eBay Polls Sellers on Possible Fulfillment Service

By: Ina Steiner

eBay is reportedly conducting a survey to measure sellers' interest in a fulfillment service. Presumably the model would be similar to Amazon.com's FBA (Fulfillment By Amazon) service in which sellers store their inventory at Amazon's warehouses, email their orders to Amazon, which picks, packs and ships the orders directly to customers. Most fulfillment services charge a fee for storing product and for the actual product fulfillment.

A seller posting on the eBay discussion boards pasted information from the survey, including the following:
eBay is exploring the potential idea of offering fulfillment services to its sellers. This service will allow sellers to send all or part of their eBay inventory directly to fulfillment centers associated with eBay where their products will be organized, stored, packaged and shipped directly to the buyer upon sale. Each interested seller can easily sign up and set up the service, and then transition their inventory to the new warehouse.

Amazon's fulfillment service offers a range of plans and lets sellers fulfill from any channel. It built up experience and warehousing capabilities over the past 10 years, as it fulfills its own orders to customers.

If eBay decided to get into the fulfillment business, would it partner with (or acquire) an existing fulfillment service? How about a partnership with a company such as UPS? Should it get into the fulfillment business?

That just confirmes to me that eBay has totally forgot who made them,...where they came from...the core that made eBay.  No little wonder that the alt. sites such as Bonanzle is doing so good!

I can just see how this would work

1)Seller places order with ebay fulfillment

2)  Ebay fulfillment takes a couple days to ship or somehow screws up the order

3)  Buyer leaves seller low dsr's

4)  After a few of these, seller loses raises search standing, or is suspended

5)  Seller complains to ebay and is told they should re-examine what they are doing to satisfy the customer, and they will not remove feedback (though they will punish sellers for it) even though it was there fault.

Ebay should focus on getting their own house under control before trying stuff like this

They can't even respond appropriately to emails, or submit a search or my ebay interface that works. I'm going to trust them to hold on to, and store my valuable jewelry, then trust them to wrap it and pack it and send it to the right place??

They just scaled down their employees, they can't get ANYTHING done right.

Let them just get their regular auction  listing service right, and treat the sellers equally. What kind of imbeciles run that place??????????

Please tell me this is a joke? …the consequences of this being controlled by eBay would be horrific.

EVERYTHING eBay does is a screw-up

I think it is a great idea seeing how it works great for Amazon.  However this is eBay we are talking about and eBay is extremely bad at implementation.  I can't even imagine the horrors this would unleash.

Its now perfectly clear.  The 'prototypes' of eBay packaging, the destruction of the small sellers, the introduction of Diamond Power Sellers (Buy.com types), and John Donahoe's fixation on making eBay like his competetor, Amazon.

If its not obvious to the sellers yet, get prepared for a shock.  EBay and its new 'data center' and this latest ''Possible Fulfillment Service'' are setting up to compete with its sellers.  If I read all the signs right here, eBay thinks it can go verticle and BECOME THE SELLER, instead of the venue.

So, all those chats you've had with your account manager at eBay were only designed to pry proprietary information from you, so they can study your business model, and swallow you up, as your newest, and largest competetor!

If you're an eBay seller of any size, this should absolutely make your skin crawl, and have you shaking in panic, while they slowly euthanize you into surrendering your small selling empires to the evil one; John Donahoe.

The new eBay doesn't need sellers, because it will be stocking everything it thinks the sellers have been selling, and will destroy all of its power sellers in one move.  Check mate Power Sellers, you're done, and you let this horrific event happen right under your noses.

What's even more disturbing is that the blind greed that created this whole plan will only serve to swallow up eBay, and render it benign.  Ecommerce is about people trading with other people, corporate free.  RIP EBay.

No way! Ebay needs to fix its Ebay business. What Ebay does have is hundreds of thousands of A+ SKUs. They have all the data they could possibly want or need to smash anyone, anyhow and at any time. They are sitting on a data goldmine!

eBay can not even administer their own programs correctly and efficiently as evidenced by the many glitches experienced on the site on an almost daily basis.

Sellers would never trust eBay with their inventory.

First, added costs to ship to eBay's warehouse will drive up prices.

Second, eBay will charge higher fees which are already out of control.

Third, sellers DSR ratings would be at risk when eBay fails to fulfill orders correctly or in a timely manner.

Mr Donahoe needs to stop trying to become Amazon. That business exists and Amazon does it much better than eBay could ever hope.

If Mr Donahoe had not spent the past year alienating buyers and sellers with horrible policy, system changes, and pi$$ poor implementation and execution, the holiday season would have been much more profitable and successful for sellers and eBay.

Now that I've quick laughing hysterically, I guess I'm not surprised.
The policies they rolled out in the last year were just as insane.

I can just see it now, ebay will be shipping out bootlegs, counterfeits, fakes, forgeries  by the truckload and their media spin will refer to it as irrelevant "noise".

OMGosh. you have got to be kidding.
I guess if you look at it you can see the drop ship people or people selling computer or dvds or something might want their stuff sh directly to e for fullfillment then the seller doesnt have to deal with it... yeah right. If they cant even answer an email in less than 2 days and the standard answer is still ...clear your cache...
JD better wake up and realize he has a tiger by the tail.
Hey, wasnt ebay that told us we werent employees, just independent contractors, yada yada yada....
Im just so shocked I cant think of anything intelligent to say.

The Ho is in La La Land!  Where do these stupid ideas come from?  Is this just a ploy to completely take over as The Seller on Ebay, under the guise of ''Fulfillment''

The only one stupid enough to trust Ebay employees with their merchandise would be JD himself.

Since most of the stuff sold on Ebay comes out of China now, maybe that is where the ''Fulfillment'' warehouses will be located.

I tell you, JD is completely losing it!

Amazon had years of experience as a retailer before they ever opened up their platform to 3rd Party sellers. eBay has never sold anything before themselves. I guess when a company is short on innovation, they start stealing the ideas from successful companies.

Why not use all of those eBay consignment stores that are gasping for air as drop-off centers. They already have the experience selling, dealing with customers, billing, shipping. It would throw them a lifeline.

Wait - this is eBay...

Actually, I think it's a great idea. eBay I think finally realizes that many of their sellers are sub-par, and the only way to do things right is to do it yourself.

So basically, it will be top sellers, like me, and eBay reaping the profits. Underachievers need not apply. That's what Bonanzle is for.
