg squandered Ebay's vast financial resources and California is already dead broke. The mess she made out of Ebay will be nothing to what she can do with an entire state.

@ Mr Obvious

Yes they did. I was there on the Trust & Safety board when they ordered us to stop posting item numbers of the fraudulent listings. They Narued quite a few posters for pointing out scams on the site. That was when I knew that they were not interested in protecting their users.

I happened to be up early on the morning Vlad took over the Trust & Safety board. I was having my first cup of coffee when he started doing his thing. I watched it in utter amazement.

In his full blown pink adornment, he posted the full ID and credit card numbers of 1200 ebay users. ebay was unable to stop him from posting, so they just shut the boards down.

Later they tried to say that he had gotten into an ''outside'' server and those 1200 were all he got. That was a full blown and flat out lie.

He got all the info on everyone registered at that time. Both the ebay info & the PayPal info. As far as I'm concerned, the proof of that was when he hacked the ME page of ebay's attorney who was troubling him on that German site. Anyone not knowing about that incident just has to google vladuz & noyce.

When that ebay attorney tried to intimidate the German web publisher Falle-internet and Vlad responded by hacking his ebay ME page, I knew Vlad was inside their servers as far as Meg or anyone could go.

Further proof of that came on the day he started suspending all ebay privileges of posters on the Trust & Safety board who he disagreed with. As soon as those members got their notices from ebay, Vlad started reinstating them. That was another funny morning. Those posters were as confused as headless chickens. ebay has never reinstated a suspended member within the hour, but Vlad could.

I don't have any idea what eventually happened to Vlad but I've long suspected ebay paid him off, to just go away and leave them alone.

Smitty
