eBay Favors Select Retailers, Sellers Abuzz over Ideeli

By: Ina Steiner

Sponsored Link

eBay sent emails to users on Thursday promoting a 2-day "sales event" for Cole Haan items from eBay seller ideeli. The email was part of a campaign for eBay's new "Fashion Deals" feature, somewhat similar to its Daily Deals. Just how did ideeli - a brand new seller with 22 feedback - get such great placement on eBay?

eBay's increasingly looking to put the fun back into shopping on its site, but in a way that would be unrecognizable to shoppers who hadn't visited the site in the last several years. Rather than promoting auctions and unique items, eBay is instead promoting bargain deals. Is it a strategy that can work for eBay, and where does it leave smaller sellers?

ideeli is a shopping web site, it might be an advertising thing? So it's not like they are a "normal" user with a 22 feedback.

Ideeli is a competitor of the Rue La La's of the world--and they do not seem to be doing well.  Guess they decided to try this.  I don't know why eBay would agree to let Ideeli take shoppers off the site.

Ugly and very expensive shoes in my opinion.

The ebay that we knew and loved is gone, dead and impossible to revive because by the time they come to their senses, the good sellers will be long gone and happily making their living elsewhere!

To answer your question it leaves small and even mid-size sellers out of the equation.  Those who haven't left ebay yet will leave in the near future or go broke.

Ebay has no strategy.  They took a shot at being like Amazon, then Overstock, then Costco.  Now it's something else and nothing seems to stick.

A year from now you will be writing about a lot of other selling sites because no one will care much about ebay anymore.

Thanks so much Ina for covering this.  Ebay needs this kind of exposure - sellers need to know this so they can keep on spreading the truth about Ebay.

In this economy I doubt ideeli is going to make much headway on Ebay...even with top exposure.  I looked at their things - there aren't enough rich vain women on Ebay to make this endeavor a success ;-)

Someone posted on your previous blog that they Ideeli had a negative feedback removed. Doesn't surprise me that eBay would remove a negative. They allow some of their employee's to accept paper payments even when listing in categories where it is not allowed and doing so while they even state they are employee's. Here is the link to one of eBay's finest.....

erid=all.business&sort=3&page=20&rows=50&since=-1&rdir=0

Both
are against their policy for regular sellers. But I guess their employee's get preferential treatment as well as up and coming diamond sellers.

Something strange.  I went back and checked their listings for the past 15 days.  I counted about 50 plus or minus sales out of over 4,000 listings.  The ones that I checked that weren't sold stated this:

"The seller ended this listing early because the item is no longer available for sale.

This item or one like it has been relisted."

I think they  they just relist when the sale ends. Check out the starting date on some of these and the ending date. Some of these listngs started back on 2006 and earlier yet they are active and running listings. We reported them to eBay as many others have I am sure.

We get the same bot answer from eBay go to the link and you can report up to ten listings. Problem is this person has hundreds. One thing for sure is they are listing in categories not allowed.

How interesting. Why would a retailer try and sell nicer handbags on ebay?  Designer purses are prime targets for scammers who pose as buyers, pay with paypal, claim a false SNAD, ship back a fake purse as a return, keep the real purse and get their money back.   Why would a regular retailer of new merchandise want to deal with the hassle of ebay as a venue given all of the problematic scam buyer behavior and site problems if their other channels are working well?

I wonder whether Cole Haan cares that their brand is figuring so prominently on ebay's main page.  Some brand owners seem reluctant to be closely associated with the ebay brand.  If the ebay corporation is billing itself as a liquidator, then wouldn't premium brands would be diluted if they appeared too prominently there (such as on the main page)? Why would anyone pay full retail at a nice department store for a brand if the same item will turn up on ebay as a (cheesy) daily deal?

They're putting an F word back into shopping alright, but that F word isn't shopping.

Duh, I blew my own punchline!

That should read:

So, they had 95.5 rating this morning and 100 percent now with 5.0 stars!  Wow! from what I'm reading this was caught by several people and I would doubt a screenshot will pop up before long.  Ebay is now proved to be a glaring liar since they bragged they treat diamond sellers the same...yeah LOL  Really sleazy!

A few odds and ends:

* The vast majority of the 4,000 plus completed items were test auctions, so their sell-thru rate is better than it looks.

* They're running 3 day Buy It Now's, which would be highly ranked in Best Match even if they weren't given all this extra help by eBay.  Their listings count both as "newly listed" AND "ending soon" at the same time.

* It looks like they sold about 600 items in the first day, judging by their feedback left.

* The "22" feedback are somewhat suspicious.  For instance, one was for a $1.50 best offer on a $400 item.

* According to the listings, the seller has a 10 day turnaround time, so I'm not sure the 5.0's are going to last.

Not mentioned here yet, but most disturbing of all, is ideeli's heavy promotion of it's off-ebay site, including a link to sign up for it's off-ebay newsletter.
Not that I fault ideeli for doing so...it's good business and very smart of them to negotiate that concession with management.
What gets me is this is against policy for the rest of us!  Shame shame on eBay.  It's one thing to give great banners and placement to a seller coming in with big capital, and quite another to stack the deck against the rest of us!
