eBay Update: Q3 Earnings and New Dupes Policy

By: Ina Steiner

Sponsored Link

Never a dull moment covering eBay - the company will announce third-quarter earnings on Wednesday, and nobody's expecting a stellar marketplace performance - these days, "less worse" is considered a positive for eBay.com. This will be CEO John Donahoe's first call after Lorrie Norrington's resignation, it would be good to hear John talk about who's helping him run the company, and about holiday-shopping marketing. Look for the earnings release here tomorrow afternoon, and we'll cover the post-earnings conference call with analysts.

Meanwhile sellers are bracing for eBay's new Dupes Policy that goes into effect next week. eBay reminded sellers that, beginning October 26, they are not allowed duplicate listings for identical items - "Any listings identified as duplicates on this date will be automatically ended and sellers will be limited to one Fixed Price listing per identical item or up to five listings if the item is made to fit specific products, models or brands."

An AuctionBytes reader who saw the announcement today after logging into his account today wrote, "I sell so many variations of the same product that this puts me out of business. Ebay has no idea what they are doing at this point! They have completely lost their minds. After 5 solid years of 250k per year, and 100% feedback, with TRS status, I feel this is the end of my selling on eBay."

Everyone will be holding their collective breath to see what happens when eBay automatically ends what will likely be a huge amount of what it considers duplicate listings - this just as holiday shopping is ramping up. See more about the duplicate listing policy in this AuctionBytes Blog post from last month.

eBay is also urging sellers to sign a petition in support of Congressman Paul Hodes' bipartisan resolution, H.Res. 1570, that calls on Congress "to protect Internet entrepreneurs and small businesses from new tax burdens. Now the debate over Internet sales taxes is really heating up, and we need your help more than ever."

My Q3 ebay sales were average and consistant, but holy cow did that change at the last week of Sept!  I had not been keeping up on the ebay corp. drama, nor the changes because I was focusing on buying for the holidays.

The change in traffic, and exposure for new item releases is now completely absent - they do not show on search if they have any wording similar to other items.

I plan on going back to my prior career in 2011 after dumping what's left of my inventory in the next 2 months, and ebay could care less.  Once I leave, I will never visit the ebay site again because it is like looking at a corpse, and I actually feel sympathy for my competition who might be niave enough to stay on ebay.

Norrington left before the coming collapse of ebay, and I suggest investors take their profits now because Q1 2011 will start the rigor mortis of the ebay concept.  Anyone with an investment in ebay, especially sellers who purchase at this time of year are going to be very disappointed when they realize this market now has no pulse.

What's incredible now is that no grown ups are running the company.  Customer service phone calls that don't accidently hang up are routed to some other planet, and chat support wait times were like 1 hour 45 minutes tonight!

Its time for investors, sellers and anyone with a dog in the hunt to pull out now and just let the fizz go flat until Donahoe does the perp walk and ebay is restored.  I'm definately getting out of this mess quickly.  Q3 2010 might fool some, but Q1 2011 is going to be grim.

I find it hard to believe that Meg Whitman let this group sink the ship.  Pierre, are you listening?

In May 2008, Scot Wingo interviewed eBay CEO John Donahoe for Wingo's blog ''Ebay Strategies''

Wingo - ''What are you doing to accelerate eBay?''

Donahoe - ''We are driving more changes than ever. There are no silver bullets, we're testing in different geos, when we find things that work, we'll do more of them and less of the ones that don't.''

Donahoe is delusional.  There is no other explanation.

I feel for sellers who have items that easily appear as duplicates; presumably in clothes and such where there re size and color variations.

I've got about 26 or so duplicates, but these are simply that--honest duplicates; items that have been uploaded twice in error, so the change works for me and will be effortless and have no effect.

Ebay...they just don't get it.

People have been predicting the demise of ebay every time we get close to the quarterly results.
Now its going to be in 2011 !
It never seems to happen.
The share prices has gone from just under $20 to just under $25 in 6 months.
JD for all of his silly smile and hopeless leadership just seems able to pull it out of the bag.

I agree with Digby that Ebay hasn't collapsed and also add that Ebay is still making profit. However, the arrival of JD was meant to improve Ebay fortunes. Instead it has stagnated. In April 2008 when JD took over the share price was about $30 now it is about $25 and let's not forget that it was about $27.50 in March this year. In the current economic climate ,given the fact that Ebay became known for the sale of used items, its share price should have skyrocketed. Instead all the focus is how to become like Amazon selling new items which can easily be found elsewhere!

Personally I am thrilled that eBay is doing this and hope it takes effect on eBay motors as well. For years I have been selling listing one listing per item while competitors will like 4 or 5 per day in an attempt to flood the market. I hate this both as a buyer or a seller. The constant eBay apocalypse attitude of this blog and more so its comments even in the face good new ideas such as this one is discouraging.

Doesn't anyone realize it doesn't matter what you think. Just like any other business THE BOTTOM LINE is the only thing that counts.

Just like any other business people don't like Ebay.

It just doesn't matter how much you make or don't make. As long as Ebays bottom line is fine with wall street Ebay wins.

Donut can lie, twist, restate, forge, or bend the figures but as long as wall street believes him, you disenters will be the losers.

Donut will be at the head of Ebay long after you and I are gone.

I don't give much hope that anything significant will happen to punish JD for the "disruptive innovation" policies that have driven many good sellers (and buyers) off of eBay in the past few years.  It's now obvious that he entire board of directors support him so I don't expect to see any real change in the near future.  I'll just continue with my own programs for making eBay a smaller part of my overall business.

