eBay Gives Free-Shipping Five Stars with New DSR Policy

By: Ina Steiner

eBay confirmed it is now automatically giving sellers five stars on the shipping cost DSR when they offer Free Shipping. eBay spokesperson Johnna Hoff said the process of earning the 5-star shipping cost DSR is as follows:

1) A seller must offer a Free Shipping option on their item.

2) A buyer must choose the free shipping option during payment.

3) eBay must be able to verify the buyer didn't pay shipping costs. Sellers should be sure to offer verifiable payment methods (i.e. PayPal, MoneyBookers, PayMate, ProPay) and use eBay checkout. (Third-party checkouts will work, as long as they provide the full post back information to eBay, so that we can verify the buyer didn't pay for shipping.)

Sellers have wondered why eBay allowed buyers to leave a less than perfect rating on shipping cost DSRs when they offered free shipping, ever since the new Detailed Seller Ratings (DSRs) rolled out in 2007.

AuctionBytes reported sightings of the automatic 5-stars on Tuesday, reported in the AuctionBytes Blog. Hoff confirmed that the change in policy was not a test - "it's available to all eBay sellers," she told AuctionBytes.

Time to ding the competition on a different star then.

Leveling the playing field, one seller at a time.

Now eBay needs to make it retroactive or do they only make things retroactive if it goes against the seller?

"Now eBay needs to make it retroactive or do they only make things retroactive if it goes against the seller?"

You're absolutely correct about that! This really SHOULD be retroactive... eBay has the data and it CAN be done... but they won't.

Great... So if the seller shorts the post office and the buyer has to pay postage due... Hmmmmmm maybe the buyers will be on the other end of the stick for a change...

Phoney baloney, too cumbersome and bogus anti-seller rules. "PROVE thsi and PROVE that" Better to - NOT offer free shipping, ignore buyer requests on shipping to a third party and to try not to get yourself upset over useless feedback..

Just today we got this neutral feedback from some newbie:

requested book be sent to 3rd party.Sent 3rd party adress. Book still sent to me.

We blocked them.

We Ignore their silly feedback comments.

We reported them to ebuyer_feedback.com.

What happened?  Somebody on the team get a brain - it must have been a gift and they tried it on for size!  This was about the basest piece of common sense on earth and yet it took THIS long!  Now about those 4's being okay for buyers to give but death for sellers???

Doesn't matter to me. I never offer free shipping. Besides if someone is determined to ding your stars there are 3 others to ding. See the comment above stating that fact and calling it ''leveling the playing field''. What a loser.

So eBay wants to throw sellers a bone over something that should have been corrected before DSR's were implemented in the first place.

eBay will force sellers to pay for receiving 5 Stars on shipping cost due to the fact that they will be paying higher final value fees if they roll shipping into the selling price.

Proof once again that nothing is done by eBay to benefit sellers unless in some way eBay will financially profit from the gesture.

We have been fortunate enough to be able to maintain high DSR's for shipping without offering free shipping and paying higher Final Value Fees as tribute to eBay.

Hopefully we will never have to resort to offering free shipping and paying higher final value fees simply to guarantee 5 star DSR's.

Besides, if a buyer wants to screw a seller, they are still free to do so with the remaining 3 categories.

I call it bribery. eBay just wants commission off of your shipping costs. FeeBay will come up with anything to milk out more money.

I think what has happened is that Ebay didn't get nearly enough free shipping listings.  Afterall, what was the incentive?  You still get buried in the listings and buyers could ding your shipping cost star anyway.  I guess the chimps on Ebay's management team finally figured this out.....duh, good chimps - bananas all around!

NOTE: If you would like ' free shipping ' you can modify your ebay 'searches' to only show such listed items.......
but if you do bid on items that have a shipping & handling charge, please be logical when leaving feedback for Sellers.
Only the truely ignorant don't realize that free shipping means the cost of shipping is going to be factored into the final selling price.

Unbelievable that ebay buyers are now trained to think shipping is free and that the freaking fairies pay for it.

What a sick joke that ebay sellers are more concerned with stupid effing DSRs than the money they're forced to shell out for that so-called "free shipping", not forgetting to mention the FVF on that "free shipping"...

What a cluster#uck ebay has turned ebay into.

I have never been happier that I left ebay. They are shepherds and thee are the sheep.

Off topic but relevant to ebay profits.

Late today, The Ho sold 16,600+ shares of ebay stock.

A curious pattern seems to appear each quarter. For no discernible reason whatsover (like now), ebay stock climbs upward a few points.

The Ho sells several thousand shares.

The stock then begins to dip again. Only the noise seems to be paying attention.

Looks like another bearish quarter for the ebay.com marketplace.

DEATH TO EBAY CORP. IN 2010.

What a Joke we sent a package last year from the GA/TN state line to a suburb of Atlanta GA we shipped the package in just a couple hours from the time we received the order and it took 14 days and if I would have had FREE SHIPPING I would have received a 5 STAR for shipping. Is this correct.

I just sent a package with out free shipping the weight was 1 pound 4 ounces and we shipped it a couple hours after payment we charged for a Small Flat Rate Box and the order was received following day and we received a 1 Star.
What is wrong with this Picture?
I Smell Greed all over it.
eBay you should be ashamed of your self. What happened to the sellers opinion? It looks to me neither the Buyer or eBay has a bit of integrity.
I think they call this unfair trade practices. Some one needs to start a class action law suit.
