On Tap Wednesday: eBay Town Hall, Q3 Results and Analyst Call

By: Ina Steiner

It's a big day for eBay tomorrow, with the release of third-quarter earnings, a conference call with analysts, and a Town Hall meeting with users.

eBay is scheduled to release earnings on October 21, 2009, which it generally does after market close (4 pm Eastern), and its Q3 2009 earnings call with analysts is scheduled for 5 pm Eastern (link). Note that Amazon.com's call with analysts is scheduled for October 22, 2009 at 5 pm Eastern (link), and Overstock.com has not yet announced when it will release third-quarter earnings.

According to the eBay Town Hall page on WSradio, which broadcasts the audio stream of the events, the next live town hall is scheduled for October 21 from 6:30 to 8:00 pm Eastern.

eBay takes call in questions during the event, or you can email your questions to townhall@ebay.com.

Analysts will likely want to know more about Skype's sale and legal battles, PayPal and Bill Me Later, and of course what kinds of results eBay is seeing on the marketplace after recently rolling out changes to the PowerSeller program and to search. Seller questions will likely focus on the recent changes as well, including the Top Rated  Seller program, traffic to the site, and lots more! Got questions? Post them below.

UPDATE 10/21/09: Here's the announcement from eBay about today's Town Hall Meeting posted today at 12:30 pm Eastern. (Not a lot of notice!)

Call 1-888-327-0061 and ask your question on the air or email your question or comment to townhall@ebay.com. eBay will be taking questions on all topics related to the Fall 2009 Seller Release.

Can you ask: Expressed as a portion of the GMV off all goods listed on Ebay, how can you consider only 2% sales growth over this same period 2008 as success, given that the site now has been flooded with 4 times as many items? In other words, what was Ebay's Sell Thru rate in 2008 compared to 2009? Ebay Sellers have seen their sell thru rate fall from 50-90% down to 8 to 10% any comment? Of course, that call will never get thru the lieworld screeners.

I'd like to know if the listing counts matter to analysts or in the filings. Is that important anymore. Doesn't it lead to conversions etc?

I used to think GMV was the total gross merchandise available for sale, but I think I'm wrong?

No that is the question. In relation to the full amount of all goods listed on Ebay, what percentage are actually sold, as compared to same quarter 2008 or 2007? Because there are lots more Chinese junk items available on Ebay, but no one is buying them. What is Ebay's average Sell Thru rate compared to 2008? What is the conversion rate in other words? Sellers have stated their conversion has DROPPED DRASTICALLY in 2009. Sellers that were averaging 50% STR now sell 8-10% Why? Have the actual prices for items sold on Ebay raised or lowered in the past year, IE: If widget A sells for 2.99 today including all fees, what was it's selling price in same quarter 2008, higher or lower? Do you feel, all things considered, a seller is receiving good value for their money & qualified traffic? Do you feel Ebay's value proposition is a fair one, considering the number of free tio list sites that are getting better page placement then Ebay? What is Ebay doing to get products back in Google feed? What Is Ebay doing to bring back customers & page views? What is Ebay doing to improve their own customer service for their sellers? When will Ebay fairly roll out the TSR ratings as offered & put ALL deserving sellers in the program? Why does Ebay remove negatives from Diamond Sellers?

Ho-hum.

Another day of ebay concealing the truth and ho analysts pretending they heard the truth.

EBAY LIES. ALWAYS HAS, ALWAYS WILL.

Well Ebay started the Top Rated Seller roll out on October 1, 2009, Q4 so the real results will not be there until January 20 earnings report.

Question...
Why wait till Q4 to roll out the TRS when it was ready in August 2009?

Because they didn't want a seller exodus so they waited until q4.

Another question: Why is Ebay so against auctions, which was the only unique thing Ebay had to offer? Why would you want to destroy something that creates excitement & drew world record prices before John Donaho tried to destroy them? Why did Ebay callously try to destroy vintage categories thru this foolish move & do you regret it now?

Here’s some questions.

Why he never meets the Sellers at an open event, instead of in small groups of a select few. There is suppose to be an eBay Live in 2010 will he be attending that?

Griff keep referring to the “Industry Standards” as a way all sellers should model their businesses. That seems ambiguous. There is a wide variety of products and different types of sellers; large retailers and the mom and pop sellers, each of these has its own distinct advantages.  Can Industry Standards that applies to billion-dollar multinational conglomerates like Wal-Mart and Sears be applied to all sellers without harming the small seller who cannot absorb a loss of sale or product like the large retailer?

Has he met with any long time sole proprietorship or smaller family-run businesses that sell on eBay?

Why there are no direct phone numbers to customer service, for all customers, to deal with problems, many companies with a large customer base, for example, the phone companies have ''live people'' to talk to.

Which one of his changes to eBay is least effective or possibly detrimental? Would he consider undoing any of his many changes?

I just received confirmation that my sell order on eBay has been filled 9:44am.

I'm happy not to own it going into their earnings report.

Pity the poor fool that buys eBay stock going forward from this price 25.60

When making policies for shipping and payments, does eBay look at how banking and shipping companies work on a global scale or just the USA?
Many of these policy changes over the last 2 years have really hurt Canadian sellers - in fact, you put me out of business altogether...

I don't understand stocks. It's all a scam. How else could a company like Feebay with declining sales, failed policies & so much hatred go up in price while Amazon's stock price took a hit last quarter after announcing they were kicking Ebay's behind? It's all a fraud & shell game. Ebay buys analysts to tout the company just like a shill at the race track. If anyone is buying Ebay after this quarter's continuing failure announcement, they need their heads examined.

It's almost 6 PM EST and no one is home. It's a sad day for Ebay. Cash carrying collectors and antique dealers who love to trade in gold, silver, used goods, flea markets, and the "rare and unusual granny's attic finds" are still out there doing business!! Just not on Ebay!

Dear Pierre,

If you got any advice from Ted Turner, let's just hope it was to give John Donahoe the BIG BOOT in the ASS, as soon as possible, and Lori Norrington, the other BIG BOOT.

Every time I hear Griff I feel the vomit back up into my mouth.

What nauseating pap! ''Yeth, we gave cr*ppy servith and we hear what you are thaying!'' SO WHEN do they do SOMETHING?

I was greatly amused by the lady crying on and on and on about how she didn't get her TRS Dog Show Ribbon. Go over the calls and see how many callers were members of Griff's ''radio'' posse and how many of THEM were complaining.

But the part that totally slays me are the sellers who admit they provide awful service (send the wrong color, don't have item, etc) and still want the buyer's feedback negated!

eBay, any buyer with a half ounce of brain will look on Google and find the same item cheaper somewhere beside eBay. eBay PLEASE NOTE the word ''FIND'' because that doesn't happen with your useless ''best match.''

Where's the Flat Rate Priority Mail box postage for eBay/PayPal? How many YEARS has that been in the works now??? Oh, but they have plenty of time to design bras and wine and dine little hand picked groups of hard core kool-aid drinkers.

My ears still ring from that patronizing co-host, Lee Whatever, fluffing the fraudsters. Give it a break lady, your check IS in the mail.

Somebody ought to ask about the Rolling Blackouts, but that wouldn't be cheer leading.
