eBay Exec Stephanie Tilenius to Head Google Commerce

By: Ina Steiner

Sponsored Link

Former eBay executive Stephanie Tilenius is joining Google to become Vice President of Commerce - a new position - according to the New York Times. Ms. Tilenius was a part of eBay's China strategy, and she later became instrumental in bringing on enterprise merchants to eBay and wooing large retail chains.

She had announced her departure from eBay in September 2009, saying she was looking for opportunities to lead a company as CEO.

The Times points out the challenge online retailers would face if Google competes in the retail landscape, "as many of them get a majority of their traffic from Google, both through Web search and search ads."

While eBay sellers have long called on Google to launch a marketplace to compete with eBay, the hiring of Ms. Tilenius does not necessarily signal a shift in Google's ecommerce strategy. It seems more likely Google is looking for her experience in dealing with large merchants and her knowledge of online-shopping trends.

Google offers online payment and advertising services to retailers, and in November, it launched Google Commerce Search, a search tool sold to retailers to help shoppers find items on their website. The service provides a single feed of a retailer's catalog for their own website store that also integrates with Google Product Search.

I'm waiting for official confirmation of the news from Google.

Look at it another way. She had the good sense to get OUT of eBay. She has a LOT knowledge of the inner workings of eBay, and could be a valuable asset to Google Payments. I think it's natural to pull the trigger early on judging her hiring, but I think this is a pretty shrewd move.

as news hit the corporate offices of ebay inc, red faced teary eyed executives crawled to the nursery where they shook their rattles, sucked their thumbs and waited for a consultant to come in and change their diapers. They listened to the screaming sounds blasting out from their baby monitors

waaaa
Nanny, help.
Goog Goog take away

On the face of it, it looks to me like Tilenius was in essence 'fired' by the ebay corporation though technically, she may have 'resigned'.  In Ina's post, the reason Tilenius gave for leaving the eabay corporation  was to land a job as CEO.  Apparently this has not happened and she didn't leave ebay in order to go to her next job which apparently wasn't lined up.   This job with Google appears to be one that was created for her and may actually be a demotion - at ebay she was a Senior Vice President & General Manager, eBay North America and this newly created job title is ''vice president.''  My initial speculation about this is that she sold google executives on her knowledge and abilities and google didn't really want to give up an existing job position to a person like Tilenius, so they created a new one and tried to make it look like a lateral move.  I suspect that google will use her and then unceremoniously  discard her when they are finished with her.  The folks at google seem fairly sharp... I think the google corporation has the upper hand in this one...

There is an old folk aphorism: 'A dog that will bring a bone will carry one.'

I suspect that Tilenius may not have the google position so much for the bones that she brings to them, but rather for the bones that she will carry back to her old social networks and former colleagues.  These comments are all purely speculation on my part...

I think we should cut her some slack here, after all look who she had to report to and most likely she had alot of really stupid direction she was forced to follow from you know who.

She has to have some talent and will benefit Google either in checkout or ecommerce...

We all know Google only hires the best they can, and at google if you don't contribute your history real fast...

Let see what it brings...

"she later became instrumental in bringing on enterprise merchants to eBay and wooing large retail chains."

and

"her experience in dealing with large merchants"

So, do we read this as Google will pursue the large retailers and leave us small guys out in the rain (like eBay)?

If so, I can give up hoping for Google to become an alternative for my business.

Drat!

Zappo's was bought by Amazon last year for 1.2 billion.
Amazon quickly dumped Bill Me Later when ebay bought it so I doubt they want anything to do with ebay, even former employees.

It's probably the internal politics that probably made her leave.  GlassDoor is filled with employee reviews about how bad the situation is inside ebay.

I say good for Stephanie. Ebay is smoldering while Google is always innovating and growing.
Seems like a good fit.

Connect the dots.

The article in the uktimes the other day alleged John Donahoe has moved out what, if you read between the lines, were Meg Whitman's inner circle of synchophants and failures which may be one in the same and in probably qwuite a long list given the number of quite public Whitman failures.

