PayPal Shipping Finally Adds Small Priority Flat-Rate Box

By: Ina Steiner

eBay and online sellers have been asking for years why PayPal does not support all of the USPS Priority Mail Flat Rate boxes on PayPal Shipping, a service that lets sellers pay for postage and print labels online. In fact, in our recent blog post asking sellers for postal questions, there were several comments about it:

"Flat rate shipping options for small & large boxes are not available for postage labels on Paypal, only medium is offered... why?"

"Please ask about FLAT RATE BOXES. Why can't customers print postage for the various sizes? The programming is not as complicated as it is for zoned rates. (Although the Post Office DOES have that covered.) Sellers have gotten the run around about this FOR THREE YEARS!!! eBay blames the Post Office, the Post office blames Paypay, then someone else says it's Pitney Bowes fault."

It's also a frequent topic on discussion boards, including on PayPal boards, such as this thread.

But if you check PayPal Shipping today, it offers the Small Flat Rate Box; Medium Flat Rate Box; and Large Flat Rate Box, in addition to Flat Rate Envelope.

Sellers have been waiting for this for a long time and can cross one pet peeve off their list!

How about doing this for international? Right now you have to choose priority or express, why not offer something for items that weigh 2 ounces to a few pounds without having to choose priority?

I'd like to see the Post Office offer all rates on their Click n Ship - this business of Paypal with only half the rates covered and stamps.com, endicia - pitney Bows, etc. charge too darn much for the service!  This should be a service of USPS same as if we went there and stood in line!

''What's the catch? lol''

The loss of seller protection on packages that the buyer forwards to another address.  The change to paypal user agreement  (as posted on the earlier auctionbytes discussion):

''If you originally ship the item to the shipping address on the Transaction Details Page but the item is later redirected to a different address, you will not be eligible for seller protection. We therefore recommend not using a shipping service that is controlled by the buyer.''

The USPS allows buyers to change their address - the buyer controls the delivery.  Paypal doesn't recommend that you use a shipping service like USPS.  So papal is giving you more shipping options on a service that they don't recommend for shipping. That is the catch.

The MBA's running this company continue to display an amazing disconnect.

They boast the ''lowest fees ever'' to conceal substantial increases in fees, and alienate sellers with their lack of honesty and transparency.

They implement system changes without concern or consideration for negative impact oin sellers.

They finally get around to offering something sellers have been begging and pleading for, something positive for both buyers and sellers, and presto.... no announcement from the company.

One would think that with all the MBA's leading this company... with all the outrage sellers have for the company, that the company would have seized on the positive news for a change and made an announcement.

Instead, this change was simply rolled out without comment.

This stealth roll out by eBay management serves to highlight the disconnect that prevails in the executive cubicles in San Jose.

The ineptness of this management team is absolutely incredible.

@On Lies and Secrets - ''What's the catch? lol''

Simple. Paypal can steal your money faster.

Adding flat rate shipping would have been good except for the fact they put other policies in place before they did this to give all the criminals on their site enhanced tools to perpetrate their crimes easier. By adding priority shipping features at this point speeds up the criminal process.

Look at it with the opinion that everything ebay and paypal does is a scheme to get their hands on users money and things make sense. Nothing is ever what it appears to be on the surface with ebay and paypal.

I would like to see all package rates available on the click and ship postal site, right now they do not cover first class or parcel post which seems some what odd since they give you a discount for buying postage online because it saves them money but then they don't let you pick from all there services.

@Ric Roe - love your posts but in this one you are assuming that Ebay gives one whit about the sellers.  In their utter arrogance and ignorance they feel they are doing the sellers a big favor by simply allowing them to list on their site!  Sellers all need to face that fact and proceed accordingly.

I believe this feeling is finally spilling over to buyers too.  I received a message from a buyer on Ebay - she wanted to purchase some things from me but could I please put them on Bonanzle?  I do so and she promptly bought 4 items from me.  Said she never buys or sells on ebay anymore.  I am hoping this attitude spreads to more buyers ;-)

Yes and they got the postage costs off now for flat rates. Before you pay it shows the cost and then when you look at your receipt its different.

but clearly Paypal is setting their own postage prices now, the rates are off but hey i dont care anymore. There's alternatives for shipping so I'm happy

@Patricia

Sorry, I did not mean to give the impression that eBay gave a ship about sellers.

I was attempting to illustrate the failure of an inept management team which took years to get around to doing something positive with regard to shipping options, and them simply implemented the change without so much as an announcement to the parties concerned.

This to me shows a blatant disregard for sellers, almost as though they resent the fact that sellers pushed them into updating shipping options against their will.

The only concern eBay has with regard to their sellers is how they can fleece more revenue out of sellers.

If my wording gave anyone the impression that I believed eBay has the least bit of concern for sellers, I apologize.

We've heard your thoughts and comments over the past several months and we're excited to announce that you can now select USPS Priority Mail Small and Large Flat Rate Boxes with PayPal Shipping! We know that many of you enjoy using the existing USPS Medium Flat Rate Box option, but you've requested support for USPS Small and Large Flat Rate Boxes as well. Next time you ship a USPS Priority Mail package via PayPal Shipping try out one of these two new package types for either domestic or international shipments!

Note: Weight restrictions for Domestic are 70 lbs. Weight restrictions for Priority Mail International are 4 lbs for the Flat Rate Envelope and Small Flat Rate Box; 20 lbs for the Medium and Large Flat Rate Box.

Flat rate prices are available when material is sent in a USPS produced Flat Rate Envelope or Box. When sealing a Flat Rate Box or Flat Rate Envelope, the container flaps must be able to close within the normal folds. Tape may be applied to the flaps and seams to reinforce the container; provided the design of the container is not enlarged by opening the sides and the container is not reconstructed in any way.

You may order free packaging supplies at usps.com and find out more information about Priority Mail at prioritymail.com

@ Buck

Where Amanda states,

''We've heard your thoughts and comments over the past several months''.

That is plain old BS. The PayPal shipping users have been asking for the Large Flat rate boxes, for a number of years. Usually daily on the PayPal discussion board.

Endicia, a real shipping service, has any new postal service available to their customers, on the first day the USPS implements it.

BTW, keep your eye on Ms. Pires, as she has the potential to continue rising in the PayPal ranks. Anyone who can lie with such fluidity as her, is a natural fit in that management team.
