eBay Glitch Report plus Reader Tip on My eBay

By: Ina Steiner

A seller reported that eBay is displaying free shipping on the "Order Details" page in cases where he does not offer free shipping. He said it happens on multi-item sales. On the Order Details page, it says free shipping on the product line, but actually charges the customer the correct total shipping. He said his customers are demanding refunds, even though the listings specified the shipping costs and customers were charged correctly. I could find one thread on the eBay Discussion Board taking about a free-shipping glitch, though it provided few details.

I also received a letter from a reader who suggested people who aren't happy with the new My eBay page sign on through the Canadian website (eBay.ca) where you can opt-out of the new version.

Another reader reported the following glitch a week ago: "If you click "view seller's items", not all of the items for sale comes up. Sometimes it's one item, sometimes it's all items, sometimes it's "zero items for sale"."

I've been hearing continued complaints about faulty DSR calculations, but since eBay lets buyers leave DSR ratings anonymously, it's impossible for sellers to document. The reason eBay made the ratings anonymous was to protect buyers from retaliatory feedback. Despite the fact sellers can no longer leave retaliatory feedback, eBay has left the anonymous DSR policy in place.

eBay routinely shows Free Shipping where it shouldn't be.  And if you purchase an item that is listed with free shipping, and then the seller disputes this (at least in my experience) eBay backs the seller.  This is a major PITA for buyers.

Also, eBay is NOT enforcing their new payments policy about paper payments, nor are they enforcing their policies about shipping prices.  Even when reported, sellers' items with obvious violations in the descriptions (ie. I accept cash, check, MO etc.) are not removed.  Nor are items with exorbitant shipping.

Hi Ina, do you have more information on ''faulty DSR calculations''. Also I'll pass the shipping glitch to the appropriate folks

Thanks

Ebay has become a toothless behemoth anachronism that refuses to enforce most policies that would decrease listings and sell through revenues.

They refuse to protect sellers from extortionist buyers for the same reason except under such narrowly defined circumstances that it's virtually impossible to get retaliatory extortionist feedback removed.

They refuse to protect sellers from thieving buyers so the buyer can continue to buy and, by extension, steal more from sellers.

The prohibition against mentioning acceptance of paper payments is just one of many policies ebay currently isn't enforcing in order to boost listing numbers.

Notice that sellers who do offer free shipping aren't reporting the free shipping is somehow being removed from their listings.

I've been an ebay member for many years and NEVER seen a single, solitary "glitch" that benefited sellers. NOT ONCE. EVER.

Every single "glitch" pertaining to listings or sellers has ALWAYS benefited ebay in some way -- nearly always in terms of generating extra revenue.

Statistically, glitches should occur randomly. Over a period of time and with a large enough sampling, the "glitches" should break evenly -- 50% in favor of sellers and 50% in favor of ebay.

When did YOU ever see a "glitch" that benefited YOU?

Constantly labeling these chronic problems as "glitches" is intellectually dishonest and doesn't reflect reality. It's like calling John Gotti a "businessman."

Ina, ebay no longer deserves the benefit of the doubt.

Let ebay pay for all this "free shipping."

The new ''My eBay'' was supposed to ''improve the buyer and seller experience'' according to my Power Seller rep.  I once was a Gold Power Seller and now down to Silver as I move my business off this platform onto otrher sites.  Supposedly, they are getting set to roll out a whole new host of fee adjustments.  I'm just dying to see what those will be, but I dont think they will be good.

I just can't believe that we are still discussing glitches at ebay. The whole site is glitchie. Complainers what are you still doing there. Take the hint. Ebay no longer wants you. Get out. Bonanzle or Ecrater will treat you like a person not a non entity.

Ebay doesn't have the leadership or the programers to fix anything. Price increases are a coming. Get out while you still have your sanity.

@Ming

As far as I'm concerned, it's the 1 year anniversary of the death of eBay. To me, eBay died last year, January 29th, 2008.