BUT, I do look forward to seeing what effect this new dups policy has on the total number of listings that currently stands at around 117 million items.  That will be interesting.

''Ebay is still making profit.''  Are they?

What if? Deduct the money they owe customers. Deduct all account holder money sitting in frozen paypal accounts. Don't count both paypal buyer refunds as paypal holdings and seller reimbursements to ebay (it's the same money). Deduct interest they draw off frozen accounts. Deduct for billing errors . . . blah, blah, blah.  Just count the legitimate income from listing fees, final value fees and paypal fees where no dispute is filed and they do not mess with the money. How much would be left? Eliminate the income from stolen and counterfeit items. Now how much is left? Do a clean accounting and maybe they are not that profitable.

The facts are clear, Paypal and advertising are holding up ebay. The core marketplace is failing completely. The FACT that other venues directly in competition  with ebay, revenues and growth have skyrocketed in a bad economy tells you that John Donahoe is a failure. I believe and it is also a fact that Donahoe drug ebay to the mud, bought stock at a rock bottom price and now he will sell it. Just lke Whitman and oyther sold a billion in stock when Donahoe came in and cashed in, they now can do it again on their new stock shares. This is insider trading and it has been going on for years. Donahoe and others will be dumping their stock, look for Donahoe to be gone soon as he cashes in this was his  plan in the first place where are the regulators , oh I forgot ebay is protected well by politicians that is how they are getting away with it.

Remember complaints about items duplicating themselves?

Do you think this phenomenon will just stop over night?

What happens if it does not stop?

''Sellers who continue to have duplicate listings after this occurs may be subject to a range of actions, including listing cancellation, loss of fees, limits on account privileges, loss of seller status, and account suspension.''

Just tell eBay it was their fault.

If / when you get through.

I think the no dupes policy should have been done long ago.Ebay is supposed to be about variety and finding anything you can think of(at least it used to be )not pulling up 5 pages straight of the same item from the same seller

Ebay only wants you to help them fight internet taxation, because the way the laws are written, THEY will be on the hook to coolect & pay these taxes & they can't handle that with Ebay's CRUMMY software.

Q3 results? Everybody knows they are gonna SUCK or ebay wouldnt have to give away 300 free auction listings to sellers to get them to list, and they wouldn't be damaging the "finding experience" further unless they realized it's broken. Natural search, ebay, that's that we want, not more techno crap that won't work anyway. Ebay, it's almost over, you better heed our warnings & stop favoring chink junk jobbers over US sellers.

Billions & billions of listings don't mean nothing when STR is about 10% nowadays. Buy manages maybe 15% STR with the whole game tilted in their favor, I guess DUMMYHO likes to help his competition out at the expense of sellers like me that had 60% STR for years & paid fees besides! Now I make my sales on Amazon, Ecrater & Bonanzle, saves me a couple thou a month I used to give Feebay por nada!

The reason Idiotboy is still in charge is because Corporate PIGS have decided that the want to fight the first sale doctrine, and killing off the world's biggest flea market is just a start, there are a number of cases in the courts where these PIGS are trying to prevent you from reselling your own items. Hence the push for digital delivery, you cannot resell these items.

'' Ebay has no idea what they are doing at this point! ''  They have NEVER had any idea what they are doing! This company has constantly been run by throwing things at the wall to see what sticks!  Had it been run properly from the start it would be worth a lot more than it is now and would never have hit this kind of low!  Wall Street has never taken the time to understand Ebay's business or they would know what trouble it is in right now and how mismanaged it was and still is.

I'd like to see a discussion here about the article on auctionbytes of how Ebay will be working on its search engine.  The nickname for it ''cassini'' seems to be all telling as to what they will be pointing it at this time!!!!

Doing anything on ebay is a lesson in futility.  Put stores on core search, remove them 2 months later. Encourage sellers to list duplicates and take off the maximum limit, prohibit sellers from listing duplicates just about a year later.  Silly policy, eBay made more money by allowing duplicate listings.  Now sellers have to wait until one sells to list another or indicate they have more and hope for contact.  Duplicate listings always bugged me and if somebody was selling off a set of stemware, I'd have to scroll through 8-12 listings for the wine, the water, the cordial, the champagne, etc., etc.  eBay seems intent on making itself irrelevant to anybody who might use it and more of a clearing house for Chinese imports.  We got Pier I for that and Big Lots.  Q3 isn't going to help Meg either, not that she stands much of a chance either way. Lorrie was smart to get off this sinking ship.

The only reason eBay would petition to support anything is if it benefits them.  And this petition benefits them. Imagine the horror of having to hire or outsource the management of all of it's members accounts and 1099 them.  And of course, if a seller gets paid sales tax, and any part of that tax is charged a fee by PayPal, how does eBay calculate the actual taxes vs what the seller got after fees? We have to assume that the total price, including taxes, went through PP and they took a cut. Is eBay going to separate taxes so it's not taxed by PP anymore? It would be a nightmare for eBay and any company that acts as a storefront or "venue" as eBay claims it is.  I'll make the popcorn :)

eBay is calling the (umpteenth) refinement of their search programs as CODENAME: CASSINI.

That's the name of NASA's probe that is wondering around Saturn and its moons.

I guess eBay,inc. feels the answers (and buyers) lie off-world.

So whenever a seller is wondering where their listings are, all you have to say is...

''Look! Up in the sky. Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No! It's BEST MATCH''.

But then again, it may be that eBay wants to be the first to expand into the inter-planetary commerce market, which remains uncultivated by businesses for some reason.
