eBay Glitch Shows Free International Shipping

By: Ina Steiner

Sponsored Link

eBay warned members about a glitch that caused some search results to display free international shipping even when shipping charges had been specified by the seller. At one o'clock, eBay thought the problem was isolated to the shipping costs to Canada. Three hours later, it said the problem was affecting shipping costs to other countries, not just Canada, "for some items."

If you offer international shipping, be sure your bidders and buyers are aware of the glitch. This has the potential to be a serious problem as it can affect a seller's feedback.

And sellers who are not made aware of the problem may think a buyer is trying to con them if they said they saw their items offering free shipping! The natural tensions between buyer and seller are made worse with glitches. I applaud eBay for communicating the problem on the Announcement Board this time.

Update: eBay announced on April 6, 2009 at 5:27 pm Pacific that it had corrected the problem.

How long was the glitch happening before eBay fessed up?  It is usually a couple days after they have been informed for hundreds of sellers there is a problem and they can no longer hide their continuous ongoing glitch.  Pathetic!

The affected people (buyers & sellers) will pay for eBay's poor system as usual and eBay will just sit there as though nothing ever happened.  Sellers will either lose money paying shipping to avoid an upset buyer or will be hit with the feedback wrath.  All thanks to eBay's constant unacceptably poor piece of junk system.

I am so glad to be out of that prison!

In typical eBay fashion, the sellers will again pay the price.

Why can't eBay ever do the right thing?  They should be offering to remove negative FB's and poor DSR's every time an ebay glitch negatively impacts a seller.

Ebay is inherently incapable of initially doing the right thing because it lacks a moral or ethical compass. It does whatever is expedient for ebay.

Honesty and integrity aren't part of ebay's core values.

If ebay saw any revenue benefit$ in removing ebay caused negative feedback or lowered star ratings, it would do so. If ebay received massive negative publicity as a result of a "glitch," it might consider doing the "right thing."

Does anyone honestly believe ebay would do the "right thing" because to do so really would be the "right thing?"

You can believe that if these alleged "glitches" lowered ebay revenues, they'd be fixed in a flash or NEVER WOULD HAVE HAPPENED.

@ Ming

As I've shown on Diamond Haus eBay does remove negative feedback for certain sellers for supposed glitches (I doubt it was really a glitch and more of an oversight).

What eBay needs to do instead of making an official announcement on a page that few check is to reserve a few lines at the top of every listing for such cases.  Then when there is a glitch eBay can put a red flag and notify the buyer that it is possible that the listing is affected by today's glitch, detail the symptoms of the glitch, and tell the buyer to contact the seller if they are unsure.

Because ebay has no values, you can't believe anything they say, esp. when ot comes to glitches. funny, how ebay glitches hurt sellers and never ever buyers or the ebay site.
We take bad buyers very seriously, unlike ebay. We report them to other sites, block them, put them on spam sites etc. Just getting revenge for negative or neutral feedback and those silly questions that waste time...
Do you combine shipping? CAN YOU READ THE LISTING?
NO combining, please don't ask.. morons.

"What eBay needs to do instead of making an official announcement on a page that few check is to reserve a few lines at the top of every listing for such cases."

That's rather clever. It could be as simple as a display of a generic message with a link to the systems board, with an on-off switch. They have a global header now, it could be done there.

How dare you be so unfair to good old Ebay?  Who cares if a few of you lousy whining sellers get hurt & lose money? Ebay still collects the FVF then rips you off further & damages your business, and you have the NERVE to complain? I mean, how dare you mock Great people like John Donaho & Lorrie Norris?

People, don't you all "get it"? Ebay has funds "offshore". The CEO's and the Board of Directors all have HUGE mega golden Parachutes to fly away with.

The industry is dissolving for big companies such as ebay, who connect only with the failing retail sector. What a perfect ploy to chop up the ebay company and sell it in chunks, then retire on a healthy "severance package" Before the company loses everything?

Don't you find it incredible that Pierre Omidyar never says a thing about ebay? And that he IS the TOP of the main Board of Directors?

And he has plenty of time to twitter from other countries about the other fun tech and internet things he is developing?

Pierre is an idiot, a guy that got lucky. He didn't have the social consciousness to run with the billions he's made & do so good, rather he'll twitter. I think he's a TWIT. Lightning struck, and he didn't have the business sense to handle it. Then he hired a crinally incompetent CEO, Meg the Neg who allowed the site to be taken over by criminals from China, Nigeria & Romaina. Now Jonny Donuthead is just finishing driving the last stake home with his idiotic market unfriendly changes.

BEWARE of craigslist (for now).  ebay owns over 20% of craigslist.  Currently ebay & craigslist have lawsuits against each other. Until ebay gets their hands out of craigslist's pockets, I will not be using craigslist, either.

elanderbrand, why not use Craigslist? I have sold a few high ticket items there FOR FREE that didn't get any action on Feebay. I'd agree to not use it if you had to pay, but the lawsuit is partially about Craig's not monetizing the site to gerredybays satisfaction.

elanderbrand I use CL all the time. It's FUN! Remember when Ebay was fun? Absolutely love it both as a buyer and a seller. I have bought great stuff on CL and my sales on CL have been quick and painless. Can't ask for anything more. It reminds me of the early Ebay days. Local people selling to other local people (if you can wade thru the Ebay sellers and affiliates spamming the site). No fees, no policy violations that even Ebay can't keep straight. My household clutter sells and gets moved on to someone else. I have money in my pocket and in turn purchase on CL. Simple, simple, simple and I love it.

I would like to know why, when one of these glitches pops up, its always to the detriment of the sellers - its NEVER something in their favor!  That's downright peculiar!

@  Patricia

"I would like to know why, when one of these glitches pops up, its always to the detriment of the sellers - its NEVER something in their favor!"

Answer: because they're not "glitches." It's ebafia's way of coercing sellers into offering free international shipping, IMO.