As for the statistical possibility of ''glitches'' favoring either the buyer or the seller, you have a valid point. Logic dictates this should be the case. Prove it however! Therefore, you're left with one conclusion: it's on purpose. Again, I say, try to prove it. eBay does lie. No doubt in anyone's mind there.

@Bob

eBay does remove listings, as I've reported many with ridiculous shipping. Like one the other day for an item clearly worth $125, which was being sold with a buy-it-now of one cent, and $125 shipping. Clearly fee avoidance. The item was removed in about 10 minutes after the report, which to me clearly indicates some automation is involved as eBay would never act that fast on anything if a human were involved.

And, the promotional shipping is not working either. I have $9.95 max on multiple items but it stopped working for me about 2 weeks ago and eBay can't find out why.

There's a thread in the feedback discussion board, "ANYONES DSR's ROLLERCOASTING UP & DOWN RIGHT BEFORE INVOICE/CALC. DISCOUNT?"

Sellers are spending an enormous amount of time trying to track and measure their DSRs. In the real world, a seller would know who's unhappy with their service and why, and could then focus on making the buyer happy and improving their business. While eBay is going to roll out DSR reporting capability, it's still not fully transparent: http://www.auctionbytes.com/cab/abn/y09/m01/i28/s02

I would suggest you view eBays diamond sellers:....

Shoplet
Smartbargains........They have each 23 and 26 negatives respectively and their DSR ratings have not changed. We have been watching their feedback and DSR since they were 12 negs each.I commented to Diamondhaus but they think there is room for explanation which I differ with. Check them out and watch for yourself.

Patty-
I'm glad to see eBay hasn't changed and appears to be selectively targeting which policy violators to go after.

Ming-
About five years ago eBay/Paypal had a billing glitch that with multiple heads.  We reported them, repeatedly.  After "fixing" the problems numerous times, it got to the point where our bill showed a few hundred dollars less than it should have.  I stopped complaining at that point, :) , and figured that if eBay couldn't fix their code, I'd just accept it in that instance.  But it took dozens of hours of communicating with eBay for them to get to the point where they were trying to fix anything.

Last week I sent a money order to a seller. Instead of sending the item to my home address on the paper enclosed the seller sent it to the ''Confirmed eBay address''.

That address was a former work address that I used on a SECOND eBay ID over A YEAR AGO.

I looked up my address on file for eBay - my PO Box billing address.

I looked up the PayPal addresses, 1) my business PO Box and 2) my home address that I had included on the piece of paper.

I Googled and called the seller (HEY EBAY, requested the seller's contact info on Thur. Jan. 29th - it's MONDAY, FEB. 2nd and still waiting for the contact info).

Seller said he ONLY had to ship to the confirmed ebay address and I should drive 17 miles across the county to find it. Interesting to note that the seller was in the TOWN NEXT TO the delivery location. He said call eBay and PayPal to get a refund from them.

Right, play IM footsie with an outsouced CS rep on eBay or get jerked around for a half hour on the phone with PayPal (who shouldn't have had ANYTHING to do with this transaction since I used a money order).

Previous to last week my plan was look all over Google and the net for an item, search again, wait... and then buy it on eBay.

Now my plan is look all over Google and if you don't find the widget, live without it.

A ''Nordstrom experience''?

A FIVE star experience?

No, just another ''4Q'' transaction with eBay, PayPal and a Power Seller.

My LAST transaction.

To that dumb buyer - YOUR FAULT. Have your ebay address and paypal address and shipping address MATCH. If you bought from us then complained, you get blacklisted and blocked from all our selling sites forever. We take bad buyers very serouisly.

I reported that free shipping when you get to order details to print it, MANY TIMES.
Apparently they don't believe me or they just don't give a rats ***

Nice to know it wasn't just ME it happened to.

I told them ''I KNEW it wasn't free shipping when I bought it, and I am not ASKING for free shipping, but why would you show that on ''order details'' when it CLEARLY was not free, and will do nothing but aggravate buyers???''

