Amazon Breaks eBay's Record for Unique Visitors

By: Ina Steiner

Sponsored Link

Amazon reached a record 66.5 million unique visitors to its website in December 2009, an increase of over 9% from November, and an increase of 8.8% year-over-year, according to data provided by Nielsen. Traffic to Amazon.com was up 33% year-over-year in December as measured by page views. Meanwhile, eBay traffic decreased 6% from November and experienced its third consecutive year-over-year decline in page views for the month of December.

The number of unique visitors to Amazon.com in December is significant for another reason. eBay reached its peak number of visitors in December 2006: 66.193 million, and it hasn't broken 60 million since August 2007. Amazon reached 66.472 million unique visitors in December, breaking eBay's record. (Analysis is based on eBay data going back to January 2005, and Amazon.com data back to October 2007.)

Amazon is also closing the gap in page views, and unless eBay can stop its decline in traffic, Amazon could come close or tie eBay as early as the fourth quarter of 2010.

While eBay management has pushed the fixed-price format as a cure for its woes, eBay sellers have not necessarily agreed. A widely circulated report from J.P. Morgan last week says its survey of 13 eBay PowerSellers show that sellers believe eBay is shifting too much away from auctions and is making eBay too similar to Amazon.

eBay has also been promoting PayPal as its salvation, and it confirmed that PayPal has increased the amount of transaction holds on seller accounts since late 2009, tying up sellers' funds.

All eyes will be on eBay this week as it reveals fourth quarter earnings after market close on Wednesday. Amazon.com will report earnings on January 28 at 5 pm Eastern.

And if you count the fact that there are bugs/glitches in the ebay sign in system a lot of those page views are really double ups !
I think ebay should listen to those 13 powersellers and go back to their auction roots emphasis.
Let Amazon compete with Walmart etc.

I'm forever grateful that I no longer need Ebay because as someone who has experienced selling, or lack thereof, on Ebay during the 2009 holiday season its amazing that Amazon hasn't beaten them right into the ground - I feel that may be the case but there is the constant flush of smoke and mirrors put out by Ebay...so the blatant truth is pretty much covered up.

When is this madness going to end?  I'm sure Mr. Donahoe, (who seems to have his head screwed on backwards so he is continually talking to his own...) is going to say he's on the right track and will prove it (in his mind) by beating up small sellers even more!  Afterall, he's only completed the second year of his madness - there's still one more year to go - the year when the supposed ''miracle'' will happen!  One more year to tear down what once was a phenomenon - one year to put even more mom & pop sellers out of business (you know, the same mom & pop sellers Meg Whitman keeps bragging about!) One more year for diamond sellers and ads that take buyers offsite to rape Ebay of its buyers - in the name of the fast buck!!!  When a company has to stoop to having Paypal perform 21 day holds and rolling reserves on its sellers then you know its in dire, dire straits!

There's no sense waiting for the board of directors to wake up...as I said, there's no sense!  All we can do is sit back and watch the slaughter.

Ina, are you going to write a blog article on the footnote "eBay has also been promoting PayPal as its salvation, and it confirmed that PayPal has increased the amount of transaction holds on seller accounts since late 2009, tying up sellers' funds."

this might be overlooked by people

In this case, statistics lie....

Amazon is leading eBay in unique visitors but by larger numbers than the statistics show.

As eBay requires log ins for just about every different area one enters, eBay's stats are even lower than these statistics show.

Log in to search, log in to see My eBay, log in to view discussion boards... each of these actions inflate eBay's unique visitor counts.

Some sellers still find that they myst dump temp files, cookies etc... and sign in all over again to view their dashboard, again inflating eBay's counts.

Everything about eBay these days is smoke and mirrors, there is barely a shred of honesty or integrity coming out of San Jose these days.

This company has completely lost it's way, to the point that management is a victim of believing their own public relations spin. They enact new policy and system changes as if the BS management spews is true.

Sadly, they still think they are doing a great job of restoring buyer confidence in the site, while the facts and statistics prove the exact opposite.

John Donahoe and his entire management team have zero credibility with buyers and sellers.

It seems the only people not aware of that fact are in cubicles and Board Room in San Jose.

I will be listening on the 20th, as I love good fairytales.  I want to hear the new theory on why views/sales are down.  And, now that Ebay is a shell of its former self, we can watch Mr. D do the same to Paypal. Anticlimactic is the word I would use.

Is 13 power sellers enough to make a conclusion for a report? And as mentioned before, there are reports that Ebay's revenue will be up by about 12% but mainly because of Paypal.

I think it's worth watching if you haven't already:

JD's
whinnyness is so pathetic! He seems to think that he alone is a victim and all those unhappy Ebay users are completely wrong. Now that's an ego!

Can't wait for Wednesday's earnings call. I listened to last quarter's and all JD and the others could talk about was PayPal, PayPal, and PayPal.  Obviously, they don't let anyone in who might ask tough questions.

