Delays in Microsoft Cashback for eBay Purchases

By: Ina Steiner

eBay heavily promoted Microsoft Live Search cashback during the holiday shopping season as a way for shoppers to save up to 30 percent on purchases. But now some shoppers are so aggravated that their payments are weeks overdue that they're reporting the company to the Better Business Bureau.

Microsoft responded to our inquiry today, see full story in Thursday's AuctionBytes Newsflash. However, Microsoft's PR person would not answer questions about how many eBay shoppers were affected or the nature of the problem. We've had several AuctionBytes readers write in to say they are having this problem.

If you've had an experience with the program, let us know how it went and if you've received your money yet.

I received several hundred dollars, ontime, for many seperate purchases, without a hitch.

I thought I would get that in edgewise before the usual band of hissing midgets comes by and go on their merry way of bashing eBay.

Remember, if you're having a problem here, take it up with Microsoft.

yep - 3 weeks past due now.  Called paypal and asked if there was a problem - the agent said "I'm going to be honest with you yes there are some issue we expect to have this fixed soon you should be receiving your money any day now".

Interesting that he had to preface his dialogue with I'm going to be honest!!  Anyway that was 1 1/2 weeks ago and still nothing.

Rather than the BBB everyone should be reporting this to the FTC that is what I did.

I feel for those folks who got caught in the mess.  I was not in that group and ended up with nearly $1200 in cashback.  Came out waaay ahead.

Still no excuse for any delays when screwing with other people's money, especially when you are MS/PP/eBay.

BUY had several negs removed where the buyers supposedly didn't get their Microsoft cashback.  Interesting thing is that it was BUY's fault and they even promoted that the item qualified for cashback in the subtitle.
That being said has anyone here received negative or neutral feedback as a result of this program?  And if you did, did eBay ever remove it?

What concerns me is the fact that these giants will use the holiday season to promote this discount but then when a problem occurs such as this they will not divulge how many it is effecting. If you offer such a discount then you should be forthright in offering the statistics of how many it effects. If they new they HAD to do this they would be more careful in distributing these discounts. Makes me wonder if they planned something like this all along knowing they don't have to respond to how many it effects.

I'm one of the unlucky ones.  What I don't get is how did the automatic payments work OK - you know - the ones that were deposited immediately?  And then these after 90 days are showing FAILED FAILED FAILED?

If I'd bought a computer from them and not paid in a timely fashion you can bet they would already be knocking on my door!

Somebody needs to get off their bupkus and get this solved!

Thanks Ina!

Prior to mid-January, I was receiving my cashback as promised.  It was deposited directly into my Paypal account.  But, as of 1/24/09, I am owed over $200.

A deposit was attempted on 1/24/09, 1/30/09, 2/4/09, and 2/10/09.  All say ''FAILED''.  I have emailed Microsoft many times, only to receive automated responses.

This is getting out of hand.  I find it very hard to believe that Microsoft cannot figure out a way to deposit money into our Paypal accounts.

I did a lot of the Live CB/eBay transactions, and received about $2000 cash back w/ no problems until the last set of payments.  $278.40 has shown "Failed" for a month now.  At first you were allowed to specify the PP account that you wanted cash sent to.  I used my personal account and had no problems.  These failed ones state "We've encounterd a problem depositing your cashback reward into the PayPal account that you used for your eBay purchase."  I paid with my Premier account that had a block against payments w/o a confirmed address.  Block has been removed, but still no cash.

I was told that Microsoft has trouble linking to PayPal's systems since they moved to automatic cashback payment.

Email I received:
We have encountered a technical issue while processing some payments for recent eBay cashback purchases. We are actively investigating the root of the issue, in close partnership with eBay and PayPal, and are working to resolve this as quickly as possible. We'd like to assure customers that all eligible cashback payments which meet the Live Search cashback and eBay terms and conditions will be rewarded. We apologize for any delays and thank you for your patience. As soon as we have more information on the resolution of this issue, we will be back in touch.

Have $213.00 Cashback way over due that keeps showed as ''failed'' (appears to be trying to automatically deposit it into Paypal. I have gotten no follow ups or human response to any of my support tickets after a month! Glad to see this article so at least I have some idea that they are working on it. Would be nice if Microsoft had phone support.. Prior to this problem I did receive $190 with no problems, but I had the option with that to select my payment method. So the problem does appear to be related to the automatic Paypal deposits.

wow buyers really dont know their consumer rights do they. its not the bbb, its the FTC. deceptive trade practice, false and misleading statements, etc. they need to be calling or emailing using the form at ftc and filing the complaints there. bbb gave ebay a great nify sparkly customer service award. why anyone would report anything to the bbb when ebay pays bbb a membership is beyond me. you want to make ebay and microsoft squirm u sic the ftc on them

I've been waiting for over a month for a total of 5 cashback payments that have repeatedly failed to go through.
Live.com support said to have PayPal investigate but PayPal says it's not their problem. Now I just get one canned response after another, and still no money.

Ina is listed in Wikipedia:

MAVEN

A maven (also mavin) is a trusted expert in a particular field, who seeks to pass knowledge on to others. The word maven "comes from the Yiddish, and it means one who accumulates knowledge."

In network theory and sociology, a maven is someone who has a disproportionate influence on other members of the network. The role of mavens in propagating knowledge and preferences has been established in various domains, from politics to social trends.

Malcolm Gladwell used it in his book The Tipping Point (Little Brown, 2000) to describe those who are intense gatherers of information and impressions, and so are often the first to pick up on new or nascent trends. The popularity of the work of Safire and Gladwell has made the word widely used in their particular contexts. Gladwell also suggests that mavens may act most effectively when in collaboration with connectors - i.e., those people who have wide network of casual acquaintances by whom they are trusted, often a network that crosses many social boundaries and groups. Connectors can thus easily and widely distribute the advice or insights of a maven.

In the afterword of The Tipping Point, Gladwell described a "maven trap" as a method of obtaining information from mavens. In the book he gave the example of the toll-free telephone number on the back of a bar of Ivory soap, which one could call with questions or comments about the product. Gladwell's opinion is that only those who are passionate or knowledgeable about soap would bother to call and that this is a method by which the company could inexpensively glean valuable information about their market.

In the book The Human Fabric (Aviri, 2004), Bijoy Goswami uses the term to describe one of three core energies in people, organizations and society.

Hissing midgets? You must work in eBay's customer relations department! LOL! You can always spot the eBay employee trolls by the arrogant, demeaning and condescending tone in their posts. What are you losers going to do when eBay goes belly up? I guess you'll have to go out and get a real job...
