eBay Holds 1-Day Promotion on Auction Listings

By: Ina Steiner

eBay is holding a seller promotion tomorrow. Here's the announcement, posted November 24th, 2009 at 4:01 pm PST:

Tomorrow, November 25, one day only, Insertion Fees for your Auction-style items will be 50% off on http://www.ebay.com/, http://www.motors.ebay.com/ (Parts & Accessories only) and http://www.ebay.ca/, regardless of your start price. Most categories are included, please check out our information page for full details. Also, we recommend using the 5 day listing duration in order to capture the large buying audience of "cyber Monday" which is one of the busiest e-commerce shopping days of the year.

We hope you enjoy this promotion, and we wish you a safe, Happy Thanksgiving!

Note that tomorrow is the day before Thanksgiving, the busiest travel day of the year in the U.S.

eBay was originally planning a 3-day promotion from November 23 - 25 and had sent out emails to sellers. That email was followed by an email that stated, "There was a promotion planned for this coming week that was cancelled. There are currently no plans for a 50% off Insertion Fee Promotion on the dates mentioned in the prior email. Please note that any listings created during these dates will be subject to normal Insertion Fees. We apologize for any confusion that this may have caused."

The company likely canceled the original promotion due to the search outage over the weekend. Apparently they are now confident that their system can take a 1-day listing surge without bringing down search/browse functionality.

This is laughable. They knocked this down from a 3 day promo to a 1 day because the system can't handle the load?!  I seriously can't wait for eBay to report their fourth quarter earnings. I'm going to be sitting there with popcorn.

And hey, isn't eBay's blogger supposed to be on top of promos like this? FAIL again, RBH. Funny, you were just apologizing this weekend for missing the outage...maybe you're watching the wrong site?

What kind of a company is this? Bad enough they retracted the 50% promotion, now they’re retracting a retraction?  What page are we on today eBay?

And they wonder why sellers are leaving en masse? You simply cannot run a business with these people, the same people who talk about the T in Team - they can’t walk the walk because they’re spinning in circles and in no time at all, you're spinning right alongside them!

Try putting together a business proposal, a business plan... how do you do that when the rules change in size and shape not by the year, the month, but by the minute?

Amazon by contrast, has been a breath of fresh air. They play by a rule book and actually give you a copy! They’re not flawless, some of their rules are tough but they’ve never treated me like some piece of human garbage that could be easily replaced. There is respect for their seller from the ground floor up.

I'm flabbergasted - no other word for it.  Aren't they afraid their servers will splode???  You have to admit the good folks at ebay are amusing if nothing else ;-)

This is proof that either eBay lies, that eBay is just stupid, or eBay has amazing software engineers.

First they claim there was a surge in listings causing widespread chaos.

They remove listing promotion that would have lasted 3 days.  It has been proven that listings increase during these promotions.  Seems like a good idea considering what recently happened (if true).

Next they bring back the promotion but reduce it to 1 day.  Considering how successful these promotions are that basically means all those listings that would have been listed over a 3 day period are now all listed at once on one specific day.

Assuming there is a crash then we know the answer.  I'll leave it as an exercise to the reader to figure out the answer if there is no crash.

So they say the “Crash” was because of a huge “Surge” in listings, with no evidence to back it up, several sites with eBay listing numbers show no evidence of this, if anything a huge decrease in listings just before the crash. Then they said it was because of a “Software” issue in their servers, which is it eBay, Surge or Software problem.

Then they came out with NO 3 day Promotion, then OK 1 day Promotion, hmm will the servers handle a new “Surge” in listings like last weekend??? Or will they crash and burn again?

BTW, I love all the Spin from news outlets on the “Big Crash of 2009” WooHoo eBay is doing soooo great; our sellers are crashing our servers with huge numbers of new listings for our really, really great buyers. Move over Amazon and Walter, eBay is on top again, lets party like it 1999. Dance baby dance, do the spin, dance so more, spin some more, and spin it again. Shhhhh, do not tell anyone the true with what really happen or the party will be over.

New slogan from eBay: Come to think of it, Save eBay - Don't list.

I think David pretty much shot holes in eBay's "listing surge" excuse in his previous blog post. If you click through to the press release of November 4th, on eBay's OWN site, it reads:

"That’s the power of how many searches occur on eBay every day. Now add insights gleaned from almost 200 million live product listings, the stories of more than 25 million sellers and the several million purchases people make each day on eBay, and you get The Inside Source"

Heck, that was 2 full weeks before the "crash"! Their own words. Poor eBay - hoisted on their own petard again.

I knew it was over a couple of years ago when I went 0-22 during a listing promotion. I did get 8 rebounds and blocked two bad feedbacks however.

50% off auction listings fees for one day? Hello?

What does this translate to in real terms? Pennies? We’re not talking FVFfinal value fees) but listing fees… and only auctions?

If this is eBay’s olive branch to their seller base who lost millions after a 48 hour crash?  Are these people out of touch or what?

The contempt by sellers for eBay has reaching unbelieveable heights and this latest offering is just proof how out of touch they are... Everything this company does, backfires.  And this is no exception.

What happened to free listing days? Does EBay not believe in these anymore? That would mean more to sellers right now than 50% off, IMO.

I'm confused about this promotion and I hope someone can help me. When I schedule a listing aren't I immediately charged for that listing? So if I scheduled a 3 day or 5 day auction based on the original 3 day promotion which ebay later cancelled how do I get a refund for this? Or does ebay give me a 1 day credit now cause its the poromotion is going on again? Hope that makes sense, sorry I'm so daft here.
