AuctionBytes Glitch Report for August 18, 2008

BRAND NEW GLITCH: Some sellers are getting email messages with a strange header titled, "eBay Tax Status Request." This looks like a glitch, but why would eBay have that particular header in their system at all? Are they going to start requesting sellers provide them with Tax ID numbers?

It may simply have to do with the new law passed that requires PayPal to report to the IRS the total payment volume received by high-volume PayPal customers in the U.S. and going into effect in 2012. But I'm sure the conspiracy theorists among us could come up with other scenarios.

The message appears to be sent to certain people only when a trading partner requests their contact information. According to reports, it doesn't seem to matter if it's the person requesting the info or the person about whom the info is requested, rather, it goes to certain people but not others.

ONGOING: A reader wrote yesterday, "I recently noticed while preparing labels to print on PayPal that each one was automatically being billed for insurance for all customers who did not request insurance,...A supervisor acknowledged that there is an intermittent problem where some accounts (they have no idea why) are being charged a $1.70 insurance fee for each transaction. I was told to use the USPS Click N Ship or take the items to the post office until they can get this worked out. (Two days later it is still not fixed)."

This is an ongoing problem with PayPal labels - see this thread on the PayPal board on the eBay discussion forum.

UNCONFIRMED: Here's a problem that I've received only one report about thusfar and could not find reported on the boards (I've paraphrased the reader's email): "Over the weekend I broke down transaction by transaction, and shows a variation on every purchase. If our net was $50, our balance should have changed by that much, but isn't happening. So it is not a reporting issue, but an actual money issue. I was able to confirm this with a paypal customer service rep - She said it is not a report issue, but a "money" issue. She said they are working on it."

If widespread, one would think it would be all over the boards. But it is a good reminder to go over your invoices very carefully.

INTERMITTENT? Someone wrote me that eBay lost their Blocked Bidder list, which is now apparently unrecoverable. I can't find evidence that it is widespread this time (this glitch has happened before), but it is a good reminder to back up your Blocked Bidder lists! (So why doesn't eBay make available backups of the lists?)

I have questions in to eBay and PayPal about these glitches and have not yet heard back, will update if information is provided.

re: the tax status message...  are these sellers sure that the email is from ebay.  it wouldn't surprise me if account hijackers tried that to get passwords.

re: paypal variations.  a variation on what?  the fees they are taking for the same amount of purchase?  i'm not clear on what the "variation" is.

I received the eBay Tax Status Request more than once when requesting contact info.  I tested it as both a seller and a buyer. I checked the full header of the emails, and they are --beyond the shadow of a doubt-- from eBay.

I haven't said it once I've said it again. Ebay needs to quite changing things around and get some capable programs and fix some of the glitches that have been around for months. Seems like everytime they add something it creates a glitch that never gets fixed. GlitchBay losing blocked bidders lists has been going on for months. READ THE BOARDS

I have been getting a "glitch" whenever I go to pay for something with Paypal where a dialog box comes up asking which of our paypal accounts do we want to change the password for!  Closing the box allows me to continue.

As a law-abiding taxpayer, I'm personally fed up with all these eBay sellers getting away without paying taxes on their ill-gotten gains while driving their fancy cars and living in their opulant mansions.  For years, they have gamed the system.  However, I think it's a good move for eBay to provide the names of these people to the IRS so that they can investigate them time and resources permitting.  If they dont report anything at all, it gives an instant GOTCHA against the perpetrators of income tax evasion.  If they are merely cheating on the figures like saying their income was $200,000 instead of $2,000,000, then I guess we'll have to wait until the data can be compiled in the eBay powerscum database so that it can be forwarded to the IRS for investigation of tax evasion, and if necessary also to the FBI, since these are interstate crimes.  It will be refreshing to see these cheats and scoundrels get burned at the stake.

GLITCH? eBay is full of glitches guised as policy. Today is August 19 and at least today they have restored my feedback to 100% (as neutrals no longer count on the feedback score). Too bad I still have a bad taste in my mouth. I somehow still have a Platinum Powerseller status, but I don't want to play the eBay feedback game anymore. For now I'm content shopping eBay. Lots of disgruntled sellers are dumping their wares so it's a good time to shop.

When ever I go to print a PayPal shipping label for something I sold on eBay, it has a section that shows how much S&H the buyer paid. For I don't know how long, that section has been automatically adding INSURANCE, even though when you look at the actual paypal payment, the buyer never purchased insurance. I don't select insurance on the list, so it doesn't charge me for it, but it is VERY annoying.

I just hope ebay tries protecting their elite groups, so the IRS will take a long hard look into ebay incs finances.  Now, THAT would DEFINITELY be worth their time!

@ mindelec

The ''eBay Tax Status Request'' emails are 100% confirmed to have come from eBay and eBay has acknowledged they are yet another ''Glitch''.

Why they have the email with ''eBay Tax Status Request'' was not explained by the eBay rep we asked, only that it was a ''Glitch''.

@ Herbert Monroe

I ''WISH'' I was one of those eBay sellers you were talking about, (at least the $2,000,000 in sales part).  Do they really exist?  And who are they?  Do you know any of them personally?  How do you know what they report on their taxes?  Please present some facts to back up your claims.

Thanks,

''Glitch'' Victim

This is happening to me as well.  My CPA was working on my May and June financial reports and gave up.  She told me to contact Paypal and insist they give me these reports in a manner that can be reconciled as she cannot reconcile them the way they are.  Something is majorily wrong with Paypal's math.  The Excel download balances do NOT  match with what is showing on the Paypal site and do not add up properly.  It is a mess.  I put a ticket in with Paypal almost a week ago and have received no response.

I had an interesting glitch with PP today.  A repeat customer of mine purchased multiple lots last night and tried to pay with the invoice I sent her combining her shipping costs.  I actually combined two like lots and charged her just the shipping on one lot so in affect one lot was getting free shipping.  Pay Pal would not allow her to pay because shipping the invoice was not charging for the second lot.  I had to make her out an invoice for "goods" and send it from my Pay Pal account so she could pay me.  First they condemn us for charging shipping and then when we cut the customer a break they trump us and insist on charging it and more.  I don't get it!

@herbert Monroe

Show me some of these sellers you allege are ''driving their fancy cars and living in opulant mansions''

I think you'll find that most sellers are hanging on by their fingernails with policy changes and ''glitches'' caused by our ''service'' provider ebay. Please show us your facts other than  a general rant against supposed tax cheats.

How about the private seller who has purchased something with income that has already been taxed and then later sold it?

You propose taxing the item again by counting this as income for tax purposes? Rather than a liquidation of a no longer needed item (like a computer that was replaced with a newer one) Or a mother who re-sells her childrens clothes as they outgrow them?

Please....

My CPA ensures that I am in full compliance with current tax code.

This is really a topic un-related to this one about the glitches.

Perhaps you could release your financials so we can see what you are talking about?

The Paypal excel download bug was confirmed to me today by a Paypal rep.  According to him it was fixed on the 18th, but even though I had a ticket in, nobody from Paypal bothered to let me know.  You should be able to redownload the May and June  logs now and they should be correct and actually add up properly.
