eBay CEO Talks about Core Values: Auctions Are Not a Religion

By: Ina Steiner

I  videotaped a few parts of eBay CEO John Donahoe's keynote address at the Shop.org Summit, which wrapped up on Wednesday afternoon and was chock-full of news and information relating to ecommerce. John's keynote address covered a lot of ground - auctions, PayPal, Skype, China, eBay's core values, along with his message to attendees that they should not fear that eBay is a retailer.

Of special interest to AuctionBytes readers is this clip in which John discusses eBay's core values and thoughts about auctions. eBay exists to create an opportunity for others, so they and eBay can have an impact on the world, and he said that he cares that users depend on eBay.

I thought it was interesting when he said, "We thought auctions was a religion. Auctions are nothing more than a format." This is a rather amazing statement for the head of eBay to say, given that auctions are such an important differentiator from other ecommerce players in a hyper-competitive arena.

There's another video clip in one of today's AuctionBytes Newsflash articles in which John did not explain why if Skype is such a great communications tool, it was unsuccessful on eBay as a communications tool. But of course, he failed to say that eBay did not allow sellers to fully use Skype on eBay. It was only open to a few categories, likely because eBay feared sellers would take transactions off-site to avoid fees.

There's one more video clip, you can view it on YouTube - it shows John taking his own video of himself during his presentation at Shop.org.

"eBay exists to create an opportunity for others, so they and eBay can have an impact on the world"

Impact on the world? Yikes. Get over yourself.

I'm just trying to eke out a living while dealing with eBay's constant tinkering.

"we exist to create opportunities for others"

OH MY GOD! How can he even sit there with a straight face and spew such BU11SH1T, as they MURDER small sellers and romance any and all giant corporations that are sleezy and hurtin' enough to slip into bed with them!

They think of NO ONE but themselves and their own GREED!

Yes they care and care deeply about their customers and they are heartbroken when that half a percent satisfaction rate infraction totally shuts them down and disrupts their businesses.

No worries 99.9% of the buyers were happy with their transaction, it's that tiny half a percent that matters most. Of course it also saves our company from giving any discounts which in turn will add just that little extra to our bottom line.

He forgot to mention how great it is collecting money from those precious sellers and giving them nothing in return. Why no mention of how he manipulates each and every one of those special beloved sellers.

Sure sellers feel confident putting hundreds of thousands of dollars on the line when the threshold for error is .50%

He should bend over drop his pants and talk from his caboose because he looks like one every time he speaks.

Donahoe is woefully inadequate when he speaks of ebay and its sellers - you can actually see his nose grow!  We all know what he's doing - he's as transparent as glass (or should I say glassdoor?)LOL

I'm sure of one thing - if and when Ebay puts Paypal up for sale you know they're not far from having the lights shut off due to nonpayment!  Paypal is just about all that's keeping Ebay afloat right now.

Every single time Donahoe's lips move in a discussion of eBay he makes it more and more apparent that he has been clueless from day one.

From the first salvo against small sellers with his insulting "noise" comment it has been obvious that the $17 million dollar man had no understanding of how eBay worked or what made it so successful.

With every speech, comment and remark JD makes, it becomes more and more obvious he has no idea why his efforts have resulted only in declining sales.

He keeps saying how his efforts are restoring buyer confidence and bringing buyers back to the marketplace, however, thus far the quarterly statements for eBay marketplaces tell quite a different story.

When will eBay's board of directors wake up to the fact that Donahoe is a complete and total failure?

Donahoe has single handedly turned this company into a laughingstock.

Left to his own devices, Donahoe's only success will be the fact that he personally engineered the biggest failure in Internet history.

hmmm ebays message to attendees that they should not fear ebay as a retailer? That means if they saw that ebay was a retailer they might clobber ebay. Hmmm.

That religion JD is talking about is because he and this company came from the bowels of Bain. Well suited to brainwash people

Jesus is telling me to send you right back to hell John Donahue. Shopping as a religion. Maybe we should start calling this Johnstown. Take your self-righteous kool-aid spewing Peoples Temple Agricultural Project on out of here. No one needs some moonie running a corporation

Seriously, this is back chilling. The guy is mental. He's exhibiting the same psychological profile as cult leaders. Go look it up. You know who else thought it was really great to create their own world and have followers chanting his mantra? Charles Manson!! and at least he's behind bars. You're out on the streets man!

This guy is truly full of himself. He can take the video home and watch it over and over. He’s a one man fan club.

Yes. But they usually do that with call girls and some bizarro costume. All we need is a mashup with some appropriate vocalizing of oooh aaahhh oohhhh. I think we are learning a little TMI about John Donahoe. No wonder they need to buy Craiglist, they dont want us to find out what kind of personal ads execs have been posting.

How stupid is he for even saying he'd think about spinning off paypal?

How in the world wouldn't an online payment platform ever not be compatible with an online marketplace owned by the same company?
What could paypal possibly do better without ebay? He sounds like he's talking about a Siamese twin that's dragging the others 3,000 pound head around and it'd becoming a problem.

I bet it makes the folks working paypal feel real confident in their futures!

This guy is a lunatic. If I worked at ebay I really would be nervous with him in the same building. He's got all the hallmarks of one of those people that walks in with a gun and shoots everyone at random.

He's really really creepy. He's got dead eyes too, like a wicked blank stare. Could just be the dumb but I get bad vibes looking at him.
He's so Hanibal Lecter like!

He will be in the news someday for something other than just destroying ebay.

I have attended alot of conferences, specifically to tape certain people for internal office presentations and I just have to comment the the video of JD taping himself is on of the strangest things I have ever seen.

Sadly, it did nothing but reinforce just how far eBay has fallen and in the final pan of the audience, their bored looks and the light smattering of polite applause, said it all.

Ladies and gentlemen, introducing John "The Pimp" Donahoe.  He's pimping sellers and he's getting off on it from the looks of these clips.

This guy is truly vile.  He doesn't even believe his own words when he talks judging from the smirk he makes in the clips whenever he talks about "customers".

eBay will be dismantled.  PayPal will be sold off, then eBay.  Hopefully, someone with enough brains will step up and make it what people want it to be again though it seems like a real gamble considering just how much "The Pimp" trashed eBay as a brand.
