eBay's Web-hosting Service ProStores Outage Caused by Storm

By: Ina Steiner

Bad weather in San Jose, California has caused power outages that have brought down eBay's web-hosting service. It appears ProStores has been down since at least 8:15 am. Customer Support told one seller the site would be back up tomorrow.

ProStores Discussion Board is also inaccessible. A blogger named Matthew Montgomery is following the outage on Twitter.

Interesting that a storm in San Jose can bring down all these independent retailers' websites. I've got calls into eBay and ProStores' PR firm, will update when I learn more. If you are affected, keep us posted.

Update 11:30 am:
Statement from Lin Shearer of ProStores: "The San Jose area is experiencing a storm-related power outage that is affecting our datacenter. Our backup power systems initially functioned correctly - moving to battery power as a bridge to the generators which then failed to come online. The generators are now up and we are working to get all servers back online. We anticipate having service fully restored within two to three hours. We will be conducting a thorough investigation to determine why the generators did not turn on in order to ensure this doesn't happen again."

Also note that ProStores is posting updates on Twitter.

Hi Ina,

Thanks for the link and attribution, I'm also a ProStores Certified Designer.

According to the PG%E Website its still under investigation. http://www.pge.com/myhome/customerservice/energystatus/outagemap/ and they've upgraded it from only affecting 50 or less customers to affecting over 5,000. :-/

And this supposed to be a "State-of-the-art" data center, which moved from Florida to California. What's next? eBay off-line, Paypal? we will soon see.

Ebay was already offline a day & a half during the biggest shopping weekend of the year. JD's great program of not refusing to reinvest ebaypals 5 billion hiding offshore in the USA operation is coming to fruition.

Yes. I just called Prostores and the agent told me that there is no estimated time on when service will be restored. Prostores suffers these kind of outages every so many months. As to why a company like ebay doesn't have redundancy is beyond me. I do notice, however, that ebay's main site never goes down; its as if they don't care about the independent merchants. I've already begun finding someone to convert my Prostores store into a Yahoo store---that is now priority #1.

How come Ebay has redundant servers but they don't have backup servers for the prostores clients

Prostores' Customer Service has been bad enough. (Never answers a question straight.) Now the whole service.

EBAY stock up 2.5% today ahead of tomorrow's earnings.  Shaeholders aren't concerned when a segment of the company is offline?

Through the grapevine, I hear that the estimate to having everything back up is 90 minutes.

Amazing that Prostores main site is up, but the merchants are down.  Again how they can migrate their datacenter into a high risk area (did I say fault line) and have no redundancy just demonstrates Ebay's lack of caring for its clients.

I can't believe I pay for this lack of service.  Maybe converting to Yahoo is the answer or maybe google or maybe ANY OTHER VENDOR THAT ACTUALLY CARES..... -- just not amazon.

Now it appears that the sites are back up. But the Administration log-in area in down.

Seriously, anybody reading this and thinking about using Prostores for your store platform--DON'T. Go with Yahoo Stores or any other platform. If I had to do it over again, I would go with another platform and as soon as I can I will be switching. The fact that their customer service is farmed out overseas somewhere and the fact that they have no redundancy for Prostores should tell you all you need to know about their commitment to the Prostores platform.

Can anyone tell me whether this is ProStores' own data center or a leased one? Are they operating it themselves?

The stores appear to be back up, but we've been having issues with customers being able to check out.  Meaning, they're not.

prostores needs to provide service so they will have to fix it. They have no choice. They can't swap out some change in the user agreement that says it may be available. lol.

Start serving!

If all of you know how a data center works, you'll know it's not instant. Don't think it's easy to restore hundreds of severs in a manner of seconds when you have to go through each server, which houses thousands upon thousands of stores. Plus, they made sure all data was not lost during the power outage. And for the record, if you hear bad reviews about ProStores then it's the merchants fault. ProStores is extremely easy to use, but previous owners have bad experiences with it just because they don't know what they're doing.

ANONYMOUS poster abcd (21:08:02):
''If all of you know how a data center works''

All people don't.  Which is why some folks find it very easy to snow others.

abcd:
''you'll know it's not instant'

If it's mission critical, most cases anywhere from seconds to 30 minutes, depending on the type of outage.

Anything longer indicates a
* situation beyond the control of the center.  Like a hurricane, etc.
* staff problem. There is no on-site staff and people need to be tossed out of bed. The on-site staff is incapable of fixing the problem. The on-site staff needs outside assistance.  Etc.
* software problem.
* replacement of hardware problem.
* lengthy mandatory restart procedure.
* problem with the management outage plan.
* ...

Generally if a restart is going to take a significant amount of time, control is passed to an ''auxiliary'' site.

abcd:
''Don't think it's easy to restore hundreds of severs in a manner of seconds when you have to go through each server, which houses thousands upon thousands of stores. Plus, they made sure all data was not lost during the power outage.''

That's what diagnostic and status software/hardware is for.  Again assuming the data center is considered mission critical.

abcd:
''And for the record, if you hear bad reviews about ProStores then it's the merchants fault.''

Being on the record has a value proportional to the experience and validity of the person 'being on the record.'   Being ''abcd'' or that sacrificial code monkey eBay trotted out during their last outage, doesn't cut it.

Or was that you?

'We will be conducting a thorough investigation to determine why the generators did not turn on in order to ensure this doesn't happen again."

Answer:  Incompetence or sabotage.  Take your pick.  No way would I EVER have a Prostore account.
