Is eBay Entering the Free Stores Sweepstakes?

By: Ina Steiner

eBay is promoting its ProStores ecommerce hosting service, just as its own third-party developers are offering low-cost and free stores to sellers.

A seller reported receiving an email from eBay yesterday offering a free ProStores Enterprise store with transaction fees of 0.5 percent; the monthly subscription fee for the Enterprise level is normally $249.95. However, "To qualify for this offer, you must be a current eBay Gold, Platinum, or Titanium PowerSeller on the day you receive your monthly ProStores account statement. Offer ends April 26, 2009."

eBay's ProStores unit currently charges merchants a monthly subscription fee and a monthly "Successful Transaction Fee" calculated as a percentage of the sales price of items sold on your store. Subscription fee varies by ProStores subscription tier and ranges from $9.95 - $249.95. ProStores Starter carries a 1.5% Successful Transaction Fee. All other tiers carry a 0.5% Successful Transaction Fee (50 cents per $100).

PowerSellers who are below Gold-level also received an email offer this week for a discount of 30% off the ProStores monthly Subscription Fee. (eBay already offers active eBay Stores subscribers a 30% discount off of ProStores' monthly subscription price.)

The timing of the promotions are interesting. Could eBay be protecting its turf? Auctiva recently launched a new stores offering, and Vendio launched a beta version of free stores yesterday.

I think it's all about "turf". Why allow PowerSellers to migrate to other stores that allow multi-channel access? Keep them where they are. Great move by eBay, if true. Inertia can be a powerful motivator.

Yes, I received that email too. However, I already use ProStores but through IntuitSolutions.net, because the eBay ProStores hosting was abysmal.

There is nothing that Ebay can offer me to keep me around. Free to Ebay means higher fees somewhere else.

Enough is enough. Gone at the end of the month to my own site.

Sorry Ebay but you suck.

Nearly anyone could do stores better than ebay, and I suspect nearly anyone treats sellers better than does ebay.

Just another Johnny-Come-Lately copycat move because ebay lacks both the vision and competence to create anything really new that benefits sellers.

Ebay will continue to plunge until its overspreadsheeted, overschooled, overpaid management team gets it through their large, arrogant, and collective head that when HONEST sellers succeed so too will ebay.

Ebay is reaping its just reward. Those with pro stores might do well to leave ebay's jake leg and undependable platform and go elsewhere. Don't reward ebay for coming in last.

I laugh every single time ebay offers anything that looks like a good deal for sellers.  This is a company with virtually no customer service and constant technical issues with the site itself.  Ebay could give everyone free Prostores for a year but you can bet it would be broken, never fixed, and there would be no one to whom a seller could report a problem unless you like receiving the nonsensical form responses.

C'mon ebay, give it a rest.  No one who's been around for awhile believes you will ever do anything good for sellers.

i have heard nothing but good things about prostores from those who use them, BUT i won't take them up on their offer because they are owned by ebay.  which to me means that at some point in the future they will start micromanaging them too.

Anyone remember some of the interesting contortions Billpoint went thru just before PayPal was purchased?  There was another 'me too' attempt by eBay that doesn't seem to have paid off too well.

Isn't that just like ebay, reward the (well to do) sellers who have huge warehouses full of inventory and keep robbing all the other sellers (the poor ones) who are struggling to pay that 12-15% FVF and use their money to subsidize the ones that can afford it.

It's reminisent of Bush's tax cuts for the richest only.

Ebay protecting it's turf? Hardly! More like trying to con the few uninformed sellers who haven't learned what a piece of junk the Prostores site is to use. There isn't a single redeeming feature on that overpriced, poorly performing software platform. That's okay it matches the rest of Ebay perfectly.

I wouldn't touch another Ebay enterprise to save my life. These guys are back stabbing, money-glutinous weasels. I'd go with Vendio for a store front.

I think Ebay is finally realizing that they are becoming just a customer acquisition tool. That's how they work for me and the success for my ecommerce store speaks for itself.

Ebay is a great way to acquire new customers. Once you have them, a friendly flyer in the package is all you need to steer your customer over to your ecommerce store FOREVER!

Interesting that the analyst annointed "industry leader" always seems to be at the donkey's rear end when it comes to innovation -- even if that 'innovation' is a sorry, too little too late copycat last gasp.

What we're seeing is the inevitable degeneration of an authoritarian corporation ruled by arrogance, corruption, overexpansion, and complacency. Sort of like the Roman Empire.

Fiddle on, Nero Ho.

What would be the advantage to using ebay's pro-stores? They continuously have technical problems, and they are expensive. Ebay continues to sabotage the placement and search of their clienteles' merchandise regardless of HOW much they pay for better service.
In fact, ebay provides NO customer service.
Anyone can open up their own store and get the same results. No customer service, and a disadvantaged item search.

Only intelligent folks will pay "next to nothing" for THAT, and have the freedom to run their business without being dictated to, additionally.

So, lets ask this question again. Why would anyone want to sell from ebay's Pro-stores?

Why would anyone trust eBay to do anything for their business?

eBay stores are now buried under outside vendor links right past auction items.

Really buried.

I just clicked a supposed store link to purchase something and it took me to Amazon.

So I bought it there.

How many other people are just buying it there?
