eBay Publishes September Changes ahead of Announcement

By: Ina Steiner

As we reported last week and in yesterday's AuctionBytes Update newsletter, eBay is introducing major changes to its marketplace including a new seller responsibilities policy called Selling Practices, and it will revamp its PowerSeller program with the introduction of a Top Rated Seller designation and badge. eBay published the changes to its website overnight, and eBay will be making an announcement on the Announcement Board later today.

eBay will give sellers an 8-month transition period as it shifts the PowerSeller discount structure and begins to measure sellers on  their rate of low DSRs - specifically 1s and 2s. Beginning in April 2010, there will be a new structure for PowerSeller Final Value Fee discounts: 20% for eBay Top-rated sellers and 5% for all other PowerSellers. (Top-rated sellers will be able to get their discounts beginning in October.)

eBay will also introduce a new Seller Dashboard in September that includes a Search Visibility tool that displays recent sales and impression range for all of a seller's listings

eBay will discontinue most optional, fee-based listing features. When sellers purchase Featured First (which will only be available to Top Rated sellers) or Bold along with International Site Visibility, these features will be displayed only on the site of purchase to ensure that domestic listings get top visibility.

eBay will introduce a new streamlined Unpaid Item process with an auto-option with no negative feedback and will expand the dispute resolution for buyer claims it introduced in April 2009, with the number of buyers and sellers who see it is gradually increasing with a goal of completing the changeover before the holiday 2009 selling season. Once complete, the new on-eBay resolution process, backed by eBay Customer Support, will be the primary resource for buyers who are unable to resolve disputes directly with eBay sellers.

Other changes include:

For all Auction-style items listed on or after October 1, the Buy It Now price will have to be at least 10% more than the auction start price.

Optional buyer charges for shipping insurance no longer allowed.

My Messages and post-transaction emails changes, including: buyer identity will be kept anonymous until after the sale is complete.

Sellers will be able to upload tracking and delivery confirmation numbers for more carriers. Buyers will see a message next to sellers' handling time on the item page and will see tracking information and stated delivery time right in the Feedback and dispute resolution flows. For transactions with free shipping, there will be clear messaging in the Feedback flow encouraging buyers to leave a 5 DSR for shipping and handling charges. No shipping DSRs with local pickup.

Selling Manager Applications will be available in August for free trial.

The new eBay Top-rated seller badge will be displayed on sellers' item pages and other member profile pages, and eBay will begin testing the badge in search results pages. The current PowerSeller icon will no longer be displayed on buyer-facing pages like the item page and other member profile pages, but will continue to be displayed in My eBay, Selling Manager and Selling Manager Pro.

See all the changes about eBay's forthcoming changes on its website, and keep an eye out for eBay's official announcement on the eBay Announcement Board.

Woah! I guess they wanted us to have some summer reading!

The insurance part stinks. I sell one of a kind items - guess I'll be raising my starting prices.

Top rated seller?

Do you have to be a power seller to being considered a top rated seller?

Or...is top rated sellers based on DSRs only?

Ina, read the part about the UPI closer. It says"With the automated process, buyers won't be permitted to leave Feedback when a claim is open." I assume this means the buyer will be permitted to leave feedback after the claim is closed

never understood why ebay hates its sellers so much. How about BUYER's responsible?
Let's see, i shipped 42 packages today 200.00 in postal costs, plus time, gas, fees(of course), supplies, and other costs. So i think i made almost 1.00 not sure.

"only domestic DSRs count"

= devious way to remove PS discounts from 100% exporting sellers like us.

:(

Without fail, every time eBay changes their policies... it's the same as RAISING FEES for small sellers. Yes... lowering the discounts for "ordinary" lower-volume PowerSellers IS indeed a fee increase. Raising the qualifying DSR score for PowerSellers is also a fee increase. ~ They're treating us like DIRT... and by "dirt" I mean "s--t".

Refined Draconian, distilling control and abuse to sellers like the the making of fine wine. EBay doesn't care about buyers. It's just the platform available to justify turning the thumbscrews another notch on sellers.

