Can Ecommerce Get Social with Facebook?

By: Ina Steiner

Sponsored Link

Facebook is starting to look like a marketplace, with a classifieds platform powered by Oodle and a new payment service being tested. (See today's AuctionBytes Newsflash article.)

Could Facebook give eBay a run for the money? There are lots of challenges to overcome, but with so many developers eager to try and take advantage of Facebook's popularity, they could do much of the legwork for the young company. (eBay let its users and developers do much of the development and innovating on its platform in its early days.)

What are the challenges for online sellers and retailers, and will they jump on the bandwagon? Facebook can certainly learn a lot of lessons from eBay, Amazon and Craiglist.

No, it would be too soon. Facebook needs to get Sponsored and online ads right before they try to mingle with tangible goods & services. There are also some creepy aspects, like lack of privacy, when you mix social media with ecommerce. Facebook users will not be as true if s/he realizes their content is being used against them. Some don't mind ads, but many do not want it in their space.

I have seen various complaints from facebook users about the nature of some ads that appear though I don't recall ever seeing the ads complained about (something about offers for women to sell their eggs ???)  The single box for sponsored ads doesn't bother me and I like the fact that I can "like" or "dislike" an ad (though when I 'dislike' an ad, I am immediately shown another ad that is usually worse than the first).

I think too many ads would detract from the site, especially it they slowed site performance. There probably are some ecommerce opportunities for facebook, but they would have to tread carefully so as not to turn off major groups of users.

My answer to the question is ''YES''. I donot want when I am in Facebook, my experience should change, that may dilute the idea of social network. After facebook release the Streams, its easier for other ecommerce site to be social. The good example is http://www.shonics.com. You can bring there your facebook friends and shop together. While shopping you get opinion at real time from your facebook friends.I think this important to ecommerce sites to become social.

People navigating on Facebook don't have the buying intention in mind, try an ad campaign there, track the conversion and you will see a new method of wasting money. Currently the targeting elements are only gender and age, additional keyword targeting will reduce your potential add viewers to just a couple of thousands, but that's just my experience.

Ebay has nothing to worry about.

Facebook like Bonanzle will take years to even catch up to ebay auction listings. Doesn't matter Ebay is still the King. Right wrong or indifferent that is where the buyers are.

To those that say sales are down on ebay. Well just maybe you have out priced yourself or maybe you are gouging on shipping.

"To those that say sales are down on ebay. Well just maybe you have out priced yourself or maybe you are gouging on shipping."

Ridiculous! Proof, please.

Apparently you don't read what others have posted here about all time low prices and 'FREE' shipping.

The FACTS are, voodoo troll, that page views are down, unique visitors are down, and sales are down -- not becuase sellers are greedy idiots as you imply but because ebay can no longer generate enough traffic.

The brand ebaY has become synonymous with rampant executive greed and dishonesty, buyer and seller fraud, the world's largest venue for stolen goods, non existent customer service, and member abuse.

And now The HO is going add more often defective and cheap Chinese garbage to the above list.

Doesn't sound like a long term success model to me.

This is really the direction things are heading. Industry experts are predicting a ''social web'' where all things online are transferable.

You'll be able to carry with you your information, from site to site blurring the divisions. Sites like netSpray.com are bridging the gap to the future. Content is already being made transferable. In the future it won't be about ''where'' you are on the Internet, it'll only be about what you want to be doing. Content will come to you.

Facebook has to get a LOT easier to understand and have a LOT more explanation as to what it does and how we can use the site.  Most of the people I know have thrown up their hands and are out of there.  I find it totally confusing with a lot of kind of childish games going on and bits and pieces of conversations that seem to go nowhere.

Right on again!  I only have 4 items listed at present - all are ready to roll off tomorrow.  There is only 1 bid among the 4 and I feel fortunate to get that - none of these listings has more then SEVEN views!  No...the traffic is NOT there and its NOT the economy.  Even Overstock is beating them out 10 to 1!!!!  At this point I just gotta say where does Ebay get off gouging sellers....for WHAT???  Obviously we all know what Ebay hasn't yet seemed to grasp - they are dangerously low on traffic!

