eBay Announcement Expected on Tuesday

By: Ina Steiner

Sponsored Link

eBay is expected to make its long-awaited announcement on Tuesday. eBay said it would only make two major announcements affecting sellers this year: April and July, for implementation in June and September.

Sellers criticized eBay for the amount and frequency of changes made last year. At a super-secret meeting earlier this year, eBay told a small group of top sellers it would limit major announcements going forward.

eBay told the top sellers it was moving to a twice yearly product release cycle: any product or policy change that would significantly disrupt a seller's business (i.e. a change that could break their templates) would happen in either the spring or fall. eBay said it would give 60 days advance notice to help sellers prepare for the changes. However, it said it would continue to roll out new products and changes to the buyer interface at any time.

We'll update this post as we learn more.

I have a strong suspicion that ebay will announce near free listings across the site for crtain sleers (ie PowerSellers). Just a hunch.

If not, how else can they hope to end their market share slide and retain their exclusive seller base?

The current fixed price model is not working with the diamond/power sellers. STR's are non existent based on their listing amounts. Negative feedbacks are way up for the items they do sell and receive a DSR rating for and should be considered totally unacceptable.

If they continue this policy for certain power sellers then where do they expect to recoup that lost revenue from? Higher fees for smaller sellers I expect. At any rate John Donahoe's vision is not working. I think it is best for the shareholders and BOD to give him 3 or 4 more years to try to get it right. (Snicker)

Are they going to level the vaunted playing field, and give joe average seller a fair chance? Are they going to reset worst match so regular sellers actually receive something for their wasted fees?

Or are they going to continue to destroy ebay for the doggy diamonds, you know, those "great" sellers that manage a .02% STR even with EVERYTHING in their favor, but STILL get thousands of negs every month?

How about just 1 seller friendly announcement? The last year we've been bent over, Snaded over, overcharged for dwindling market, 1.5 million less page views in a year, 18% lower sales value since November, and these greedy maricons will do nothing to help. EBay wants you to maintain a 90% perfect record, when their customer satisfaction hasn't reached 75% in years. Maybe the announcement is "the new CSR reps Griff is training" LOL Ebay, go eat an Easter Egg!

A couple of weeks ago, ebay asked me to participate in another one of their surveys.

As has been discussed on the BrewsNews blog, this survey pertained to seller return policies.

I was asked who I thought should pay for returns, buyer or seller.

Another question instructed me to rank the reasons why buyers return items. I was appalled by the fact that EVERY reason I was given had to with seller error or seller fraud. Not one reason had to do with buyer fraud, buyer error, etc. Not one! Ebay must believe that all returns are due to bad sellers or bad seller policies to have presented such a clearly one sided, heavily biased, unscientific survey.

After reading that question, I closed the window and stopped taking their bogus survey. The choices in nearly question were unfairly manipulated and geared toward obtaining the predetermined answers ebay wants to get to justify the shipping policy changes they decided to make several months ago.

I expect to see more capped shipping charges in order to force "free" shipping, seller paid return shipping which will cause even more returns, and a general overhaul in ebay shipping policies forced down the throats of sellers.

All this while ebay does their level best to bury the listings of sellers of unique, high quality items who have perfect feedback and star ratings in favor of those selling large quantities of cheap, deliberately misrepresented Pacific Rim junk.

The point is that ebay apparently makes decisions and then uses loaded surveys to announce that sellers "asked" for or "approved" of the changes ebay had already decided to make well in advance of the survey.

Not surprised by the last post, Ebay are scum, and will lie, cheat and steal to get over on the sellers, it's just business, man.

I would think an extra pair of underwear and a lot of laundry soap would be a good thing to have on hand Tuesday.

Ebay is sinking faster than Donna Hole can bail. OOps forgot he will use his parachute to get of the ship.

Logic and common sense tell me they should be making an announcement of rescinding some of their ridiculous new policies that are so anti-seller....BUT knowing their management team the way I do I doubt it.  Somehow these mental giants still think the ball is in their corner.  They need to wake up and look around - with each passing day fewer and fewer sellers give one whit about them and their "announcements".  I'am certainly not on the edge of my seat anymore!

Gordon, don't blame ya, the goons running ebay have a hard time telling something from Shinola. These dumbbells spent Billions on something, and DIDN'T EVEN HAVE SENSE ENOUGH TO BUY THE KEY PATENT! Go check out Ina's other post about where to get started online, theres a bunch of great sites where you can sell for free or almost and be your own boss, without some donkey's behind trying to take 20-30% of YOUR MONEY! Bonanzle rules, see you on Ecrater!!! Die Ebay Die!

I really don't understand all of these announcements announcing a forthcoming annoucement.  IMO, this is too much unnecessary drama preceeding an announcement - too much ''sound and fury signifying nothing.''  IMO, ebay management is taking itself too seriously - just make the announcement already.

Whatever it will be I doubt it will be good news. I agree it may likely have something to to with fixed price or free shipping, possibly another "fee reduction"
(Be ready to flood popular video sites with lots of noisy new movies. Donahoe &  crew love them. LOL)

The next round of changes should be just ahead of the Holiday season then I take it?

Not to change subjects, but maybe I was asleep, what was the major announcement that was mentioned here?

Does it seem to anyone else that ebay is stringing everyone along when they make all these statements, including, for instance, the Analyst Day thing about looking forward to 2012 when they  can't even predict 2009 to any degree?

1. Sellers will no longer be able to complain for any reason.
2. No more blocking bad buyers that don't pay, leave negative feedback, or for any reason.
3. All fees are paid up front before listing is posted.
4. And screw the sellers if you don't like IT.

Quick guess on Tuesday's announcement, fwiw:

1. Switch to category pages in media category, perhaps electronics and cameras as well

2. Rejiggering the fee structure in an attempt to

a) force more free shipping
b) force seller-paid returns
c) loudly proclaim a fee "decrease" while increasing the fees, as if all we sellers were too stupid to run the numbers.

They will probably RAISE the DSRs you need to get any discounts because coaching has raised the DSRs higher than they expected them to be. They won't fix the stupid shipping DSR that punishes cross-border trade.

3. Quiet backpedaling on Best Match (it will still be called "Best Match" but will do less and less) in an attempt to get eBay search to actually work again.

I find it scary when ebay starts sending out the surveys. If they are asking people who should pay for return shipping, then that change will be coming sooner than later and I can promise you it will be the seller that will pay.

As soon as a buyer is allowed to return an item for whatever reason they choose and I have to pay for that return is the day I close up shop on ebay.

How many more good sellers can Ebay afford to lose? If they put out a stinker announcement that pi$$es off sellers and cheats them even more than they already are, they'll lose thousands more. Sellers have had it. Enough Ebay. We hate you.

No 1, I remember when INA used to allow and almost ask for derisive comments and articles. That she has chosen to ignore these post are defacto proof that, she too is scared or bought off.

Perhaps no one big player will do it but it looks like plenty of smaller auction type sites will be the demise of eBay and their crooked strong arm ways