Ha ha! More marginalized Power Sellers! How does it feel to see the ''preferred sellers'' drink from the Power Sellers Only water fountain?

At least you can see your POWER SELLER ICON only on your Selling Manager Pro (extra fee required) or your My eBay Page (icon MIA.)

3 QUESTIONS eBay SELLERS NEED TO ASK THEMSELVES:

1. Is it a wise investment of your time?
2. How much do you earn an hour?
3. ''Are we having fun yet?''

Well Seller, are you?

All I can say is "I'm glad I left ebay 3 years ago".  Ebay doesn't want anything to do with the small seller anymore.

As others said, whenever eBay creates or changes a policy, it means more money for eBay and more hassle for the seller (and expense).

There is always some window dressing which may or may not improve things for sellers, but generally...it incentivizes sellers to leave eBay.

Fortunately I'm still making enough bank each month to put up with it all, but I can see a day when that won't be the case.

Now we are expected to give free shipping and free insurance? I sell high end pieces that I have a considerable investment in already...now I am expected to give more of my small profit away? Meanwhile customers are disappearing thanks to site mismanagement. Great....and we are suppose to welcome these changes as improvements.  I seriously think NOT.

I would guess you will see more high quality items leaving the site as has been happening for the past 2 years.  Pretty soon the only items left here will be new, overpriced or just plain junk.

I forgot... the TMZ thing. Where were the AuctionBytes predictions way off course? TMZ was awfully right about Michael Jackson, weren't they?

Griff had a snit on his Propaganda show and he and Johnny wouldn't discuss ze verbotton topics because it wasn't on their time-table.

John Donnaho did the hot tub routine with Griff. Really, these are the people in charge while Rome burns.

AGAIN:

HOW DO WE TELL IF WE ARE CASUAL??

When are they going to let us know if we have to quit doing this, and go look for another job?

Seriously, they already get 50% of my take, if you include pay-pal's fees.

I cannot, and will not pay them another 15-20%.

If I do that, I will make about 1.12 an hour.

Like Ed said, it doesn't make sense when you divide it into the hours worked.

So how do we find out what the criteria is for casual versus Top Rated?

Or is that a secret, so they are not only going to put me out of work effectively, but at a moment's notice.

I sure am glad I have something else lined up!!

When Johnny Don took over in Jan. 2008 I read everyone saying he was trying to make the smaller to medium sellers go away, he did not want them no more. I did not believe it, but now I do - I used sell about $100,000 worth of stuff a year, now I get the 20% discount, raised search standing and best Match has KILLED my profits ! I sell $39,000 worth of stuff, so Best Match has ruined me, and I get the raised @

Best Match is the most HORRIBLE thing ever ! And I got the raised search standing ! I called ebay and told them I got RAISED search and my sales have all but evaporated compared to before, I asked ''How can a new seller want to sell here ?'' I mean 11 year Veterans have no incentive with 10,000 plus feedbacks ! I am sure these new rules will finish me off for good, I am disabled and eBay was a God send, then Johnny Don ruined it for me and countless others, very sad. We are people who had mouths to feed, worked for a decade to build up what we were, then your ''DISRUPTIVE'' innovation DISRUPTED a family's living for good ! While Johnny Donn gets paid millions to ruin other peoples financial lives after 11 years of hard work.

I can't believe he did this to hundreds of thousands if not millions in favor of the Big Boy warehouses sellers. I see the rich big boys ( Johnny Donn ) only caters to the rich, and us "NOISE SMALL SELLERS" can go drop off a cliff, after 11 years of hard work thinking you had a living for your children, money for your mortgage. Peace to all, and best of luck to all you medium and small sellers, I think Johnny Don sunk most of us for good this time - Sincerely, SO SO SAD

@ dcsbodyjewelry ----
I heard to be a Top Rated seller, you must carry DSR's of 4.9 to 5 in all Four Categories, or your not Top Rated, and you cannot use Feature First to put your item at the top

SJM, I want some of whatever you're smoking . . . although I really think you were being sarcastic.  :)

Glad I'm still boycotting.