The Black Hole wants his own team -- a new set of Black Hole loyal, conscience free greed machines to replace the old set of Whitman loyal, conscience free greed machines.

Stephanie Tilenius embarassed The Black Hole by prematurely announcing Zappos was coming onboard only to have Zappos announce a few hours later they were actually on board with Amazon.

A few weeks later she unceremoniously announces she's moving to seek new opportunities. That's corporate speak for TERMINATION.

If I were Goggle management, the last thing I'd do would be announce she was hired to facilitate a head to head competition with ebay or PayPal. I'd announce a diversion or several diversions while very quietly gearing up to annihilate ebay and PayPal.

Just something that makes you go Hmm..something could be in the works.
Google had partnered with 3 different types of marketplaces in Nov. 2009. eCrater ( fixed price for almost anything ). Ebid ( auction & fixed price for almost anything ). Etsy ( handmade & vintage ). 2 have 2-3 million items but I don't know how many Etsy has...but it is very popular.

Auctionbytes posted about this in Nov. I think this makes today's announcement quite interesting. Maybe they will get into more ecommerce...I hope they do! Ebay needs some strong competition and many sellers need another venue.

Most execs when they leave they have a do not compete clause, tied to their compensation. So it's interestin that she is going to Google so quickly. She's either ticked off and she wants to bury Ebay/Paypal, OR she's a plant. Which ebay actually seems to like to do if you notice where all the others end up going to (ie ebay like or paypal like competitors who end up changing direction)

No executive gives a presentation without it being written and proofed. They could of very well threw her under the bus. It's interesting she's been credited re JD for doing certain things which we apparently know nothing of. Interesting all the same. If she's ticked off, that'll be really good.

The more of these parasites that leave eBay the better, they  live off the backs of small seller fees, yet promise mega sellers over a latte at Starbuck (the new yuppies…dumb but with a Diploma LOL) zero listing fees with high exposure…

I am very bitter my selling fees at eBay are stupid and all I ever get from them is treats of imminent suspension via MY DSR’S for post office delays

to fruity-

"They could of very well threw her under the bus"

Funny, I was thinking the exact same thing. She looked so awful throughout that presentation (the Zappos presentation), worn, tired, even burned out.

And another thing, eBay has got to have corporate intel going on, and they must have gotten some wind of Amazon and Zappos, at the very least, they must have had a lukewarm feeling from them.

It'll be interesting to see how this all pans out.

''It'll be interesting to see how this all pans out.''

IMO, Tilenius is a pawn.  She doesn't appear to be calling any of the shots.  She seems to be the ball in play.  She quickly left ebay with no new job lined up so she didn't have the power at ebay to keep her job there.  Google created a position for her, so they probably weren't looking to lure her away from ebay - they just decided that she would suit their purposes.  But it doesn't seem that they have reorganized their organizational structure for what she brings to them - many organizations have several VPs of various and sundry things and can operate successfully without most of them.  The VP title can easily have little relevant organizational power associated with it.  It really seems to me that she is a pawn who is about to get played.  In a match of wits between google and ebay, I'd bet on google.

Yep, I think this will be interesting. Somebody break out the virtual popcorn.  I am ready to watch this show.

My first thought was that she helped sink Ebay, and now is she going to sink Google?  In my opinion, ALL of Ebay's executives are greedy idiots.

If her expertise is large retail merchants, then is that the direction Google intends to head in? Will this direction swamp and eventually sink the small Sellers who rely on Google feeds?

Or, is she a spy entering an enemy camp, like how Ebay sent spies into the Craig's List organization to get information on the classifieds business.
Perhaps Google management should keep a close eye on Stephanie.

Maybe Google just wanted to tie her up so that she couldn't take any of her Ebay knowledge to anyone else, like Amazon (like Amazon would have any use for Ebay knowledge-LOL).

Interesting mystery! We will have to see what develops.  Pass the virtual popcorn.  The show is about to start.

Is anyone keeping track of how many higher profile people from ebay are leaving? And out of those, how many have gone to competitors?
There was just another write up her at AB a few days ago, did everyone see that?
