eBay Regional Seller Conferences to Kick off in Atlanta

By: Ina Steiner

eBay has canceled its first eBay On Location event, which was scheduled to take place Orlando in February. eBay is replacing its annual conference, eBay Live, with a series of regional events that includes classes on  building and growing an eBay business. According to an announcement by President of eBay Marketplaces Lorrie Norrington on Monday, the first eBay On Location event is now scheduled to be held in Atlanta in March 2010.

The last eBay Live national conference was held in Chicago in June 2008, only months after John Donahoe replaced Meg Whitman as CEO. The event was a low-point in eBay's history, and with sellers reeling from the radical changes eBay was instituting, they expressed their dissatisfaction loud and clear.

Last year, eBay canceled the 2009 eBay Live, which had been scheduled for Atlanta in June, and had announced the 2010 eBay Live event would take place in Orlando in August 2010. eBay cancelled that event in July, and now it seems Atlanta will replace Orlando as the home of the inaugural "eBay On Location" event.

There are still some Unanswered Questions about eBay On Location.
  • How much will it cost to attend the event?
  • Will eBay limit attendance to those who live within a certain distance?
  • Why did eBay cancel the inaugural Orlando event scheduled for February?
  • Why hasn't eBay announced the other locations aside from San Jose in August?
  • Who is likely to go to an eBay On Location event?
Update: More information about the reported locations of events (Philadelphia, Minneapolis, Dallas, Phoenix, Seattle) and curriculum are published in today's Newsflash newsletter. In addition to the usual business/how-to-sell on eBay sessions, there will be moderated round table discussions with local experts and an eBay "speed dating" networking session.

One of the more intriguing is called Seller Releases: "hear firsthand details around the latest seller release announcements and changes that are in store for you in the coming months."

The event is being held in Atlanta to either announce John Lawson as a new board member or new CEO.
They haven't announced other cities because they want to see how things go in Atlanta first.
My sources either didn't know or would not answer the other questions you asked.

Can anyone spell c-o-w-a-r-d-i-c-e?

If John Donahoe were a soldier, he'd run home to Momma and Pappa (Ebay Live 2008) the first time a bullet came within 100 yards of his precious b school bum.

If he's still CEO when this event takes place, you can bet the ranch he won't be there and neither will Mommy and Daddy.

Let's all play General Sherman and figuratively emulate his march through Atlanta!

Ebay's and Graft the Magic Seller Advocate's ideas on how to grow businesses:

1. Sell 1%-2% over cost.
2. Offer free shipping and insurance.
3. Send free gifts with each purchase.
4. Wrap each item separately using professional packing materials.
5. Hire professional translators to translate item descriptions into German, French, Spanish, Italian, and Japanese.
6. Pay buyers for returned item shipping and don't deduct original shipping charges from their refund.

7. Finally, if after instituting these 'best practices,' there's any money left over that could possibly be defined as seller profit, a new provision in the user agreement will allow ebay to remove that amount from your PayPal account OR add it to your invoice.

We need these geniuses to tell us this in Atlanta?

Atlanta? That’s where CNN is based. Maybe if they show up and talk to ebay users they will report the truth about ebay for a change.

I think I can answer your second question: A.

ebay would probably have to make the event open only to local sellers because nobody is making enough money on ebay to afford to make the trip. If they open it to everyone only amazon sellers will have the money to go and I don’t think ebay wants that.

Wouldn’t surprise me if you had to be pre-approved for tickets so ebay could seed the audience with pinocchios’, also a good opportunity to sell T-shirts.

Wonder where ebay will be by march 2010 and so what if they do announce a new CEO it would be a full-time job trying to regain the trust of it’s former users.

Develop other avenues for selling and have them in place for the next holiday season. Don’t get your hopes up.

Those who don’t remember the past are doomed to repeat it.

Please... This is why you'll never find true answers on a blog like this. It's lemming mentality. You think appointing a self-promoting social media "expert" as CEO is the answer? Why not annoint a head of one of the seller organizations, or a blogger-turned-retail-site-evangelist. These people could sink eBay faster than Donnyhole. And that's really saying something. Really kids - this is why eBay is kicking your butt. Because you think that someone can come in and wave a magic wand and everything will go back to 2005. Time to suck it up, move on and grow up.

Ming, who pi$$ed in your cornflakes this morning? On the contrary, I've goten a ton of help from this board and I HAVE moved on.

I think that the main reason ebay has replaced ebay live with regional meetings is because attendance was going down. I was in Chicago at the last Live (only because it was local to me) and it was like a graveyard. It's much harder to see the small crowds when you break it up into small conferences.

Gotta love comments like this. Oh really from stellar results to 15% top line shrinkage? Come on.

Ebay was doing just fine in late 2005, early 2006 when a series of "really they cant be that stupid" type changes started.

In the first qtr of 2006 during stores in core top line GMV grew 34% year over year, Ebay added 4 million active users in the qtr (vs 100-200k a qtr now), things were humming.