Ebay destroyed Ebay.
Any troll from Ebay can say anything they want, but they are lying. Best Match & buyers abusing sellers thanks to Donuthead's unfair feedback plan have destroyed Ebay.
Explain this, troll:
I have one item, I used to only sell on Ebay, and sold hundreds a year. Until 2009. 10 years, same item, consistent sales. Not anymore. Ebay now fraudulently lists an out of country seller with "free shipping" as first 2 pages in my category.
Clicking their listing shows shipping is $8 additional. NOT FREE. Numerous reports did no good. They had a 98.something F/b 4.3 in 2 categories, 4.2 in another, and numerous negs. I have 20,000+ pos f/b, 4.7 lowest DSR S&H 4.9 in other 3 cat,
ship for $4.50, from a USA address. Thanks to Ebay fraud, My items show up on 3rd-4th page at best in search, and they take no action to the crook abusing the system. So now, I sell elsewhere. My top item on Bonanzle & Ecrater has become this thing I can't even get looked at, thanks to Ebay's crummy search. Why are my sales of the exact same item better on every other site than Ebay? It's not the economy, not the price, just Ebay's flawed, fraudulent search. Amazon is kicking Ebay's butt too, 100 items listed, 25 sold. Ebay, 500 listed, so far 7 sold. So Hoodoo Voodoo, quit lying, pallie.

I have tried Bonanzle, Ecrater with limited success. Total between the 2 for the past year about 7 sales.
My eBay sales on the other hand are rocking and I really do not know why? May was the best May I have ever had, my sales up 200% from last May, I am not joking.  The fees are a little steep, but you know the old saying you got to spend money to make money. I guess is true. They have the traffic (at least for me) Between Pay Pal and eBay they get about 15% - 18% in total fees from me. I figure it is the cost of doing business.

My traffic is also sky high. I would say triple from last year.

So for me so far the changes at eBay are working. But I also sell a very unique product. I really think this helps me with exposure.
I would welcome a new selling venue if it worked. In the mean time I can not waste my time listing on a site that has limited results.

Facebook is just as poorly designed as ebay is now. Both could use some professional guidance in their site programming that actually works.

That being said, I'm sure that facebook will have another small share of the seller market that ebay continues to lose.

Cumulatively, ALL of the sites that have taken the bulk of individual ebay sellers, combined, would be a force to contend with. There should be an online seller's organization for all BUT ebay to join and be a member of!LOL!

There are other options besides ebay and facebook where you can have the social and selling platform all rolled into one.
Try sinking your blood, sweat and tears into Bonanzle. What do you get:  a free booth, free/never expire listings,4 item pictures for free, social networking forums, automatic google search feeds for your products and very low selling fees.  You should consider checking out Bonanzle.

There needs to be a "specific" search site just for the top 20 antiques/collectibles selling sites. Excluding ebay and Amazon!LOL! It should be a minimal paid membership kind of thing for each selling venue enrolled in it. That way it could remain exclusive and keep out the big retailers and cheap importers.

I'm not sure about this.  There are an enormous amount of teens on the site, and that kind of commercialization might cause the parents to pull WAY back in terms of supervision!  I see whole families intermingling and this would likely completely change the marketability!  And THESE are the parents that DO care!

In regards to ebay.

Um, livings ARE being made elsewhere.  I am proof of that.  Between Etsy and Amazon, I pay the bills.  To state otherwise is pure propaganda.

Junk is junk is junk.  I don't sell junk.  Most folks don't set out looking for junk.  If they want a plain blue tank top, sure, get it cheap on ebay.  Want something unique and special?  They'll got to Etsy.

I've stopped back at a few ''old'' friends who preferred to trudge in the sludge at ebay rather than make a change, and honestly, none are making a profit.  Or, very little.  Selling books and maybe making 50 cents cleared to a dollar each listing?  Come on, is it worth it?  And another is a power seller that I guarantee, knowing the merchandise she is selling, is NOT making a profit and indeed, is PAYING for the privilege of the power seller stigmata.  I mean, title.

There is something dreadfully and SADLY wrong with this picture.  It is very mentally unhealthy.