Good to know they ''got right on it''

I sometimes think when I tell them something it would get fixed faster and have more attention paid to it if I TOLD MY CAT.

Now I am even more sure of it.

ANYHOO.....

Just visited Bonanzle and WOW, what a nice clean site, with TONS of features for sellers.

GUYS, even if you're not ready to move, at least SIGN UP over there.

When (not if anymore) they go under, we need a presence elsewhere.

Many sellers are reporting GREAT traffic and sales there.

And if you like BIN, why not eCrater? How much cheaper can you get than free?

When a business doesn't even LISTEN to its paying customers, sooner or later it's going to fail.

They least they could do is LOOK and see that what I told them nearly a MONTH AGO was really happening. (and I did mention that it was MULTIPLE sellers, not just once or twice)

I also asked if the change to the ''New My eBay'' was due to a relative of Donahoes running IT, or, his girlfriend, or ....

Still waiting for an answer to that.

2 weeks ago i notice my fb ating go from 99.8% to 100%.

what changed? nothing much. my one negative feedback i rec'd 10 months ago from a retaliatory seller is still there.

my fb should be 99.8% but somehow ebarf manages to screw up the most basic and simple equation.

ebarf - if you cant get the simplest equztion right how in goodness name can you do the dsr nonsense?

eBay recently had a promotion for 3 or 5 day auction listings that had reduced fees.  I listed one item under this promotion and was charged the full fees.  I contacted them and they said that it was because the item was from my inventory and that once the auction ends I could request a refund on the fees.  What is the point of offering a promotion that the seller has to jump through a bunch of hoops just to get the fees refunded.  I don't have time to deal with that.  If it wasn't for the majority of my sales coming from there, I would not be there.  I am focusing my efforts on Bonanzle where any questions or problems are answered immediately from the wonderful guys running that place!!!  Highly recommended to any of you upset with eBay.

I am having proven DSR glitch problems, I have been writing to ebay since last November 2008. I know it is a glitch because my scores swung rapidly downward, to the point, that was ridiculous, with NO CUSTOMER COMPLAINT.

I got a lot of canned answers, until I sent them a copy of the stats I was keeping and threatened to report it to ebay corporate offices, if someone did not investigate. They moved my stats from lowered to standard then back raised in two days...took down my 30 day DSR's...and sent me an email they were investigating, which was two weeks ago.  STILL NO RESPONSE.

My DSR's changed, when I GOT NO FEEDBACK, and because I am a new seller, NO DSR's expired.  They ran out of canned reasons to explain what was going on...and it was made worse, by the fact that I had 5.0's in shipping time and communication.

Ie. if my customers think I am great with communications, why would they not complain before giving me a 1 in shipping and handling charges.

my thought has been this is related to their desire to get all sellers to do free ship and handling...which benefits ebay, because they take 12% of that too. It does NOT BENEFIT THEIR CUSTOMERS...IN THE LEAST and saavy buyers know this!!!!

@  eBay is scum

Learn to read friend. The eBay address and the PayPal address they gave were the same. The seller WAS GIVEN A WRONG ADDRESS from ebay.

I don't understand why the seller didn't READ THE ADDRESS on the enclosed letter and send it there? He had the money and the address, why not ship it to the seller's address.

eBay is scum, you must be one of those Great Sellers that Griff bloviated about.

I also find the DSR's frustrating. I offer free shipping and have a 4.9. A lot of buyers get confused and think giving a 4 is good, even though I have been told that Ebay warns them before they complete this. Oh well, life is short. I have tried another websight when on the blog section a seller said Yippee! I got my second sale! She had been on for four months. So far, Ebay proves the best, but I

I have noticed improper dsr results for the last several months. It is clear to me ebay is menipulating the results at will to reduce discounts .My results seem to go up after invoicing to 4.9 in every category but mysteriously drop dramaticly to 4.7 and below just before invoicing even though I have a glowing feedback with not a negative comment to be found. There must be some type of anti trade law being broken here I am sure