Ebay had created the largest mall ever on the web in a short period of time called Ebay stores ,and 200 million items stocked its shelves.

Between an identity crisis, raising fees, picking apart its sellers, banning live auctions, ebooks and a bunch of other hairbrained changes they continually shell-shocked the user base til no one cared. In addition they totally blew the chance to blow Craigslist out of the water with their own local site

This is the easiest company in the world to make a success. These guys couldnt even get ads that worked right.

There is still time to turn this around and many ways to do it.

Here is what I would do...

1- Create an active Local option totally different than craigs and integrate kijiji but have it be uniquely eBay. It works with nearly all its properties like rent.com, tickets, ebay sales, classifieds , givignworks etc.

2- No more hide n seek intl selling. Have true cross country sales of items. They are getting better with the global buying hub but few even know about it.

3- In relation to#2, buy the rest of Mercado Libre (stock symbol MELI) to juuice up this intl expansion.

4- Auto-affiliate each and every Ebay seller- Make them part of any ad action on their listings on their content or anything they bring to eBay or on any items cross-sold from their listings. This would make Ebay the only site where sellers could profit from 1- selling their items 2-ads placed on their listings or around their content 3- cross-sales with other sellers from their listings. Ive already talked to huge sellers that love this idea.

4- Make feedback a way to sell more items instead of a way to rip apart sellers. People are happy? Like 99.1% of eBay transactions seem to indicate, then have sellers be able to generate auto coupons for their next visit. Make every 100th feedback a spin of the Ebay wheel for coupons or prizes. Stop the negativity, keep the basis program and dont dare take away peoples feedback numbers they worked hard for with some stupid NPS score

5- Re-engage the entire community and stop cutting customer service.

6- Guarantee every transaction on Ebay for buyers and seller protect every seller who ships and delivers their item to wherever it may be going. Utilize insurance or whatever they have to or adjusted fee levels to make this happen

7- Get back some key employees who left because of this Fiasco

8- Stop messing with search daily

9- SPLIT SEARCH RESULTS between ending soonest and a section at the top for their Best Match. They have had no clue the ramnifications of their ping pong placement between Best match , top seller etc. I have listed numerous examples of bogus searches and failed long term consequence thinking on the boards.

10- Have a series of ads showing real products, real buyers and sellers worldwide for Ebay. Lots of people never even heard of Ebay Motors or the types of products they can get on ebay.

11- Make a 40 year plan to buyback all the companys stock so people actively trading on the site could become owners of the company through a stock purchase plan at a discount based on the volume they bring to the site. The community would eventually own more and more of the company making outstanding stock scarcer. Everyone would want to sell here to get more action.

12- Continue the expansion of Ebay Mobile and Paypal Mobile, two things I talked about years ago when people laughed at me. Now they are growing like crazy.

This isnt rocket science. Even the people that left trading here have a foot in the door, these guys just keep stepping on it and slamming the door on them. People WANT to like ebay, they still have time.

With an expanded LOCAL and INTL presence the world will be trading here , no other site can do this. Tons of new types of products will be sold on the site and people will charge on back.

Ebay can't even organize a conference without last minute changes, let alone run a selling site.  No matter how they set up local events they'd better salt the the rooms with lots of staff or attendance will look lean to the press.

In this age of social media and networking, the last thing you want to do is have a huge meeting place for disgruntled sellers. It is way too easy for malcontents to exchange notes.

Divide and conquer.

eBay's obligation is to their shareholders.

Will eBay ban recording devices? Will you be required to sign a non-disclosure agreement?

I'm sure Ebay will hand pick sellers who won't give them much trouble.  That's why Ebay Live was stopped - somebody was definitely going to get hurt at the 2009 one - if it had been held.

Hey - those who keep talking about Ebay stockholders - Ebay can't be faulted for leaning toward them....Ebay pays no dividend and the stock rose, but only at a snail's pace and it is still about 10.00 a share lower then it was when Donahoe took over.  No...the stockholders are getting a bum deal for sure.

Woweee this is that religion John Donahoe spoke of. I think as long as you bring a live chicken, you get in free! But you have to be one of the chosen, ie vulnerable, susceptible, controllable. Don't you guys watch dateline. I can't believe you haven't picked this up yet lol

@ Katerina

Please re read the post you took exception to and address the person who actually posted it.

You can bet your last dollar -- and anyone who tolerates any more of The Ho's garbage won't have even one left to bet with -- that 2010 "seller releases" will be designed to improve ebay's profitability at YOUR expense.

The one thing that ebay has in abundance if not a surplus of is core incompetence. They're unable to figure out ways to make the corporation more profitable while actually helping sellers to be more profitable so these intellectual pygmies plot and scheme 24/7 how to take more from us.

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!

Either boycott these meeting travesties or make sure anarchy reigns - especially the one in Atlanta!

Show up, John Donahoe, show up!

DEATH to ebay corp. in 2009 or 2010.
