eBay Promotes Daily Deals with Coupon Offer - Woot!

By: Ina Steiner

eBay emailed 50,000 coupons to members as an incentive for them to sign up to receive Daily Deal email alerts. One AuctionBytes reader received a $2 coupon offer by email yesterday, and by this morning, a message on the eBay site said all of the coupons had all been redeemed.

eBay launched Daily Deals during the holiday shopping season last fall. Similar to Woot, which we wrote about in 2004, eBay's Daily Deals offer a limited number of a particular product from a particular seller at a special low price. ("A Daily Deal is a limited-quantity, deeply discounted, fixed-price item with Free Shipping offered to you by one of our Trusted Sellers. The Daily Deal is different everyday. Quantities are limited-act fast!")

Today, TigerDirect (TigerDirect.com) was offering a GPS portable navigation system for $89.99 (MSRP $199.99). It seems a great customer-acquisition strategy for a large retailer like TigerDirect who accumulates eBay buyers' contact information through the program. (I bet at some point during the transaction it asks if the buyer would like to be added to TigerDirect's own email mailing list.)

Not all Daily Deals are high-tech items - Buy (Buy.com) was also selling a pair of pliers for $3.99 (MSRP $29.99).

For those who don't like to receive daily emails, you can follow eBay Daily Deals on Twitter.

Daily Deals seems like an effective way to drive traffic to eBay - what are the upsides and downsides of the program?

Yep got mine yesterday. Going to run right to the couch and fire up the computer and buy something.

Now what shall I buy. I know how about a telephone from China or maybe some computer software from Nigeria.

Thanks but no thanks ebay. I will go down the street and use some gas and buy at a place that I know will stand behind their product.

But you know it is a sweet deal for the
Ebay cheerleaders.

you hate ebay, whatever. find a real cause to get worked up over.

i use ebay; i dislike it, but i use it.

I don't see the motivation for getting all bent over every single post that appears here on auctionbytes.

seriously, look in the mirror and ask yourself where your time is going.

you're dying here, by the minute. why waste it being so bitter? you think the rest of us want to hear you complain? you're not that important, get over yourself.

Sounds pretty tacky - the same sort of tackyness that's killing YAHOO - just compare YAHOO's garish in-your-face midway with GOOGLE's quiet, effective, no nonsense presentation and style. Guess which one is doing well here. I guess EBAY is trying to learn by repeating all the mistakes in the book.

I suppose offering you two bucks to opt in for advertising is better than just sending the junk emails without asking.
If this brings buyers to the site I'm all for it.
eBay needs to spend more money to improve traffic.

eBay is really late to the dance on this promotion. But what would anyone expect. There are hundreds of daily deal sites for a consumer to choose from. Why would someone pick ebay - Alot of them offer discounts...

Have those new deck chairs for the titanic arrived yet?

I got my invite yesterday.... and deleted it. I guess I should not look a gift horse in the mouth but offering me 2 bucks as they gouge me for as much as they possibly can, is like a slap in the face.

Go figure...ebay has stomped on every user's rights during the last 12 months (or more) and now they're trying to pay people with coupons to buy on the site.

NO WAY!  Ebay treats it's customers like dirt!  If ebay were giving away merchandise, I still wouldn't buy or sell on the site.

Not one penny of my money will ever go to ebay, as long as they persist in treating their own customers with contempt.

Get rid of Donahoe and his flunkies.  Get rid of all of the new policies which killed the best buyers & sellers transactions and caused them to flee to the more honest sites, like bonanzle.

Puzzling.

> eBay emailed 50,000 coupons to members

If only 50,000 coupons, total value $100,000, were mailed out, how can this message below be true?

> by this morning, a message on the eBay site said all of the coupons had all been redeemed.

Given that ourselves, and people posting here report NOT using the coupons.

Is this another example of 'Billy Math'?  Where ''all of the coupons'' is not 100% of the coupons in real life.

Or does the article have errors?

Just another ebay attempt at pushing its project catalog sellers in the buyers faces.

Trusted sellers = ''diamond merchant sellers'' that ebay has to try to keep happy.
Daily Deals = Spam for above mentioned diamond sellers.

Ebays idea of a fair and level playing field is akin to trying to play golf on the leaning tower of Pisa.

I wanted to give a shout out to that great interview with Fashionphile. That was really inspiring that her web site store in 2008 out sold Ebay. Sure, she'll probably give a plug to Ebay but this smart lady will be directing any sales or interest she gets from her Oscar night gig right to her website.

These are the kind of sellers that put Ebay on the map and exactly the kind of sellers that are actively booting off. And you know she'll eventually leave when the fees and frustration reach to a high of a level. She was polite regarding Ebay, but reading between the lines, you could hear the changes have affected her too. Good for her though on her success selling utterly ridiculous expensive designer purses and shoes during a depression. This tells me Ebay SHOULD and COULD be thriving right now!

Thanks Ina and David for your always informative information and interviews. I really am appreciative of your time and knowledge.

Coupons are okay but I'd like to see more advertising - radio, TV, print - that sort of thing.  AND I'd prefer them to work on their attitude and their image and patch things up with their users.

I see BUY (ebay's prize diamond) has one of the daily deal specials today.

Isnt it interesting to anyone else besides me how BUY maintains  a 99.6 feedback rating with near perfect DSRs constantly, yet if you check BUY.COM'S customer satisfaction rating at resellerratings.com BUY's has a dismall, I mean dismall customer approval rating....like 22 percent in past 6 months and less than 50 percent lifetime approval rating.

I decided to check out Buy's customer approval rating at Ebay's shopping.com site. Ebay shows this DIAMOND seller's overall customer satisfaction rating as 3 1/2 checkmarks on a 4 checkmark scale, YET out of 2489 customer reviews, 83% of the reviews are three checkmarks or less, and a whopping 720 of the ratings only had one checkmark....So it's blatantly obvious Ebay totally fabricates Buy's customer approval rating at shopping.com grossly misleading shoppers on that site. I'd like to know the truth about Buy's REAL feedback and DSR ratings on ebay.

I simply cant believe a company like Buy that has a dismall customer satisfaction rating for website sales can consistently maintain 99.6 with 4.8 DSRs.

It's an expensive way to buy traffic. Not only is it unsustainable over the long haul, the deep discounting is going return to the books as a drop in GMV.

Ebay is starting to emit the miasma of panic. Free pictures in the categories Dork Downhole's policies have damaged the most. Oleaginous retraction from mass reserve holding on Paypal. It's not making it, is it?

Ebay lied about bringing on Buy and the whole deal. Lied about them paying listing fees and getting reduced fvf's. Why would we not assume their DSRs are being fixed?

The only reason Ebay maintains as well as they do is because there is not another site that as of yet comes close to being an Ebay replacement (expect Amazon). Their time will come!!!! Almost everyone hates them!!!!