I'm sure we are going to hear again how JD is heroically turning Ebay marketplace around and how PayPal is growing fast.  He won't be mentioning any of those PayPal holds though. I wonder if the increased holds mean PayPal isn't growing much anymore, and they had to beef up the revenue numbers by doing that. Also, maybe PayPal will release the holds after the earnings have been reported.

bwa ha. I'm not a big CEO--I'm running a retail store that's on the edge at times of going down the tubes, so I realize that some of the changes being brought in might not be popular with folks...staff or otherwise. It's making changes.

Regardless, while my bailiwick isn't the size of eBay, I think I"m doing a better job.

Not! lol

Even after 13 years of buying on ebay (10 of those selling as well, left 2 years ago), I purchased a gift for a friend on AMAZON last week.

I used to HATE Amazon because it loaded sooooo slowly (all of the ads and bs), so it's pretty bad when even I go there to buy something, BEFORE I even think about suffering the ebay nightmare! lol

RIP ebay.

Great job Meg, you idiot.

Is there a difference between eBay MBA's  and snake oil salesmen? Both operate on greed, are slimy and would sell their soul to make a buck. It's all stealing and beating up on the innocent.

I keep going back and forth wondering if JD & co. are evil or just incredibly blind stupid.

Friends, I can't tell you how proud I am to have played a part in the demise of eBay's numbers in the 4th quarter.  I had very few Unique Visitors in my eBay store. My fixed price items were comatose. My auctions were moribund. December was Grinch time, and we all know who the Grinch was.

Well, now the numbers are going to start to tumble out and we will see the beginning, no, the middle of the end for the late, great eBay.

So, I'm proud, but sad, because its like losing a friend you once loved but no longer can recognize.

Why are such small numbers being included in ebay surveys and paypal studies recently?
J.P. Morgan surveyed  only 13 eBay PowerSellers? A recent paypal study only included 8 merchants!!!

If that's all it takes to provide useful data let ebay try this on for size. Here are results from a current survey with far, far more responses than the ebay and paypal studies combined. Question and results:
Does ebay lie - 88.6% said yes. 11.4% said they didn't know. Nobody said No!!!!!
Is ebay honest 88.8% said no. 3.8% had no opinion and 7.5% said absolutely.

A very large percentage of people think ebay lies and ebay is not honest.
Promise your customers you will not make any change during the holiday season to sucker them into listing then make a big change.
Use your control over paypal to grab customers money.

Why is Amazon stomping ebay? Even Baby Huey can answer that.

Bonanzle, iOffer, Alibris, Biblio etc. all continue to grow with every second of every day that ebay ruins sellers, lies to users, screws paypalers. Doesn't take einstein to figure it out. ebay + paypal= slow death squared.

The eBay marketplaces are continuing their journey down the toilet, period! And undoubtedly that will be reaffirmed, once again, on Wednesday. Well done John!

Let me then cut straight to the chase with a simple statement from a regular eBay user’s point of view: eBay (aka “the eBafia”) is a criminal organization!

How could that be, you ask? Well, with some effort and some multi-auction analysis, it can be very clearly demonstrated (see the below link) that shill bidding fraud by unscrupulous professional sellers, at least on nominal-start auctions, is rampant on eBay auctions, and the executives “in the know” at eBay, unless they are actually as stupid as they apparently think all we simple consumers are, cannot but be aware of that criminal activity. And yet they do nothing proactive nor truly effective to prevent such criminal activity—indeed, they have done the very opposite, they have introduced a non-unique masking of bidding IDs, which serves no material purpose other than to further obscure such criminal activity and aid and abet said unscrupulous sellers to, by fraudulent means, maximize their sale prices, thus maximizing eBay’s FVF. (It’s even worse in the UK, where buyers have got absolutely no chance of detecting the unscrupulous professional sellers that infest eBay auctions.)

It’s called “criminal facilitation” and, in most civilized countries, anyone who knowingly facilitates such criminal activity is also considered to be a criminal. It’s as simple as that! Is it any wonder that buyers are staying away and this business is now going down the toilet?

PayPal
is a banking-type service, a service that would be more competently carried out under the auspices of the banking community via their credit card company partners. Without the bankers’ knowledge of the entities involved in the transactions, PayPal will always be handicapped—even more so while under the management of such incompetents as those who currently control eBay.

The head turkey at eBay, “Noise” Donahoe, will occasionally talk of the possibility of selling off PayPal because he is just barely smart enough to know that when the major credit card companies do get off their butts and introduce a like card/terminal-less payments system to complement their credit card system, they will do it properly, and the “clunky” PayPal will then sink like a stone—other than, possibly, on what is by then left of the Donahoe-ever-shrinking eBay marketplace.

From an ex buyer’s point of view, an introduction to an introduction to the full sad story at
